Animal Whisperer: Take Back My Life and Love Chapter 190: High Tech Versus Handwork
"That's right!" A student excitedly held up a phone. "The head of the publicity department posted it on her Moments. Now the activity promotion is everywhere~"
"Those little animals look so incredibly cute!"
"I heard they even help the police solve cases? In that case, we definitely have to go and see them!"
Nancy hadn't expected those three girls from yesterday to promote her so vigorously. She smiled and said, "Everyone is welcome. I'll be sure to prepare some surprises for you all when the time comes."
The takeout thief, surrounded and subjected to a public execution by so many stares, didn't dare move an inch. His face was flushed red, and he stood there shivering with his head hung low.
Just then, Jack walked out of the cafeteria with his assistant. Hearing the commotion near the student dormitories and seeing students shouting "Caught him! We caught him!", his heart sank. He unconsciously clenched his fists.
Did Nancy catch the murderer all by herself?!
He hurried over, only to hear the students enthusiastically praising Nancy, their voices full of admiration and gratitude. Jack's face stiffened as he forced down the turbulent emotions in his heart.
Then, he saw Nancy approaching, escorting a boy in glasses. She walked straight up to Neil, the officer beside Jack, and spoke clearly: "Perfect timing. I caught a serial takeout thief."
"According to student feedback, he has struck multiple times, and the total amount has exceeded three thousand, which meets the criteria for a criminal case." She handed the person over efficiently, her tone calm. "He's yours to process now."
Hearing that it was only a food thief, a flash of disappointment crossed Neil's eyes, but under the watchful gaze of so many students, he nodded and took custody of the suspect.
Jack breathed a sigh of relief. His expression immediately soured, and he turned to Nancy with a harsh scolding: "The Opening Ceremony is the day after tomorrow! As an animal communicator who can understand their language, you didn't use your expertise to fully investigate the murder. Instead, you wasted time catching some petty food thief? You're delaying the investigation!"
His tone grew increasingly severe, filled with blatant accusation. "You need to learn how to prioritize, do you understand!"
Nancy's gaze sharpened, and she shot back without yielding, "In what capacity are you scolding me?"
Jack kept a straight face, acting with an air of moral superiority. "I'm doing this for your own good. Investigating a case requires distinguishing between what's urgent and what's not. Scattering your energy like this will only delay the real work..."
Nancy cut him off directly, her voice icy. "You aren't my brother. What right do you have to lecture me?"
"My brother is far more capable than you." He's busy tracking down the real killer and doesn't have the spare time to stand here pointing fingers at others."
Just as Jack's face turned livid and he was about to argue back, Captain Neil's clear and excited voice suddenly erupted from the radio on Officer Neil's chest:
"Attention all units! The suspect has been successfully apprehended! Everyone, return to the bureau for assembly immediately!"
Hearing the notification that the suspect had been caught, Neil, who was still holding the food thief, couldn't help but gasp. "So fast?! Didn't we just get the suspect's portrait?" We were still screening her movements based on surveillance!"
He then beamed with joy. "Fantastic! This is truly the power of technology!"
Upon hearing this, a confident smile surfaced on Jack's face. He pushed up his glasses and said, "After Nancy sent the suspect's portrait to the bureau this morning, I immediately had the two technical analysts I brought scan the image into the system. We used it as the initial image for AI facial recognition and cross-database comparison."
His tone carried a hint of smugness. "It seems the system hit a match, and our officers carried out the arrest."
Nancy blinked. "Huh?"
Neil couldn't help but offer praise from the side. "You truly are an expert returned from overseas studies." The moment you step in, you introduce cutting-edge technology and drastically improve investigative efficiency!"
Jack nodded slightly and looked at Nancy, speaking in a condescendingly forgiving tone: "Since we caught the person, your portrait can be considered a contribution. Don't worry, I'll include a mention of your part when I write the report."
He flashed a seemingly generous smile. "I've never been stingy about recognizing the contributions of others."
Nancy still responded with just one sound: "...Huh?"
Jack, seeing her stunned expression, felt the superior smile on his lips deepen. "Do you see? This is what it means to use technology where it counts. That's why we were able to catch the person so quickly while you were here meddling in trifles like catching a food thief."
He added with a contemptuous tone, "If you had spent your time on the right path and carefully questioned the stray cats and dogs near the snack street, you might have had a chance to find the person a step ahead of me."
At this point, the students who were already indignant about the food thief became unhappy upon hearing Jack's words:
"Who even are you? At least our Nancy caught a thief. Some people don't even care when our food gets stolen~"
