Animal Whisperer: Take Back My Life and Love Chapter 168: The Night Patrol Team
Master Crow immediately bristled. "What?! You want me to bring the whole family along?"
"That is going to cost extra!"
Nancy spoke persuasively. "Think about it. Does having an extra helper not increase the chances of catching the criminal?"
"The medals can be accumulated for both of you. Little Fatty is a simpleton; he only cares about eating and doesn't understand a thing. When the time comes, won't his share of the reward end up belonging to you?"
Master Crow went silent for three seconds. Then, the sound of flapping wings came through the phone.
"I'll be there! Ten minutes! I guarantee I'll drag this fat brat over!"
While waiting for Master Crow to arrive, the two went to buy some sympathy gifts for her.
Nancy made a point of buying some lavender essential oils to soothe the nerves. Autumn, on the other hand, chose a few types of mild "goodnight" tea and some soft, sweet desserts.
As the night grew darker, Nancy and Autumn carried large bags of snacks and boba tea, flagging down a taxi by the roadside.
Before the car had even come to a full stop, a flapping sound echoed from above, accompanied by a stream of grumbling bird cries.
The two looked up to see Master Crow flapping his wings with all his might, his claws tightly clutching a round, half-asleep little fat bat as he huffed and puffed his way down to land on the roof of the taxi.
Autumn watched, dumbfounded, pointing at the roof. "Miss Nancy... is this the bodyguard team we shook down?!"
Nancy pulled open the car door with an air of complete normalcy. "That's right ~ A professional team, available on call!"
"And look, they can fly to your senior's house on their own. No taking up seats, no carpooling—look at all the funds we're saving!"
As the taxi slowly started moving, Master Crow immediately pecked the fat bat on the head with his beak. "Wake up! The weight-loss training has begun!"
"Take flight, take flight ~ and remember the route while you're at it."
The little fat bat whimpered from the pecking and reluctantly opened its beady eyes, letting out a massive yawn. "Left after the traffic light... zzz..."
Before it could finish its sentence, its head drooped again as it flopped back onto the roof, seemingly about to fall asleep once more.
Master Crow flew into a rage. He grabbed the scruff of the bat's neck with his beak and shook it violently in the air. "Caw! You lazy bones! You don't sleep during the day, yet you spend all night sunbathing! Fly! Wake up!"
The fat bat was shaken until it was dizzy, its four tiny claws flapping wildly. "Wah! Boss, stop shaking! I'm gonna puke, I'm gonna puke!"
"I'll fly seriously!"
And so, a strange sight appeared in the city's night sky:
A taxi drove steadily toward the old town. Just above the car roof, a crow aggressively held a fat bat by the scruff of its neck, pecking its head relentlessly as it flew, as if whipping a good-for-nothing child into shape.
The fat bat's eyes were brimming with tears from the pecking, yet it still had to struggle to keep its eyes open to recognize the way. "Front... right turn at the intersection ahead..."
"Wah! Boss, stop pecking! I'm really not asleep this time!"
Master Crow's shouting pierced through the night. "Caw! Only a ghost would believe you! Fly faster!"
"If you dawdle any longer, I'm docking half a mealworm from your midnight snack!"
The taxi driver noticed nothing of the commotion on his roof, simply humming along as he followed the navigation.
In the back seat, Nancy and Autumn shared a knowing look. The former's shoulders were shaking from suppressed laughter, while the latter listened to the bird cries above and sighed. "This bodyguard team... is indeed very cost-effective."
The taxi slowed to a halt in front of a slightly cluttered cluster of old residential buildings in the old district.
The buildings were packed tightly together with mottled exterior walls and narrow, dimly lit corridors. Clotheslines hung crisscrossed between the windowsills.
Nancy paused for a moment as she stepped out of the car, her gaze becoming a bit distant. She was all too familiar with such a scene.
When she had been driven out of the house by the Summers family, she had once dragged her luggage into similar old buildings to survive.
Perhaps the neighbors here were closer, but the dilapidated facilities and the complex, transient population also meant countless hidden dangers.
Autumn explained softly, "Not long after she resigned, something suddenly happened at home and her finances became tight... she can only rent here for the time being. Besides, the landlord treats her well, doting on her like a real granddaughter."
Nancy nodded, her voice very soft. "I understand."
They climbed the narrow stairs to the third floor and knocked on an old iron door covered in small advertisements.
The door was opened by a frail girl with a pale face and heavy dark circles under her eyes.
When she saw Autumn, a faint glimmer of light finally appeared in her dull eyes, but the moment her gaze landed on Nancy, that light froze instantly.
Elsa stood frozen in place, her fingers tightening around the door frame.
Nancy tilted her head slightly, watching her and asking softly, "Have we... met somewhere before?"
Elsa seemed as if she had been stung by something. She shook her head abruptly, her voice sounding a bit dry. "No... no... you must have the wrong person."
Nancy didn't press further, only offering a shallow smile.
But she could tell that she was hiding something.
They had definitely met.
