Werewolf
Falling in love with my Ex's Alpha Chapter 101
***Jacob***
I run madly at the hospital when my mate tells me via mindlink that he has already arrived at Diamond Claw.
Once I see him, nothing else matters. All that matters is having him around.
In my arms.
I forget any shame or fear I may have at that moment and run to him.
I hug him tight, not really caring about the pained reaction he makes to my grip.
"I'm fine, Jake, don't worry! I'm fine," he assures me as he runs his hand down my back.
Fuck this man, he doesn't know how much I care about him.
If something happens to him in this battle... Ugh.
I itched the whole way to turn around and go with him to Dawnstar when I came to Diamond Claw with Katie.
And even with a thousand things to be done at the Defense Center, my thoughts were still with him.
Not just my thoughts but my heart, too.
Chad tasked me with some things to do, some that I already understand because it's what I train at the Elite Training Center.
I had been poring over the data, trying to understand what went wrong, and I thought I had finally found it — the serious error that had allowed the recent attack on the Dawnstar pack.
The mistake, it seemed, was tied to a critical system update. The head of the defence center, who is Chad, had authorized it, but something was off. The update introduced a vulnerability, a backdoor through which the attackers had managed to breach our defences. It was a mistake that had appeared as if he had allowed the attack to happen... But that can't be true.
As I delved deeper, I realized the update had been rushed and implemented without proper testing or oversight. It had felt almost as if someone had wanted it to go unnoticed until it was too late. But here was the catch — it wasn't enough to prove Chad's complicity. It could have been a genuine error, a costly one, but not necessarily an intentional act of sabotage.
A chilling realization began to dawn on me. One of the most damning outcomes of this mistake was the unexplained shortage of defenders during the attack.
The error had resulted in a critical system failure that affected our communication and coordination. We were caught off guard, and our response had been slow and disjointed. It was as if the error had been timed to coincide with the attack, leaving the small pack vulnerable and without enough people to mount a strong defence.
It raised questions about whether this error was indeed a mere mistake or something more insidious...
The more I look at this mistake, the more it seems like it was a mistake made on purpose.
But I'm sure it wasn't Chad.
He is the Diamond Claw's Gama.
This means that there is someone at the Defense Center who did this.
Who could it be?
I don't know many people here in this sector, and when I was going to tell Chad, Jay told me he was coming home, so I stopped everything and went to him.
But I couldn't ignore the mounting evidence pointing to a potential betrayal from within.
"How are you feeling?" I ask him after sensing his neck to calm myself down.
The problem is that just this simple act is enough for my cock to take on a life of its own.
Fuck! Look where we are!
He smiles at the corner of his mouth when he notices the look in my eyes of lust for him, he breathes a sigh of relief, "I'm better now, you're here."
I give him a smile, but we are interrupted by other warriors. Jay starts barking some orders at them, and I try to look for Katie while he's busy.
I could ask for her at reception but it is currently empty.
I find Chad covered in blood, but the blood doesn't appear to be his, just wearing shorts in the hallway.
"Have you seen Katie?" I ask him, and he clutches his wrists.
"She's with Kaiden in the fifth room on the right," he points in the direction, and I go there, something seems strange...
"What happened?" I shout when I enter the room, and Katie is sitting on a bed; her neck is swollen and scarred, and it looks like someone strangled her.
I run to her, Kaiden is on the other side of her, as always, with a serious and authoritative face.
"I-I'm f-f-fine now, Jake," she tries to say, but her voice cracks, sounding like her vocal cords are hurt.
I scoff and shake my head, "I can hear from your voice how good you are, Kitkatie," I tell her, and she gives me a smile.
You can see on her face how tired she is. She certainly couldn't have stopped for a minute here at the hospital, but what could have caused this to happen to her neck?
"Who did this to her?" I turn to Kaiden and ask seriously. Clearly, Kaite can't answer.
"It doesn't matter anymore. He's already dead." Kaiden speaks in an authoritative voice. The scars on his face were suddenly more evident.
Katie takes out her cell phone, types something with some difficulty and shows it to me.
*It was Becca's mate.* *He was the one who caused the attack on Dawnstar... because Kaiden killed her.*
I widen my eyes at her when I read the message.
Damn! Did Becca have a mate?
Why did she never tell Katie?
Something is wrong with all this. Something is off.
Kaiden takes Katie's cell phone and sees the message she typed. Then, he gives it back to her.
Zero privacy with this guy!
"Kaiden, I found an error in the defence system," I say to him. I was hoping to talk to Chad first, but I think it's better to speak to Kaiden since he's already here.
Katie's eyes widen and she looks at me and Kaiden, seeing our interaction, but whimpers in pain when she moves her neck.
"What did you find?" Kaiden asks me immediately.
"Well, it seems that there was an update error, which made the attack viable just when there was almost no one to defend Dawnstar and—"
"What on earth would there be a mistake like that?" he cuts me. "There is a whole defence system to prevent this from happening!" he shouts at me as though it was my mistake!
"I know, the problem was that it coincided right with the time of the attack... I haven't told Chad yet," I say, and this time, he looks thoughtful, as if he's analyzing the situation.
"Okay. I lead the way from here," he says after a few moments.
The door to the room we are in is suddenly open, and several warriors begin to enter, crowding almost the entire space.
Some are bloodied, others are in better condition, and others are injured.
Chad enters, and then Jason enters; the two of them head in the direction where Katie and I are.
"Did you call us, Alpha?" Chad says.
Kaiden stands up and starts barking at everyone present, "What the fuck happened here while I was gone? How do you guys let a tiny pack get invaded like that? I can't believe your lack of competence! Starting tomorrow, I want an updated assessment of all the warriors who protect all my territories!" he orders in Jay's direction.
"Yes, Alpha," Jay replies seriously.
"The amount of training should be doubled. We're in a fucking tournament. This kind of thing should be impossible to happen in my territory! Chad, I want a full report of the mistakes made in this attack; update all defence systems! You better impress me!" he says, advancing towards Chad almost as if he was going to rip his head off.
"Yes, Alpha," Chad submits to him.
"Jacob, your training from today onwards will be at the Defense Center—"
"But he can only go after he graduates, Alpha!" Chad responds, cutting Kaiden off.
My gaze goes back and forth between the two of them. Everyone's gaze goes the same.
"Did I fucking ask you anything, Gama?" He pulls up next to Chad, their noses almost touching, and Chad looks at the floor.
"No, Alpha, sorry." he answers quietly.
"Starting tomorrow, all pack warriors will have to double their physical training," Kaiden orders everyone. "Including you!" He points to Katie, and she lets out the tiniest gasp with a little jump when he addresses her. Frankly, I try hard not to laugh.
She is so adorable.
"You're going to start training with me every day. You need to be more prepared than everyone here because you don't have a wolf to defend yourself." He speaks to her in a way that leaves no room for any argument.
Oh, Kaiden... If you only knew.
