ALANA

As if on cue, Lucas appeared on the door ready to get me.

“Alpha prince, I will be the one to escort Alana into her new room.”

William sighed before shaking his head, surprising me. I thought he already consented to me leaving for another room. I looked at Lucas and then back to him. Did the beta’s presence change William’s mind?

Is there a possibility that he knows that Lucas claims to be my mate too? I shuddered at the thought especially when I sensed that the two men seemed to be having a cold war themselves.

No, it can’t be.

William took my hand and put it in the big pocket of his jeans. “No, I changed my mind. My mate will stay in my room where she belongs.”

“William…” I muttered and looked at his determined face.

Francine stepped back with her hands in the air as if surrendering to let the two men settle this.

If I let William have his way, then I am afraid that the rift between him and the alpha king would become wider. That’s what I am most wary of because I know just how much William loves his parents. I don’t want to be the reason for their animosity especially when there is definitely a more peaceful way to navigate through this.

Lucas stared right back into his alpha’s eyes sending him the message that he is also not backing down.

“Alpha prince, you know that I am your loyal beta but I cannot just ignore the alpha king’s order. William, I’m really sorry but I have to take Alana from your room now.”

William chuckled and put a hand around my waist to show possessiveness. Lucas just gritted his teeth, his eyes turning cold.

“Loyal, huh.” William laughed bitterly. “Lucas, if you are really loyal to me, then you will show me how loyal you are. Alana is my mate. There is no way I am letting her go away from me. She will be here. She will stay nowhere but here by my side!”

Lucas nodded and spoke. “I know that, alpha prince, but we cannot really disobey the order of the alpha king. He will be angrier if he learns that you are trying to disrespect him. I will have to take Alana from you.”

He moved to take me but William’s bulky body immediately blocked him from even touching me.

“As if I am going to let you. No, Lucas. As I’ve said, Alana is going nowhere. I will see to it that she will always just be here by my side,” he growled as his eyes began to turn black. “Anyone who will try to take her from me will be mercilessly killed by my own hands.”

Lucas did not back down and kept his face straight. “I am sorry too, alpha prince, but I was directly instructed by the alpha king to bring Alana into the dormitory. Don’t worry, I will make sure to take care of her. No one will harm her there because I will be her number one protector in exchange for you. Please, give her to me now.”

That statement must have angered William more because he grabbed his collar and snarled right at his face. “Then try to take her from me. Just try me, Lucas.”

The two men stared at each other measuring each other’s abilities that instant.

“William, please,” I said and tugged at his arm to de-escalate things.

I know Lucas got nothing on him as the alpha prince but I also do not want things to get out of hand.

I cupped his face and asked him the same thing he asked me back then. “William, do you trust me?”

He was caught off guard knowing that I am planning on going with Lucas. “Of course, I do. I do trust you but I do not trust the people around you.”

I forced myself to smile at him even when all I wanted to do is curl up to him and tell him that we should just run away together out of here to a place far away where we can be together. “I will be fine. I promise you that.”

He gazed at my face and when he saw that I am as determined as him, he could only pull me closer and kissed my head as he slowly let him go.

“I will call later. No, I will go to you. I will always check on you from time to time,” he whispered in my ear before letting Lucas take me away.

When we arrived at the girl’s dormitory, there was already a big room reserved for me. The night came and I was already feeling too anxious about not seeing William and sniffing his scent.

Secretly, I fished out the phone from my luggage that Francine put in and called William. He answered on the first ring.

“I miss you. I miss you so much,” he said in a pained voice.

I took a long deep breath but my heart only ached for more of him. “I want to see you, William. Please, I want to see you.”

“I am coming over, Alana.”

But before I could answer William, someone from the back already took the phone away from me.

“Lucas! Please, give the phone back to me.”

The beta’s face was pissed as he turned off the phone and put it in his back pocket. “I’m sorry Alana but the alpha king told me not to let you communicate with the alpha prince while the tests are ongoing. It will be too unfair with the other contestants.”

I stood up from the bed angrily. “I am William’s mate! I would die if I won't see him!”

His eyes softened at me as he surveyed my nightgown under the robe. “But you have me, Alana. I am your mate too so you will not miss him that much.”

I immediately tied my robe, gritting my teeth in the process. “You will never be my mate, Lucas. I’d rather die than let you be one!”

I pushed him out of my room, locked the door, and covered myself with the sheets and let my tears fall.

Oh, how I wish William was here with me.
