Werewolf
Falling in love with my Ex's Alpha Chapter 110
***Jacob***
"I don't know how we're going to tell her," Chad says, whispering close to me so Katie doesn't hear.
We are in the penultimate pack conquered by Kaiden.
We were getting ready to go to the last pack when Chad and other warriors, who were in packs nearby, found us so we could all go together.
The tragedy that no one expected happened a minute ago, when Chad received a message via mindlink that rogues attacked Kaiden by surprise and took his life.
I'm still paralyzed. It doesn't seem real.
I don't know how to tell Katie. We're just a few minutes away from the last pack he conquered. Chad doesn't know how to inform her, much less me.
"Hey, guys...uhm, I don't know what's wrong, but I've got this tightness in my chest, I think I'm going to need to rest for a bit before we go any further," Katie interrupts Chad's whispering, and he and I look at each other.
Even though her wolf is dormant, I know she can still feel her fated mate, just like when Kaiden went to the first round.
She's feeling this way because he died, maybe if her wolf wasn't dormant, she might be able to feel him.
Chad approaches her closer as if she were a hurt and defenceless animal, "Katie, there's something we need to tell you," he uses a soft voice to talk to her.
"What is it?" She looks at both of us, waiting for one of them to speak, but we both remain silent. I imagine that, like me, he also doesn't know what to say. "You guys are scaring me," she says, now sounding like a helpless little animal.
"Kaiden..." Chad decides to talk to her, "some rogues attacked him..." he looks away from her innocent doe eyes, "he... he died, beautiful," he concludes.
Immediately, she opens her eyes wide and looks around her. Everyone has a sad expression, and she instantly realizes that something is wrong.
Almost everyone here has already received the news via mindlink, we are the only two who are not from Diamond Claw.
"No!" she says and starts shaking her head from side to side, denying it, her eyes already filling with tears. "No! You are lying," she says, her voice as shaken as her face.
"He isn't lying, Katie," I say, trying to move closer to comfort her.
"No! I don't believe that!" She shouts and runs out to Kaiden's car, which I've been driving since yesterday.
"Katie, wait!" I run after her, and before she gets in the car, I pull her and hold her by the shoulders, "Kitkatie, there's nothing you can do; if you go, you'll get worse when you see his body," her little fists try to push me away, but she can't. It's not even enough to move me.
"Let go of me, Jake! I want my mate, I need to see him," tears come out of her face uncontrollably, and my heart hurts seeing her like this.
"I'll take you to him," I tell her, trying to hug her, but she breaks out of my hug and runs to the other side to get in the car.
I can't let her drive, she's shocked, she'll end up having an accident.
Chad approaches the car and gets in, too, "I'm going with you," he says and puts his hand on Katie's shoulder.
"Jake, put the pedal to the metal or let me drive," she shouts at me, and I start driving quickly towards the last pack. I know where it is, so I don't need a map.
I drive as fast as I can. Katie doesn't stop crying; her eyes are already swollen, and from time to time, she yells at me to go faster. I feel agony at her distress, but I imagine that if it were the other way around, I would be like that, too.
Chad also has an expression of suffering; I imagine it must be difficult for him to lose not only his Alpha but also a brother.
As soon as I start to see the entrance to the pack, I can see several people sad and shaken by Kaiden's death. I head in the direction that Chad is receiving via mindlink where Kaiden's body is.
Katie is even more impatient; for her, she would run on her own two feet to Kaiden.
You can even see the suffering of the people who live in this pack, I can't even imagine the confusion and the feeling of loss they are feeling.
Every time an Alpha dies, the whole pack feels it; even with everyone fearing Kaiden so much, you can see how shocked they are by his death.
As soon as we get close to where several people are crowded, I know that's where Kaiden's body is. Some wolves are around him howling, I can feel their pain in each note of suffering.
"Stop the car! Stop the car, Jake!" Katie shouts at me and I stop the car before she throws herself out of the moving car.
Before the car even stops, Katie gets out of the car and runs to where Kaiden is. People make way for her to pass with an expression of sadness and understanding in their eyes.
