ALANA

I woke up that morning with a freshly picked bouquet of flowers and a note from William saying he’s going back into patrolling the borders. With a satisfied smile on my face, I prepared myself and went to work with an infectious kind of vibe that Lucas and Francine cannot help but notice.

When I arrived at the office, I called one of the maids assigned to me to inquire about Ana. I brought the girl with me when I chanced upon her selling fruits on the sidewalk.

“Did you see Ana? I was told she’s here in the office already. Where is she?”

There is an unmistakable concern in my face knowing that she is not used in the mansion. She must have been lost in the woods.

The maid bowed before me. “I am sorry, ambassadress, but Madam Sophia called her to be in her quarters. She said she had something to make her do.”

My brows arched. Sophia? Why would she specifically get the child that is under my care?

“Sophia? And can you tell me what are the things she wanted an 11-year-old to do for her?”

The maid shook her head. “I am sorry but I have no idea, ambassadress.”

I sat on the chair and clasped my hands together. There are many things that are running in my head right now. “Take Ana from her and bring the child here. Tell Sophia it’s my order.”

There was a hesitation in her face but she reluctantly erased it when she saw me staring at her. “Yes, ambassadress.”

“Thank you.”

I waited in my office for minutes and when the maid came back with a red face from an obvious slap, I could only bite my lower lip in anger.

Sophia is known to terrorize the maids in the mansion hiding behind the cloaks of our alpha father. She is always tolerated because no one would dare to stand up against the alpha and his equally cruel luna.

“Ambassadress, Madam Sophia refused to give back Ana. She said that from now on, the child will be under her command.”

I clenched my hands and let out a sigh. Sophia really has a way of ruining my morning. If this is her way of avenging the funds that I realigned to build schools, then she will be sorry for even including a child in our fight.

“Where is she? Take me where she is now!”

“Yes, ambassadress.”

The maid took me to Sophia’s room where the sound of a child's wailing was coming from.

I ran to the door and pushed it open and the sight I witnessed is something that greatly reminded me of the painful past I experienced in her hands.

Ana is on the floor crying for mercy while a maid is whipping the poor child. Her back is bleeding already from the injuries while Sophia is sitting prettily on her chair being fed an apple by her nanny.

“I told you to curse that bitch Alana in front of me but you did not listen. Now look at what is happening to you. You are just like her, a lowly mutt! Did you know that I used to beat her too?” She laughed after saying that and opened her mouth wide for another slice of apple. “I missed seeing her in pain badly.

“Stop that, I command you!” My voice thundered across the wall, shocking everyone in the room.

I glared at the maid who held the whip and was ready to strike Ana again.

“If you do not stop hurting the child, I swear I will kill you myself!”

It’s not just a threat. It’s something that I will do. I can feel my blood boiling inside me. How can they do to this child the very same thing that they did to me?!

No one should experience what kind of hell I went through in their hands!

“I said stop it!” I growled as I felt my muscles bulging. Something inside me wants to come out. I only saw nothing but red. It felt like I was a ticking bomb that could explode anytime.

The maid swallowed the lump in her throat and stopped whipping Ana.

“Do not listen to her!” Sophia shouted and stood up in front of me. “How dare you command my people when I am their leader?! And what the hell are you doing here?! Did I call for you? Did I ask for you to be here?!”

She turned to the guards at the door. “Take this woman out of my room now!”

But before the guards could move, Lucas took out his gun and aimed it at the head of the guards. “Make a move and I will bury every single bullet I have in this gun into your head.”

The guard took a step back while Sophia trembled in annoyance.

“All of you! Leave all of you!” She ordered the guards out of the room.

Lucas looked at me in worry but I only nodded at him meaning that I could handle the situation. He nodded and left, closing the door behind us.

Sophia’s maid ran to his mistress' side while I came up to Ana and covered her with my coat. My tears fell as I saw how her back was damaged just like me back then.

They also whipped me like this, like I am some kind of a beast to them.

“Alana…” Ana sobbed in my arms when I hugged her.

“Shh, it’s okay. You are safe now and I will let anyone do this to you again. I will make sure they will pay for doing this to you!”

I saw my child self in her. I saw the helpless me in her face who can only cry as Sophia would hit me using the same whip my father used to beat me.

“Please ambassadress, do not do this. You will only be in danger. Please, no. I’m okay. I am very much okay, ambassadress.”

She tried to stand up but she lost balance because of the wounds in her back which only made my heart bleed in both pity for her and rage against Sophia.

I cupped her face with my trembling hands. “Stay here how an ambassadress will protect you, Ana.”

I stood up to face Sophia who is acting like nothing has happened. She continued eating her food while her maids even cheered for her.

“So here you are again, Alana. The self-confessed savior of the weak. Do you know how you looked so pathetic now?”

She grinned at me and took the small knife from her nanny to point it at me. “Did you still remember how you begged for me to stop hitting you? Gosh, that memory is still fresh in my mind. You looked so bad down there in your cute little prison while you begged me for some scraps, you know. You are even more than willing to get slapped by me so I could give you a piece of stale bread.”

I closed my eyes and let my tears fall. It’s not tears for being hopeless. It’s the tears for the years that I have become so weak and defenseless. I am wishing them all goodbye.

“You are going to regret it, Sophia. This very moment will keep you awake every night wishing that you did not prey on the weak and the helpless because I will show you how we always get even.”

“Why?” She came up to me with crossed arms, her eyes laughing at me from ear to ear. “Are you going to hide behind the alpha prince again? Are you going to beg him to do this and that against us, your family? In case you don’t know, the alpha prince has already left the village this morning. Didn’t he tell you, Alana? I thought you are close with him or maybe it is just you who thinks that you are a friend with William?”

I can feel my whole body vibrating with fury. This ugly tongue of hers should not have a chance to utter the name of the alpha prince again. “No, no need to call the attention of the alpha prince. I will deal with you myself, Sophia. You don’t deserve to be with anyone in this world right now.”

I stole the whip from her hand and struck her face violently, the sound of the whip slices through the air, snapping violently against the sensitive skin of her face.
