ALANA

I glanced at the queen luna who gently nudged me to the direction of the alpha king outside the hall.

“Go, Alana. He will tell you everything you need to know.”

She gripped my hands and tried very hard to keep the tears from falling but they still came out like a dam cascading down her face.

“My son loves you very much, dear.” Her voice started trembling. “Until the end of his breath, he still chose to protect you.”

She touched my face before sadly smiling. “I’m sorry because I was too weak and complacent. I was not able to protect you and my son. I let my husband, the alpha king, do what he thinks is right and just. I am a worthless mother. I do not deserve to be William’s mother.”

I held her hands and shook my head. “Queen luna, do not say that. William is very proud to have you and the alpha king as his parents. He always talks about you with me. He said you will be a wonderful mother to our kids.”

My voice croaked knowing that that will never happen again. I will for sure spend the rest of my life trying to end it so I could meet him earlier.

I will live with a hollow in my heart yearning to see his face again. I will forever hope for the time when he will wait for me at the end of the tunnel.

The queen luna wiped the tears on my face. “I know my lapses, Alana. The guilt of leaving her to Francine and being an absentee mother to him is real. I’m even prouder that he turned out the best son. He is the best son by protecting you. My son loves you so much, my dear.”

She took a deep breath and pushed me to the direction where the alpha king disappeared into. “Go now. After this, we will see William together again.”

I nodded my head and clenching my hands to my sides, walking to the alpha king.

My feet led me to the library where I saw the alpha king facing the humungous books in front of him.

“Alpha king,” I said, sounding firm even when I am dying inside. 

I don’t know why but I feel like I’m about to throw up.

“You might think that I am a worthless alpha king letting the injustice that happened to you go unnoticed,” he said with his back still on me.

He’s holding something in his hands but I cannot see it.

“Yes, alpha king,” I replied abruptly. No need to sugarcoat my answer when that is really what I am feeling at the moment. “At times, my heart thinks that you are an unfair leader for ignoring the pleas of an abused woman. I am innocent. I was the one taken advantage of but I felt like you will side with my oppressors.”

I cleared my throat and wiped my face when tears began clouding my vision again. “But the only consolation I have now is you brought William into this world to love and protect me. That is enough for me already. Your unfairness, your siding with Killian… all of that disappears every time I think how wonderful your son is. Without you, I would have never met him. I would never have the chance of being loved by him.”

The alpha king looked at me, without the usual dark expression on his face. His features are low, relaxed, with sadness evident all over it.

“And I am thanking no one but you that you turned the best for my son even without the guidance of your parents. Even without experiencing how it is to love and be loved, Alana.”

He handed me a photo and I received it with trembling hands.

“They’re your mother and father.”

Gritting my teeth, I stared at the couple in the photo happily smiling together. Their hands are entwined as they pose for a photo in this same library.

“T-They are my mother and father?” I asked just to make sure when I really did not have to know that my features in the reflection of my mirror are too similar with my mother but the way I smile and the warmth in my eyes came from my father.

I caressed their faces with my trembling fingers.

Parents… I really have one and I finally saw my father’s face.

“I loved your mother, Alana. Everyone in the pack does. She’s just the most beautiful and elegant woman I have ever laid my eyes on. Alpha Killian felt the same too. I know I could not have her because she’s already in love with your father, the lycan prince and ultimately, the succeeding lycan king, and is only waiting for the announcement of their engagement.”

He paused and filled his lungs with air. “The engagement happened despite the objection of the alpha king. People are happy because the lycans and werewolves, two warring factions, are finally going to unite as one with the marriage of the two.”

I gasped for air when everything felt too much for me to take at the moment.

“And so, your grandfather devised a plan that he thought will usher a new era to the packs. He cannot allow his daughter to marry the lycan king because her blood cannot be mixed with him because it will only make the monster in the bloodline stronger. He cannot allow his future grandchildren to be like him… haunted by the red monster inside him that he can’t control. He cannot allow his own blood to sever all his kind.”

My tears fell and I opened my mouth to say something. Does it mean that…

“Yes, Alana,” the alpha king nodded, reading my mind. “The former alpha king is the same as you. He cannot control his urge to kill. With the lycan blood in you, it will make it more potent and lethal.”

He walked up to me.

“Alana, your grandfather made me promise one thing before he begged me to kill him and that is to prevent someone like him from ever being born… even when it is his own grandchild.”

He took my hand and put a small notebook with the pages already tanning from the years that it had been kept.

“This is written by your grandfather with his own blood. You can verify that since you have his blood on your veins.”