Chad and I got out of the car next and followed Katie.
"No! No!" Katie cries and kneels on the ground where Kaiden's bloodied body is.
Her hand shakes when she takes his hand and kisses it, even though his hand is dirty and bloody. Tears roll from her eyes without stopping.
"He's gone, Katie," Chad says, standing to her left, with a hand on her shoulder, "you're going to be even sadder seeing him like this," he tries to lift her up.
"No! Let me go," she cries, shaking her shoulder and he takes his hand off her shoulder.
There's nothing left to do. Even with his body obviously dead, I still try to listen to Kaiden's heartbeat. It's no surprise when I only hear silence and Katie's cries mixed with the howls of the warriors who fought on Kaiden's side.
Katie rocks her body back and forth, hugging Kaiden's lifeless hand. I'm starting to think Chad is right. Maybe it's not good for her to see him like this.
However, I don't have the strength in me to take her away from her fated mate.
I don't know what it will be like from here. Everyone is devastated by Kaiden's death.
What will they do now without their Alpha?
I can feel Jay's pain. I've never felt my mate as sad as I am feeling now. I can feel how desperate he is, he seems just as devastated as Katie.
Kaiden was more than an Alpha to him. Kaiden was his brother.
Chad stands next to me; the sadness written on his face and the face of everyone around me makes it almost impossible to breathe.
I look into Katie's eyes and see not only sadness and grief but also regret. I know her, I know she's blaming herself for not arriving sooner to save him.
She had no way of knowing. No one could have known that he would die like that, right in the last pack of this stupid tournament.
Katie puts her hand where the wounds on Kaiden's neck are, and I know immediately that she's going to try to close it even though he's dead. I kneel down next to her and try to stop her.
"Katie, he's gone," I hold her hand, "there's nothing you can do," I say, looking into her eyes so she understands that I'm talking about her gift.
No one here can know her secret, or she will be next with her body lying on the ground. Not now that Kaiden is dead and can no longer protect her.
"I need to try, Jake, please," she squeezes my hand with eyes so sad they make me want to cry too.
"I know... But it's no use anymore... His heart stopped beating a long time ago. He's been dead since we left the other pack," I try to put logic in the situation, but she shakes her head.
"Please, Jake, I need to try—"
"Katie," I say to her and look around at the several people around us. She follows my gaze and understands what I mean.
"I don't care. I need to try to save him, Jake. Right now, I just want my mate back," she says as tears come out of her eyes.
I take a deep breath and close my eyes, when I open my eyes again, I start barking at everyone around, "let your Luna grieve her loss," everyone looks at me as I wave my hand, coercing them to move away. "Give her a moment alone with him," I keep barking at them.
"Do what he's saying," Chad interferes on my behalf, and everyone starts to dissipate; the people and the wolves move away, leaving just Chad and I close to Katie.
"I'll take care of her, I think you'd better go and see how the others are, they need guidance right now," I tell Chad so he can leave, too.
He looks at Katie and hesitates for a moment, "I think she needs me more now!"
"If she needs anything, I'll call you, don't worry," I say, and he looks at me, still hesitant.
"Okay then, call me if she needs me!" He says with his head down and leaves in the direction everyone left.
Before he even leaves her side, Katie already has one hand on Kaiden's throat and the other on his heart.
"*Please, come back to me, please, come back to me,*" she repeats over and over as she presses her small hands to Kaiden's wounds.
Tears roll down her face and fall onto his lifeless body as she tries with all her might to bring him back.
However, his heart is still not beating.
He's still dead.
"*Don't l-leave me...*" she sobs desperately, "*Troy, please!*" her voice is so painful to hear that I look away.
It's a lot of suffering, I don't know how she will live from now on.
"*Please, Kaiden! Come back to me,*" she says in a firmer voice, and I return my gaze to where she is, her eyes closed as she presses on his wounds.
Her hands are already bloody with his blood. I look at Kaiden's face and see something that wasn't there before.
Or rather, the lack of something that was there before.
The huge scar that was on Kaiden's face disappeared at the same time I heard a single beat of his heart.
