Animal Whisperer: Take Back My Life and Love Chapter 366: The High Stakes Mission
"This time, I won't let him get away! I'm going to kill him for what he did to my baby!"
Nancy felt a jolt as the pieces fell together. The lynx only remembered two things about the killer. They had camera gear and they were at the scene.
When Logan showed up the next day at the exact same spot with the same equipment, the mother naturally marked him as her target.
But Nancy noticed a problem. As a military reporter, Logan only worked in high security zones. Those areas had strict rules. Drones and cameras needed special permission because any random footage could leak base locations or secrets.
Nancy looked at Logan. "When were you attacked?"
"Last Tuesday afternoon. And on Monday, did the military send anyone with drones or cameras to that area?"
Logan shook his head. "No. There were no filming jobs scheduled for that day."
Graham immediately checked with his team and confirmed that no authorized personnel had been out there.
"That explains it," Nancy said. "According to the lynx, her kitten was killed by someone with a drone and a camera. She thought Logan was the killer because he showed up later in the same spot with the same gear."
Graham’s face went grim. "So we have a spy trying to steal secrets?"
Logan froze for a second before it hit him. "That makes sense! The kitten probably got in the way of whatever they were doing, so they killed it."
He thought it through. "When the mother came back, the spy was probably stuck between an angry predator and the fear of making enough noise to bring a patrol down on them. They must have panicked and run."
Graham was silent for a moment. "Wait here. I need to talk to my superiors. I have something to discuss with you."
His serious tone made Nancy tense up. The authority coming from a military leader was heavy. It made her want to stand up straight and snap to attention.
While Graham was gone, Nancy spoke softly to the lynx. "You have the wrong man. The one who killed your baby wasn't this reporter. The real killer is a spy. But I promise you, we’ll find them and get justice for your kitten."
The lynx’s ears twitched and the anger in her eyes started to turn into confusion. She lowered her head and let out a soft sound.
"So... I bit the wrong person?"
The lynx hesitated and then did something unexpected. She used her nose to push her untouched meat toward the bars, stopping it right in front of Logan. Then she rolled onto her back, showing her belly and letting out a weak whimper.
"I'm sorry. I was wrong."
Logan let out a laugh, even though he was still pale from losing blood. "It’s fine! That bite actually helped us. A messed up arm is a small price to pay for finding a nest of spies. I’d say we’re even!"
The lynx tilted her head, confused. She couldn't understand why this human wasn't angry. Instead, he was happy and told her she did a good job.
A few minutes later, Graham came back into the room. He moved to a private office before speaking.
"Ms. Nancy," he said, lowering his voice. "We’ve been picking up strange signals and suspected spies were in that area. But they’re smart. We haven't been able to find them."
Now, Nancy’s talk with the lynx proved they existed. Graham looked at the screen with intensity.
"Ms. Nancy, I’m officially inviting you to the Northwest Base. We need your help to hunt these people down!"
Nancy felt a rush of adrenaline. This wasn't just a job. It was the ultimate proof that her skills mattered. Graham saw the look on her face and laid out the terms.
"We’ll cover every cent of your travel and we’re giving you a hundred thousand upfront as a special allowance."
He got even more serious. "If you help us take down this spy ring, you’ll get a two million reward for the information."
"Two million?" Nancy’s heart hammered. Another high paying mission.
"That’s just the start." Graham gave a small smile. "We’ll set up a fund for your research with a budget of at least five million a year, fully covered."
