I burst into laughter when he said that. That is actually the most absurd thing I have ever heard in my entire life and it’s the first time I heard about it.

“Mates rejecting each other? Alpha prince, are you high on something? How can you be a mate to someone and reject her? You are just making me laugh with your useless lame jokes. Stop it. No one would believe you.”

I turned my back ready to leave him in the cabin when he spoke again.

“Alana, you and I are karmic mates because you are the granddaughter of the former alpha king that my father slayed.”

I blinked and turned back around to see the guilt written all over his face.

“What the hell are you talking about, alpha prince? What is this again? Why are you like this? Why are you inventing impossible things like that?”

He remained in his place, his eyes fixed on mine as fear and determination crossed his eyes.

“I regretted not telling you sooner because I am scared of the repercussions. I am afraid that the truth will take you from me. I am afraid that you’ll slowly drift away from me if you learn about your clan.”

He bowed his head and took a long sigh. “That is why I cannot just mark you because I don’t want you to go through that same pain again. We were born from the two great enemies. Our blood naturally repels each other. The lycan blood in you exacerbated our incompatibility. I found that out after I marked you and I could only blame no one but myself.”

I know what he’s talking about. I’ve read it all in the books about the current alpha king killing the former with his bare hands.

“Then you should have stayed that way forever,” I spoke and shrugged. “You should have just let things stay that way. If I am really Alana and I learned that your family is the one who butchered my entire family, then there is no way that I could be with you. I would never forgive you and your family, alpha prince.”

He gulped and nodded. “I know that is why I hid it from you because I cannot stand the thought of losing you.”

He walked up to me but stopped in his tracks just a few meters from me when he saw the warning on my face.

“I want to repeat it to you again and again. You are my Alana. You are my mate. I’m sorry that it only took me now to finally remember you.”

He extended his hand towards me and moved his fingers gently. “Can I ask if I can protect you again? Please, Alana?”

The sides of my eyes heated for unknown reasons so I hid it by laughing and brushing off the strand from my face.

I faced the alpha prince squarely and did not let his soft eyes waver me.

“If you are telling the truth and that I am really Alana, then tell me why can’t I remember you? Why are you the only one who remembered it all and not me? Is it because I don’t want to remember you at all, alpha prince? Have you taken that into consideration?”

He fell silent taking into account what I just said so I continued.

“Don’t you think it’s the moon goddess way of saying that you and I are not meant to be with each other?” I let out a sigh. “I should just leave now because I don’t think I could ever do what I came here for.”

But he chased after me and hugged me from the back and buried his face into my neck.

“Don’t go, Alana. Please. I can’t let you just leave me again.” His arms tightened around my waist. “I love you, Alana.”

I fought against my feelings and did my might to push him away and fished out the vial of poison in my pocket to show it to him.

“See this? See this? It’s a poison. I intentionally came into the brothel to be given to you with a plan in my mind to kill you because of what you did to my village! I am a lycan, alpha prince! I am not Alana, your mate! I am just someone who would gladly kill you to avenge what you did to my people!”

But instead of seeing wrath in his eyes, there was only understanding in them and that’s what I abhorred the most because why can’t he be angry at me? Why can’t he hate me?!

He snatched the vial from me, opened the lid of the vial and gave it back to me. “Can you do it? Can you pour it all in my mouth? Can you really kill me, Alana?” he challenged me.

Our eyes fought against each other and no one dared to look down. In the end, I put my arm down letting the liquid spill onto the floor.

“Don’t come for me. Please.”

I ran into the forests and transformed into my animal and howled deep into the woods as I chased through the shadows of the trees.

I could believe the alpha prince if I want to but this seemed to be all impossible. And if what he said is true about our families, then the more reasons that I should get away from him.

“I don’t really know what to think and believe anymore,” I murmured to myself when I transformed back into my human form beside the cliff overlooking the whole state. “Coming here to the palace must be the worst decision I have ever made.”

Sighing, I decided to go back but I was frozen in my feet when I sensed a familiar presence behind me.

“At last, I found you,” the voice in my back spoke as the neck on my hair stood up.

“I have been searching for you everywhere, Aria.”

I turned my back around and gasped silently when I saw Zuleik dragging his shovel on the ground towards me.
