IESHA*: “I will, Daddy, thank you.” “Welcome, be safe.” “Yes, Daddy.”* I closed the link. When I got to the clinic, I went to the reception desk. “Please tell me where Chiara Dawson is.” The guy behind the desk made a few keystrokes on his keyboard. “She is in the staff wing.” He says as he looks up to me. “Thank you,” I say and head to the staff wing. When I get there, I have the nurse’s station to inquire at. But I see Nurse Baker first. “Nurse Baker, please tell me where Chiara is.” “Come with me.” she says and leads me to Chi’s room. The minute I opened the door, I dropped my backpack and ran to her bed and just hugged her. I started crying, I couldn’t help it; she was back. “Oh, goddess Chi, I missed you so much!” I said crying. She just hugged me back. She held on to me and rocked me, rubbed circles on my back until I calmed down. I pulled away from her a little, and she smiled at me. Then she made the sign like writing. So, I grabbed a notebook out of my backpack and a pencil and handed it to her. ‘Sorry, Esha, I have something to share with you. But please don’t tell anyone what I am going to tell you. And when you get home, burn this note. First, the reason I am writing this is that my throat is too sore for me to speak; I would croak like a frog if I tried.’ She let me read what she wrote. “I promise.” I said with a chuckle at the last part of her sounding like a frog. ‘I was with Selene. I got to help with the new pups that she will assign to people. Oh, Esha, they were so cute and sweet.’ She let me read what she wrote. I smiled at that and nodded. “What was Salene like?” I asked her in a whisper. ‘She was beautiful, there was an air about her, that made me think that she could change how she looked to her followers.’ She wrote. “What do you mean by change how she looks?” I asked. ‘Like if you and your dad were standing in front of her, she would have flawless brown skin, and her hair would be however you would imagine it to be. And at the same time, if Alpha Derric was standing in front of her, she would look like the statues in her temple.’ She wrote. “Wow.” I said. And she nodded. “What did the Pups look like?” I asked her. ‘Most were grey, with some different markings. There were these two, one was grey, but she had two black paws and two tan paws, they were on opposite sides of her body, like an X, and the tips of her ears were white, along with white across her nose. And the other one again was grey. But all four of her paws were black. She had tan on the tips of her ears and on her snout. They were so adorable.’ She wrote. “Did you get to know their names?” I asked. She nodded and wrote. ‘The one with the offset paws was Thena, and the other one was Deena.’ She wrote. I nodded at her. ‘Thank you for coming to read to me. I enjoyed listening to you read Dracula. Did you get a better understanding of it?’ “Yes.” I huffed. She giggled at me. ‘Can you please get me some water?’ “Of course.” I grabbed her water container, filled it with water, and brought it back to her with the straw. I helped her to sit up a little better so she could drink it. ‘There was a girl in my room, she read me Black Beauty, who was she?’ She wrote out. “I don’t know who that might have been.” I answered her. “The twins might know.” I said to her. ‘Esha, do you know why there were posters of me up in the ICU room I was in?’ I hated this. After I read what she wrote. I nodded. “It was part of the ranked squad’s punishment; they had to stand a 30-minute vigil over you until you woke up, and they were up as a reminder and a warning that if you didn’t wake up, they would get one lash from the silver whip for every scar you have that they gave you. Plus, they have been spending nights in the cells for every day you’ve been in the coma.” I tell her. She looks at me like I am joking. ‘Really?’ “Yes, really. I even heard that the Luna is in the cells.” I whispered that last part to her. Her eyes went wide, like she couldn’t believe what I just said. I just nodded at her, like yep. ‘Wow.’ She wrote. I nodded ‘How long have I been out for?’ she wrote. “Almost a month. If it were past temple day, it would be a month.” I tell her. She seemed shocked at that as well. ‘I have to tell you, I did ask Salene if I could stay.’ She wrote. The minute I read that, I had tears in my eyes. ‘Hey, she told me no. But I could stay until my body was healed enough for me to be able to tolerate the rest of the healing. Plus, she said that I wouldn’t be able to find Jace’s people if I stayed with her. You know what that means, Esha?’  She wrote. I shook my head no at her. ‘It means that he has people out there, and I will find them and let them know that he is dead.’ She wrote with underlines. I gave her a sad smile and nodded. Then, as if something snapped in her head, she reached for her wrist. And panic set in. I knew exactly what she was going for. “Hey. It’s ok, they have it. But you will have to fix it. They cut it off when they set up the IV. Jayden taped the ends so they wouldn’t come completely undone.” I told her. ‘Please get it for me!’ she wrote, still coming out of her panic. I pushed the nurse's call button. Nurse Baker came in right away. “What can I do for you, Chiara?” she asked. But I was the one to answer her. “When Chiara was brought in a month ago, she had a braided bracelet, which got cut off and put with her personal things. She would like to have it. If it’s possible.” I told Nurse Baker. “I will see where her things got put and see if I can find them.” She answered. “Thank you.” Chiara was nodding the whole time. ‘Esha, how am I going to make up a whole month of school?’ She wrote. “I don’t know, but I will help however I can. But speaking of school, Mr. Thorne finished the necklaces for you when he heard you were in here in a coma. So, all you have to do is decorate, or paint them however you were going to do them.” I tell her. She nodded.
