Werewolf
Falling in love with my Ex's Alpha Chapter 46
Desperation clawed at the edges of my composure, threatening to unravel my carefully woven facade. The idea of her discovering the truth churned my stomach into knots. Panic coursed through me like an electric charge, setting my heart into a wild gallop.
What if she finds out? My heart started to race, and I knew she knew I was lying right then and there when her gaze shifted away from my eyes towards my racing heart.
My racing heart had captivated her attention. It was a moment of vulnerability, an unspoken acknowledgment that the truth hung in the air, heavy and laden with unvoiced fears. Each beat resonated in my chest, a thunderous drumroll of my inner turmoil.
My trembling heart betrayed the unspoken words I dared not utter.
When she opened her mouth to say something, the student who had gone to call Dr. Smith appeared.
He looked at her confused but then flashed a confident smile, "I knew one of those antidotes would help you," he proclaimed, "I almost emptied all of our stock," his footsteps echoed with intent as he crossed the room, his path leading him toward the very bed upon which she sat.
Her gaze remained locked on my eyes, and the air in the room grew thick with suspense as she answered him. "Yes," her voice weighted with layers of meaning, "one of the antidotes must have worked."
"Then I'm going to call Dr. Smith and tell him he doesn't have to come to help you anymore," he said, leaving the room. Frankly, I think he just wants to finish his shift and leave.
We stayed silent, looking at each other, until she decided to speak, this time in a smaller, firmer, and calmer voice, "Thank you for saving my life, I don't know what you did, but I know that you saved me, Luna. My name is Charlotte," she wiped her hand on her pants and held it out to me.
"How did you-" she cut me off.
"How do I know you're Luna? I saw you the day you went to train with Alpha, and I was also present the day he told the pack that you're our Luna," she said with a smile of happiness, and then it got serious, "I'm going to report those two idiots to Alpha, they not only treated me unprofessionally but also disrespected you, Luna," she said firmly and I widened my eyes in surprise.
"No need to say anything. It's okay. They're from another pack, they shouldn't even know," I said, trying to convince her.
"It's my duty to do this, Luna," she said coldly, and I decided not to question her.
The room was suddenly infused with energy as Jason burst in, his footsteps echoing like a drumbeat in my ears. His swift entrance startled me as he ran towards Charlotte.
"Katie?" His eyes scanned the room, a hint of surprise in his gaze as if he hadn't expected to find me there. Then, his attention shifted to Charlotte, concern etching lines on his face. He took her hand tenderly, concern and affection intermingling. "Char, how are you feeling? As soon as I found out, I came running. Why didn't you mind-link me?" His voice was a mixture of worry and affection, revealing the deep connection they shared.
"I didn't mean to worry you, and also... I was in so much pain I couldn't even tell you," Charlotte replied softly, her voice carrying a vulnerability that tugged at my heartstrings. "But now I'm fine. Luna saved me." She winked at me, acknowledging my presence.
"Thanks for helping her, Katie," Jason said, his words accompanied by a slight bow of his head, a gesture of gratitude that made me feel oddly welcomed yet curious about their relationship.
"It's my job, no need to thank me," I replied, fighting my curiosity about their relationship. The closeness between them was evident, both warriors in their own right, and I couldn't help but wonder if their relationship was like that because of how much time they spent together or for other reason.
Jason's next question caught me off guard. "Is she discharged yet? I'm taking her to our house." My eyes widened, but I quickly concealed my confusion, not wanting to pry or make assumptions. Did they live together? The question hung in the air, and Jason must have seen my perplexed expression because he offered a reassuring smile and an explanation. "Katie, Char is my big sister."
Ah, it all fell into place now. I chuckled softly and raised my eyebrows, relieved that he wasn't cheating on Jake. "How can she be your older sister when she looks younger than you?" I teased, earning laughter from both of them.
"I'm only two years older than him, but for me, he's my little younger brother. Since our parents died, I've taken care of him," Charlotte explained, their bond and mutual support shining through their words. At that moment, I couldn't help but miss my own older brother, but I found comfort in the fact that I had Jake by my side.
With a mischievous gleam in his eyes, Jason turned his attention to me. "Little Luna, guess who's waiting for you?" His words held an enigmatic promise, and I didn't quite grasp the implication until my heart began to race. Both of them noticed my reaction simultaneously, their keen senses catching my surprise.
Damn wolves' sense, I thought, caught off guard!
Ugh! My inner turmoil laid bare for all to see.
He shook his head with a hint of playful secrecy as if I had completely missed the mark, and then he continued in a tone laced with anticipation, "He's waiting for you in the reception," he made sure not to tell me if it was Chad or Kaiden. Maybe he doesn't want Charlotte to find out that I'm dating Chad.
I want to believe that because it would be a nightmare if he found out that my first guess was Kaiden.
