Animal Whisperer: Take Back My Life and Love Chapter 155: The Hand Behind The Curtain
"I'm done staying at that pathetic little trash of yours. No equipment, no future—I'm out."
After Luna finished her smug declaration, a cold smile curved Nancy's lips.
"Dr. Luna, you are certainly free to resign. However, according to your labor contract, you are required to give thirty days' written notice."
"Your current behavior constitutes an illegal termination of contract."
She paused, her gaze piercing through the screen. "Furthermore, I recall our contract contains very explicit confidentiality clauses and non-compete agreements."
Nancy hadn't been foolish enough to just hand out raises to the zoo's veterinarians for nothing. She had required both vets to sign a revised supplemental contract specifically to prevent a situation like this.
Nancy spoke each word with solemn gravity: "You haven't just abandoned your post; you've leaked the medical conditions and surgical schedules of our animals to a competitor, Summers Corp..."
"Do you really think Summers Corp is willing to pay a breach-of-contract fee and damages that could easily reach hundreds of thousands just for you?"
On the other end of the video call, the smile on Luna's face froze. The color drained from her skin bit by bit.
Nancy continued calmly, "Now, I'm giving you two choices. One: return immediately and perform this surgery, after which we will handle your resignation through the proper channels. Two: stay at Summers Corp Veterinary Hospital and wait for the lawsuit."
Luna's eyes darted away instinctively, but she forced herself to maintain her stance. "When Summers Corp scouted me, they promised to handle all subsequent compensation! It's none of your business!"
Nancy simply arched an eyebrow. "Oh? Is that so?"
That breezy counter-question sent a wave of panic through Luna.
Just then, Luna's phone vibrated—she seemed to have received a new message.
Nancy clearly observed Luna's eyes light up as she glimpsed the text. Her previous panic vanished instantly; her spine straightened, and she even tilted her chin up a notch.
"Nancy, let me tell you," Luna's tone was even more arrogant than before, filled with a nauseating sense of self-satisfaction.
"Gold shines wherever it's placed! Summers Corp values my talent and ability. I am worth whatever price they have to pay!"
She sneered, as if she had just heard the funniest joke in the world. "Go ahead and sue! Summers Corp's legal department isn't just for show. They'll naturally cover for me."
Finally, she added with pure malice, "Instead of wasting time threatening me, you'd better start praying to whatever gods you believe in. Figure out how to save that dying red panda of yours!"
With that, she didn't give Nancy another chance to speak and slammed the "end call" button.
Looking at the blank screen, Nancy's lips curled into a cold arc.
She had spent enough time at Summers Corp Veterinary Hospital to know exactly what kind of person they would cover a breach-of-contract fee for. You either had to be a titan of the industry or hold valuable patents.
Given Luna's skill level, if she truly had that kind of talent, she would have been poached with a high salary long ago. Why wait until this critical moment?
This was clearly a direct strike aimed at her.
Nancy understood almost instantly who was pulling the strings from behind the scenes.
It was either Ginnie, who had always despised her; Jack, who was nursing a bruised ego after repeated failures; or, more likely, the entire Summers family working together to trip her up.
"Miss Nancy... what... what do we do now?"
Beside her, Autumn's voice was thick with tears, her eyes red.
Caring for animals in a zoo is no game, especially rare species. This red panda was a second-class protected species in the country. If something happened to it because of a delay in treatment, the consequences would be catastrophic.
At best, it would mean a severe warning and a massive fine from the Grassland Bureau. At worst, if someone with an agenda stirred up trouble online, the public outcry could lead to the suspension or even revocation of their breeding and exhibition permits.
Loren Zoo's reputation had only just begun to recover; it truly couldn't afford another blow like this.
Autumn let out a helpless sob. "I was afraid of an accident, so I... I contacted every vet friend I know first thing this morning."
"But they all turned me down. Every one of them said they couldn't come on such short notice..."
Nancy turned to the girl in surprise.
Autumn had worked at the zoo for a year and a half as Luna's assistant. She was usually quiet, always following behind and never saying much. She hadn't expected that, in this moment of crisis, Autumn would take the initiative to seek outside help.
Nancy's heart softened with a wave of relief.
Thankfully, not everyone was so irresponsible or cold-hearted. This hardworking, dedicated employee was someone worth grooming.
During the previous "Cuties Petting Zoo Great Escape" incident, Nancy had saved the contact information of two staff members.
