JAYDEN: I pretty much tuned Rolan out once we were out of the bunker. I knew my brother wanted a piece of him, but I kept him focused on our mate. She has already endured too much. I’m amazed at her fortitude, how she can keep going after everything she has been through; she is still standing. When I heard Mother scream. It turned my blood to ice. I was scared for Chiara. I turned in Chiara’s direction. But it was already too late; mother already had her by the throat. I started moving in Chi’s direction. But before I could take one step, father had put his hand through her back and crushed her heart. I felt her death, her loss through the bond. But if father hadn’t done it, I would have. I got to Chi. She looked like she was going to collapse. I just picked her up and cradled her against me. She just kept apologizing over and over. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry.” “It’s ok, baby girl, you have nothing to be sorry for.” I spoke softly to her. I headed to the pack clinic with her so that the Doc could check her out. But with this new development, my brother and I were going to need to have a serious talk about what we were going to do going forward. I want Chi in the Packhouse with us. But I know that it’s got to be her choice, but she will be safe with us now, being in the pack house.

IESHA: I was grateful that we had gotten Chi back. I wrapped my arms around her. I just held on to her. Then, out of nowhere, the Luna was screaming and rushing right for us. I froze. It was like she was using her Luna command without giving a command. Then she had her hands around Chi’s neck, choking her. and I couldn’t move. It’s as if my feet grew roots and I was stuck. I saw everything happening like it was happening in slow motion. And I saw my life with my best friend flash before my eyes. I know they say that happens to the person whose life is on the line, but I saw ours flash before mine. Then Rolan’s screaming broke through the fog. And I saw the Luna on the ground with the Alpha holding her. Then it hit me, the loss of the Luna through the bond. It hurt, but not as much as if I had lost my best friend. I feel sorry for the Alpha, that had to be excruciating for him. I took a step closer to him. “I am so sorry.” I offered him condolences. It’s the best I could do. He nodded in recognition of my words. Then the rest of the younger-ranked unit and I followed the twins.

DR. NATHAN: I felt the loss of the Luna through the bond. I tried to reach out to link the Alpha. But he was too distraught to let me in. Shortly after I tried to link the Alpha, the twins came in carrying Chiara. She was mumbling softly under her breath. “What happened?” I asked as the staff got a stretcher for her. “She was kidnapped two days ago. We don’t know her actual condition.” Jayden said. As he put her down on the stretcher. “What happened with your mother?” I asked. “She was going to kill Chiara, and Father stopped her. He had to kill her to do it.” Caiden deadpanned his answer. “I am sorry for your loss.” I told the boys. “Thank you, doc, but save that for father. Please check Chiara, we need to know if she went backwards in her recovery. And as for mother, if father hadn’t done it. My brother or I would have.” Jayden said. And he deadpanned his comment to me as well. I went into doctor mode then. I took Chiara’s vitals; she was holding steady with all her numbers, but the silver did a number on her wrist, and she had another concussion. I also took a blood sample. I wanted to make sure that she didn’t have silver poisoning because of her weakened state. I was pretty sure she didn’t, but I wanted to be absolutely positive about it. “Tell me the details you do have.” I said to them. “We were at the BBQ on Friday after graduation, then the fire was started, and we headed in the direction of the orphanage. She was scared that the building was on fire. When we got there, we realized that the fire was contained in the pit, but it was just high. I noticed that Chi wasn’t with me. She was right behind me when we left the BBQ. But when we reached the orphanage, she wasn’t. I called out to her. There was no answer, so I called her phone. I heard it ringing, and I followed the sound and found her phone about halfway between the BBQ and the orphanage.” Iesha told the story. I deduced from what she said that Chiara must have been hit from behind, and that’s how she ended up with the concussion. “Her vitals are all in the normal range, and she has a concussion. I took blood to run tests for silver poisoning. I don’t believe she has it, but I want to be absolutely sure she doesn’t.” I tell them. “Will we be able to take her home, Doc?” Caiden asked. “I want to keep her overnight to monitor her.” I told them. “Then put her in the Luna’s room, because we are staying with her.” Jayden says. His tone brooked no argument. I did do an IV. I wanted to push liquid proteins into her; I felt that was the quickest and easiest way to do it. She needed the proteins. The staff got her settled in the Luna’s suite and brought in two other beds for the twins. “The best thing for her right now is rest.” I tell the twins. They both nod their understanding. And I leave to go in search of the Alpha. I know he is going to need my help. It’s the hardest thing to do in our world, killing your own mate. I know he is hurting. And I know I can help, even if it’s to sedate his wolf.

DERRIC: I don’t know how long I was there. Holding and rocking Louise. I didn’t care. As bad as she was, she was still my mate. But she just couldn’t leave well enough alone when it came to Chiara. My wolf and I were on the same page, but to varying degrees. We both know we would do it again, to save the twins from having to do it. And to save their mate. And we both agree that she was bad. But that doesn’t change the fact that she was our fated mate. “Forgive me, goddess!” I breathed the prayer. *“Hush, my child. Do not grieve her loss. I know you loved her the best you could. But she was never going to change. And as the Luna, she would never allow change to come to the Pack.*
