CHIARA: “Are you going to give the twins anything for their birthday this year?” She asked, changing the subject. “What could I possibly give them? I have no money to get them a gift. And even if I did, there is nothing I could afford that they would accept, because it wouldn’t be good enough. They will just get the same old card that I have always given them, although I might change it up a little and punch stars out of the top part of the card and glue a white piece of paper behind it.” I said. “What card do you give them?” She asked me. “It’s a picture of two wolves facing each other, looking up and howling. I colored the wolves different colors when I was young. One year I made them blue, one year I made them red, I’ve made them black and grey, sometimes I would add a rainbow, others just the sun or the moon. This year, I think I will add the rainbow and the stars above it. Stencil in my usual greeting and call it good.” “What’s your greeting?” She asked me. “May the goddess bless you, Happy Birthday.” Fold it in half and put it in with the rest of the cards.” I say. “Can I see the picture?” “Sure.” I dig in my bottom drawer and pull out the original picture and show it to her. “Chi, that’s a beautiful picture.”  She tells me. “Yeah, I just wish I could copy it in the bracelets I make. I tell her. “I would make that piece into a necklace, you know the kind where it’s scroll cut and then add your seed beads to it.” She said. “I wish, where am I going to find someone to scroll cut this for me?” I asked her. “Talk to the wood shop teacher at school, he might be able to do that for you, have him cut two, then you will have a gift for the twins, that you made, and if you don’t let them know it’s from you, who knows?” “You got a point. I will check with him tomorrow after school.” I say as a yawn escapes me. “I’m going to take a nap before dinner.” I say and pass out on my bed.

IESHA: I called the clinic before heading over, and they told me that Chi was released. So, I headed over to the orphanage to check on her. I went up to her room. “Hey.” I greeted her roommate. “Hey, she’s asleep, but you might as well come in. I’m sure she’ll be up soon.” Donna tells me. “Hey Donna?” “Yeah?” “Do you ever think about what your mate might be like?” “Sometimes, I just hope that he or she won’t reject me because I’m an orphan and an omega.” “That’s crazy. If the moon goddess pairs you with someone, shouldn’t they automatically accept you?” “Not always, some wolves just want strength or status, I have neither.” She says to me. “Aren’t you worried that you don’t have your mate yet?” “No, I haven’t left the Pack, and we haven’t had any visitors here in a while. Once I get settled in my new space and get my new routine down, I may ask the Alpha if I can travel to a few nearby packs. But naw I’m not too worried about it right now.” I nod. “What about you? Are you looking forward to turning 18?” she asked. “Yes and no, I mean I want my mate, but I don’t want to lose my best friend. She wants to leave and find Jace’s family. I’m worried for her.” I said, looking in Chi’s direction as she slept. Donna nodded. Chi woke up shortly after that. “Hey, how are you?” I asked her. “I’m ok. I will get tired more easily for a while. But I’ll live. She says, with a bit of sarcasm. I nod my head in understanding. “Is there anything you want to do?” I asked her. “Can we just sit outside for a while, just to feel the sunshine?” “Sure.” “Thanks.” I nod. We get up, go downstairs, and go out the back door to the back steps of the orphanage. “Esha, please be careful next weekend. I don’t think I could handle losing another person.” She says to me. “Then come with me. We will have fun.” “I told you I don’t have anything to wear to something that fancy.” “You know if you don’t show up, the twins will come looking for you. They already told you they expect you to wear that bracelet they got you to the dance.” “They will be too busy with the ranked squad to notice that I’m not there. And if not the ranked squad, then all the other she-wolves that will throw themselves at their feet. It’s weird, too. Why would they get me a gift? They hate me. They won’t notice I’m not there.” “I wouldn’t put it past them.” I tell her. “If no one has my scent on them, and that includes you, that won’t set them off, out of sight, out of mind.” She quotes me. I shake my head at her. They called her in for dinner, and I headed home.

CHIARA: After dinner, I went back upstairs and pulled out my flash cards to study with them, just to make sure that I would pass my test tomorrow. I didn’t want to fail that test. I stayed up too late, and my eyes were sore. But I feel good about my test. I woke to my alarm going off, I quickly shut it off, gathered my clothes, and headed down the hall to the bathroom. And waited for my turn. We only had two, one for the boys and one for the girls. I just wish they could make it a little more like the gym locker rooms at school, where they had at least half a dozen showers. I know that that still isn’t enough for there, but it would work here. I took a quick shower, got dressed, went back to my room, grabbed my backpack, and headed down for breakfast. A P.B. and J toasted sandwich and a juice box. And off to school I went. It was strange walking back into school after being gone for a week. But I’m sure I’ll get back into it. I met Iesha at the lockers, and we headed to 1st hour. My test was 3rd hour. I kept my head down and didn’t say anything to anybody. It was strange, the energy felt off in the school.  For one thing, nobody picked on me, wait, what? That never happens. I usually get it from someone somewhere. This was strange. Not that I’m complaining, mind you. But still, it was like waiting for the other shoe to drop or something. The lunch bell rang after 4th hour, and I headed back to the locker area to put my books in my locker and meet up with Iesha. We headed into lunch together. “Is it just me, or does something feel off to you?” I asked her. “Yeah, something definitely feels off.” She answers me back.
