CHIARA: “What was his story?” Esha asked me. “He said that his parents and he were hiking in the woods when a rabid wolf jumped out at them. His mom was on the edge of a small ravine, and when the wolf jumped out at them, she fell into it and sprained her ankle. His dad had a branch that he was using like a walking stick. And he started brandishing it like a bat to ward off the wolf. But then he, too lost his footing and went down the ravine, but he hit his head on a rock, and Jace thinks he died right then. Jace himself was screaming and throwing stones at the wolf to try and chase it away. The wolf jumped into the ravine and killed his mom because she wasn’t able to get up and defend herself. And that’s when the warriors show up. Turns out the rabid wolf was a rogue, and the warriors killed it and brought Jace here. He was 8.” I told Iesha the story Jace told me. “He didn’t even last in this… pack 10 years, and they killed him.” I finished with tears in my eyes. “I’m sorry, Esha, I know this is your home.” I said. “It’s ok, they don’t make it easy for the omegas either. I hope that whoever they get mated to is better than they are, and can change them for the better.” Esha says. We were at the second-hand store and went inside to look around. I found a pair of ankle boots, and they were cute, Black with some embossing in a Celtic knot design. And a tasseled zip pull, a low, wide block heel. And they were only $8.00. I paid for the boots, and we headed back to the orphanage. By the time we got back, I had found a couple of dollars in change, so the boots actually only cost me $6.00. I am going to have to get all the change together and get it switched out for paper money. So, the sock isn’t so heavy. And get a count of how much is actually there. Thursday came, and there was a quiz in our 4th hour that we weren’t expecting, but both Esha and I passed with flying colors. And again, no Valen, no Cassie, no Carri, no Brandi, what the heck was going on? I went to my after-school class and made it back to the orphanage without a single person bothering me. I don’t like this. So, when Donna came in from her shift at the pack house, I asked her. “Do you have any idea what the hell is going on around here?” “What do you mean?” “So far, all this week, not one person has picked on me, called me a name, bullied me in any way, shape, or form.” I said to her. “It could have something to do with the fact that the twins have given the ranked squad punishment for how badly they beat you this last time.” “What? That makes no sense whatsoever. They are the ones who usually encourage the ranked squad, not punish them.” I said. “What I heard through the rumor mill is that they went off script when they put you in the clinic, and it pissed the twins off a bit, so they have their own punishment to do, and part of it is leaving you alone until the Prom/party.” She said. “Oh great, they are really going to do me in. They will have all that pent-up anger. I will be lucky if I survive it.” I said. “Chi don’t, don’t think like that, don’t talk like that.” “Look, Donna, I am only being truthful. You, at least, are a bit better off; you are a wolf. I am a human, and we both know what that means to the Luna. I am just being practical.” I said. “Speaking of practicality, when will you be leaving us?” “After graduation, I will be 20 and too old to be here anymore.” “I wish you all the best, Donna. You have been a great roomie.” I tell her. “I hope that you find yourself and live your best life when you do get out of here.” She says. “Thanks.” I have one more day of reprieve, and tomorrow is it. I go to my after-school class. “Mr. Thoren?” “Yes, Chiara.” “I may not be able to be here for a while after today.” “Why is that?” “I will probably be in the clinic, and I don’t want to lose my opportunity to learn a skill that may benefit me in the future.” “Why would you be in the clinic?” “It’s complicated, sir, please don’t pry. Just know that I don’t want you to think that I am just giving up on this.” “Ok, I won’t.” “Thank you.” “Welcome.” I finish up with my lesson and head back to the orphanage. I complete all my homework and have it ready for Iesha, leaving it out where she can easily access it.

Saturday morning, I report for morning duties at the Pack house. I go to work in the kitchen, doing the dishes from breakfast, and get things set up for lunch before I can get something for myself to eat. Being in the kitchen and working helps me to stay focused and not worry about what is going to happen to me tonight. Then it’s back to work, helping get things set up for the lunch service. Once lunch is done, it’s back to washing dishes and then helping to set up for the dinner service. Working in the kitchen is nice. I am out of sight of the ranked squad, so no bullying or hassles, and no scent transfers either. Just the work. Again, once the service starts, I can grab something for myself, and then I head back to the orphanage to get ready for the night. I grab the least of my favorites of Jace’s shirts, knowing that it will more than likely get ruined, and my least favorite pair of jeans, again for the same reason, and head to the bathroom to take a quick shower, wash my hair, and get dressed. I go back to my room and double-check everything to make sure it’s all ready to go for Iesha on Monday. Grab my bracelet that I got from the twins, and head out the door. I head over to Esha’s house. “Will you help me put this on?” I asked her. She clasped the bracelet on my wrist, and we headed to the school together. The Party/Prom is held at the school. The gym is for the actual dance-prom, and out the back doors of the gym is a small forested area of trees with a clearing in the center.  With the bonfire roaring, old car bench seating stacked on old plastic milk crates, so that you're not sitting on the ground. A make-shift bar, a couple of kegs. The party. Iesha and I walk into the gym to the bass thumping and music blaring. I find it interesting that as wolves they can take the music being that loud.
