There's a moment right after our mate bond settles when I see the panic rise in her, the terror of what happened clearly in her eyes.

I pull her closer to me, and she starts to cry. I sit and lean on the headboard of the bed and put her on my lap. She hugs me, and I feel this urge to touch every part of her body, but the life growing in her belly stops me.

I throw my arms around her and hold her face in my hands as I wipe away her tears. "You're not human," I raise an eyebrow in affirmation. *It's not a question*.

She nods, and I take a deep breath, "Did you know that? You promised me you would never hide anything from me again," I say, looking into her eyes. I can feel through our mate bond her sadness about this and, fuck, I can't even believe I'm already forgiving her so easily.

"I had no choice," she says softly, her eyes sad, "I had to do this–"

"Why didn't you tell me? I gave you so much opportunity for this!" I can't help but throw it in her face.

"I didn't know what else to do," her eyes fill with tears, "I'm sorry–"

"Why, Katherine?" I ask firmly, even though I'm trying my best to avoid the rage in my tone. "Why didn't you tell me the truth sooner? I would have marked you a long time ago!"

"That's the problem! You would have marked me and ruined everything!" my little sun *growls* at me, and then she is startled by the way she growled. She puts both hands over her mouth like she had no control over her growl, which for me, it was so fucking adorable as I stifle my smile. "I'm sorry!" she says shyly.

"You deliberately didn't want me to mark you because I would ruin everything?" I am taken by surprise and try not to let the pang of sadness invade my heart.

"No! It's not that," she shakes her head desperately, with wide eyes, and then she looks away as if she is taking a deep breath and thinking about what to say, and I start to get irritated.

"Are you going to lie to me again?" I snarl at her.

"No! I don't know where to start... The thing is, I didn't know I was a she-wolf. I always thought I was human. I found out recently when we visited my parents, and they told me," she starts to explain. I take a deep breath and try to control myself to not interrupt her as she continues. "They told me that I have a red wolf and that they are a rare type of wolf with special abilities–"

"Your healer gift?" I interrupt her.

"Exactly! I also only discovered this gift by chance, not long before I met Cha–" she shakes her head as if deleting the last sentence, and I'm grateful because if she mentions that fucker's name now, I don't even know what I do. "Anyway, I wanted to tell you, I wanted you to mark me. Believe me, baby! That's what I wanted most!" she says as she holds my face with her soft hands.

"Then why didn't you tell me? Why didn't you let me mark you?"

"Because my parents suppressed my wolf when I was a child, they needed to cage my wolf to protect our pack," I get confused, and she realizes and continues explaining, "our pack was always being attacked because of the three sacred trees, so my parents needed to use my wolf to create a protective barrier around my pack," she explains. "That's why, even though it's so small, my pack is safe and doesn't have attacks," she says softly, and the terror returns to her eyes.

"And now that your wolf has been released?" I ask, suddenly feeling guilty about what I did. Fuck!

"Now they don't have the protective barrier anymore," she says with eyes full of tears, "I'm so scared," she puts her hands on her face, "I don't want anything to happen to them, I was willing not to have my wolf just to protect them!"

I pull her closer to me and kiss her forehead, "Shh, don't worry, I won't let anything happen to them! Remember my promise? I said I would protect your pack, and I mean it!" She cries even more in my arms.

"I should call them right now. I should–"

"Calm down! You need to calm down!" I interrupt her when she starts babbling. "Breathe," she does as she was told, and I'm pleased to see her obeying me. "We already had plans to visit them next week and tell them about the pregnancy. We're going to change our plans. We're going to visit them this week and tell them everything–"

"But we should go now–"

"Katherine!" I growl at her, suddenly irritated by the thought of the small possibility of her leaving my side. I need her here right where she is, pressed into my lap, naked, skin on skin.

My growl doesn't scare her. If there's an answer, it's the opposite. I see her pupils dilating lustfully, and I feel how turned on she is by my growl through our mate bond. I try with all my might to ignore it as I continue, "You just almost died!" I snarl, and she widens her eyes, seeming to suddenly remember everything. Her eyes roam around the room and hover over where I found her passed-out body, then she looks at where there is the pool of Laila's blood, where Laila's headless body was.

"What happened?" she asks softly, rubbing her belly.

"I needed to mark you because I had no choice," I defend myself, "only our mate bond could save your life and our baby's life because Laila poisoned you," I explain, "and then I killed her," I speak honestly, and she widens her eyes as she puts both hands in her mouth again.

"I didn't want it to get to this point," she says with tears in her eyes.

"What do you mean?" I ask, suddenly becoming alert.

"She found out about the contract we made and was threatening me with it–"

"Why didn't you fucking tell me?" I shake her by the shoulders and regret it immediately, but my fury is uncontrollable, "I almost lost you! I almost lost my heir! You should have told me that, I would have killed her before she tried to kill you!" I yell at her.

If our room wasn't soundproof, I'm sure even the neighbours in the next block could hear me.

"I didn't want to see anyone else die, Kaiden," she cries, and I hug her, fuck, I can't see her crying, it feels like I'm running out of air. "I didn't like her, but I didn't want you to kill her because of me," she says between sobs, "I'm so sorry!"

Fuck, I almost lost her for something I could have avoided. Sometimes, I forget how much she doesn't have a bad bone in her body. That's why I always have to be vigilant because if it depended on my little mate's soft heart, I wouldn't kill anyone.

I take a deep breath, and she hugs me back, stopping crying. I pull her away from me a little and look into her eyes, "Promise me that you will never lie or hide anything from me again! And I mean it, Katherine!" I say firmly. "I will not–"

"I promise! I swear I won't lie or hide anything from you again!" she says with all her heart, I feel the truth in her eyes and in my own heart through our mate bond.

I seal her promise with my lips, I kiss her savagely, and she puts her arms around my neck.

"Wasn't your wolf supposed to speak out? Can you talk to your wolf?" I ask, curious because Troy is almost going feral, wanting his fated mate.

"My wolf still hasn't spoken to me. I tried, but I haven't heard any answer from her," she says sadly.

"Let's try shifting when you feel better. Maybe after that, your wolf will wake up," I tell her and see the hope in her eyes.

My hands move to her ass to pull her back into my chest. She feels so tiny against me, so fucking fragile, even though I know that she's stronger now.

Suddenly, I feel her bond come out and brush against me as well, calling out to mine. I almost snap and lose my shit on her.

She feels too fucking perfect. I barely break away from her to speak, and the whimper she lets out is my new addiction as she hugs me.

She still can't talk to me via mindlink, but she can hear me.

I press our foreheads together and then send through just to her how much I love her and all the wicked things I intend to do with her now that I know she is a she-wolf.
