My eyes widened in shock when I saw the ruthless alpha prince that is feared by everyone outside and inside the palace shed his tears right in front of me.

“Alpha prince!” I exclaimed when I didn’t know what to do. “Alpha prince, what are you doing? I didn’t mean to say those words. I was not thinking. I am taking them all back.”

How could I ever properly think of doing or saying something when he is slowly going into his knees while his tears keep pouring?

“You are right. I lost her because of my cowardice,” he said in a shaking voice while staring at me. “I lost my woman because I was not decisive enough. I promised to protect her when I rescued her from that godforsaken place but her life did not get any better in my hands. She suffered while being with me. She suffered because of me because she will always choose to protect me over herself.”

He gasped and reached for my feet to touch it gently.

“I saw how hard she struggled so we could be together but it’s already too late. I was not able to save her. I let her slip from my hand right in front of me!”

I can feel the anguish in his voice when he said those words that I can’t help but feel the tears in my eyes too.

Without me knowing, my tears started streaming down my face.

I don’t have any idea why I am like this. All I know is that I am in so much pain seeing him like this as if it’s the biggest crime to hurt him like this.

“Alpha prince…” My voice broke off when he did the unthinkable as a royal werewolf.

He placed a kiss on my feet and hugged it gently.

Gasping in shock, I can only look around to make sure no one is peeping on us. How could he do this to me?! I am just his whore but why is he treating me like his equal?

He looked up at me and smiled. “The moon goddess gave me another chance to have you back in my life. I am not going to mess it up this time. I could abdicate the position in an instant if that would make me have you again, my love.”

He really thinks I am her, I thought in my head.

“Alpha prince,” I said and knelt too so we could see each other at the same eye level, “If you think that I am Alana then go ahead. Think of her as me. Do whatever you want with me while thinking about her. That’s fine with me. Go ahead.”

“Oh,” that’s all he could say when he pulled me into his arms and kissed my head. “But you are her, Aria. Alana… Aria… you are her.”

“I am a lycan, alpha prince. There is no way that I am the mate you are talking about. Maybe I just looked like her but we both know that I am not her but you can always think of me as her. I won’t mind. I am here for that.”

“No,” he said as he cupped my face. “You are Alana. I thought that I lost you to death when you fell into a cliff but it turned out that Zuleik must have orchestrated it all along.”

I blinked my eyes when he mentioned the name of the lycan prince. Did he already know that he is my mate?

He must have seen the chaos in my eyes because he simply nodded confirming my suspicions.

“Yes, yes I know that Zuleik is the mate that you have been talking about. From the moment that I remembered everything, I knew that he was behind all this.”

My face blazed against his gaze as I stood up to get away from him. So, he knew all along but he just acted like he didn’t for reasons that are hard to understand.

“You knew that I am a lycan but still took me to the palace. And now, I will hear from you that you also knew that the lycan prince is my mate. Alpha prince, how could you let yourself be trampled like this?!” I said in a bit of a higher tone. “How could you be so calm like this? You even cried in front of the mate of your enemy! Don’t you have any pride? You are the alpha prince! You can have any woman you like but why are you so hung up with a dead woman?”

“Alana…” He reached for my face and looked at me in the most tender way that I had the urge to tear up again. “You are mine and I am yours. I will love no woman in my lifetime other than you.”

His finger went down into my neck and touched the part where Zuleik claimed me as his mate.

“There used to be a mark here from me but it slowly disappeared,” he muttered in the softest voice and kissed my neck. “I used to smell you here and kissed you senselessly until you begged me to take you in.”

I clenched my hands in my sides and bit my lower lip at the sensation he’s making me feel.

Angling my neck to give him better access, I spoke the words that have been running in my mind for so long. “If I am really Alana then you should mark me.”

I offered him my neck. “Please, mark me as your own, alpha prince.”

The mark of the mate can be overpowered by another mate depending upon the intensity and connection a lycan can have with another male.

I always saw that happen in my village. If I am the woman he’s talking about, then he can easily do that to me and I would be free from Zuleik finally.

But the joy I am expecting to see in his eyes did not happen. Instead, I saw sadness and fear in them.

“We are karmic mates. We love each other. We yearn for each other.”

“But?” I asked in anticipation when he did not finish his sentence.

“But we also naturally reject each other as mates. That’s the curse between us, Alana.”
