Animal Whisperer: Take Back My Life and Love Chapter 154: The High-efficiency Boss
Nancy lowered her head and ate obediently, nibbling at her nutritious meal like a little hamster. She looked exceptionally well-behaved.
At that moment, Barry walked into the dining hall. He had showered and changed into a crisp black suit, looking meticulously groomed.
He didn't make a sound, simply stopping a short distance away to watch Nancy eat her breakfast with such focus.
Finally, Jorgan reminded him in a low voice, "Sir, it's about time. We should head to the airport."
Hearing this, Nancy looked up curiously. "Where are you going?"
Barry's gaze swept over the corner of her mouth, which was stained with a bit of sauce. "Murica," he said simply.
With that, he turned sharply and walked out with Jorgan.
The two moved in tandem, their steps steady and swift. The well-tailored suit accentuated the line of Barry's broad shoulders and narrow waist as he walked away, radiating an undeniable aura of cold authority—the very image of a powerful CEO.
Nancy watched their departing figures and stuffed the last bite of egg into her mouth, unable to keep herself from clicking her tongue in admiration. "As expected of a high-energy person..."
"He'd already done so much so early in the morning!"
After breakfast, Director Nancy officially began her workday.
Lately, she and the other two veterinarians on-site had been working around the clock, treating and diagnosing the animals in the park.
Nancy had gritted her teeth and raised the salaries of her two key players by 50%, terrified that they might be poached by other zoos.
Although the zoo was constantly recruiting for more vets, something strange was happening. Candidates would seem interested during the interviews, but they would always suddenly change their minds and decline the position at the last minute.
Nancy stepped into the zoo's infirmary. While the place still felt a bit dated, it had finally been outfitted with a batch of brand-new basic equipment.
The 100,000 reward from solving the headless female corpse case, combined with the 200,000 from assisting the swim team, had almost entirely been poured into these machines.
However, this only covered the most basic upgrades.
The more precise, advanced instruments cost hundreds of thousands or even millions each, a reality that made Nancy's heart tremble. At the thought of it, she tightened her small fists, a fire igniting in her eyes. She had to work even harder to make money!
She pushed open the infirmary door, and the scent of disinfectant hit her instantly.
On a medical bed, a reddish-orange red panda was curled up weakly, its iconic fluffy tail drooping listlessly over the edge.
The little guy was clearly in abdominal distress, his body trembling slightly as he let out faint, pained whimpers. The damp fur around its dark eye circles made it look as though it were silently weeping. It was a pitiful sight.
Autumn Sand, the red panda veterinary assistant, was softly comforting the animal while busy with pre-op preparations, her brow furrowed deeply.
Nancy scanned the room and realized Autumn was alone. Her heart sank instantly. "Why are you the only one here? Where's Luna?"
Autumn looked troubled, though her hands didn't stop moving. "I've been calling her since this morning, but she hasn't picked up once... she isn't replying to messages either."
She looked up, her voice frantic. "What do we do? We can't delay surgery for an intussusception. It has to be done within these two days, or else..."
An intussusception surgery required opening the abdomen to manually reposition the intestines and determining if the tissue was still viable or needed resection. It was a major surgery requiring high levels of anesthesia and surgical skill, something that absolutely necessitated teamwork.
With Luna suddenly absent, the surgery couldn't proceed at all!
Seeing the red panda curled in pain, Nancy's heart twisted with pity. She gently stroked the little one's trembling back and then pulled out her phone without hesitation to place a video call to Luna.
If Luna didn't show, Nancy still had the contact info for Gabriel's staff; she would just have to ask them for help finding someone.
Unexpectedly, the call actually went through this time.
As the screen lit up, Nancy froze.
The background behind Luna looked incredibly familiar. The cream-white walls and the layout of the cabinets were clearly the signature office style of Summers Corp Veterinary Hospital!
What made her heart sink further was that Luna was wearing a brand-new white lab coat. Her hair was perfectly styled, her face was glowing with a smile, and her eyes held an unmasked look of provocation.
"Oh, Miss Nancy," Luna took the lead, her tone light and smug. "It's good that you called; it saves me the trouble of notifying you specifically."
She intentionally adjusted the camera to show more of her surroundings. "As you can see, I've been hired by the nation's top facility, Summers Corp Veterinary Hospital, for a significant sum. So—"
She drew out the last word, her smile becoming even more piercing. "I'm officially resigning right here and now."
