ALANA

“Alana! Alana!” I heard Lucas frantically calling my name in the entrance of the forest.

I checked the device he gave me and it is still not working.

I left Sophia and followed the trail back into the backyard of the mansion. I don’t really know what she’s planning to do with me there but the moment I tasted the cake, I knew something was wrong already.

Is she going to kill me there? I don’t know. All I know is she is really plotting something against me. Her, my stepmother and I guess my father too. That last thought brought back my tears again.

“Alana! Alana!” Lucas called me again.

“Yes, I am here!”

Lifting my long skirt to jump over the big log, I wiped my whole face and pretended like everything was alright.

“Lucas, I am here and I am okay,” I said when he spotted me gasping for breath, concern was all over his face.

“Alana!”

He ran to me and to my utter shock, pulled me into his arms and hugged me tightly. “Thank god you are safe! I thought something had happened to you already!”

I blinked countless times because of what he did. I don’t know how to react because no other man has hugged me other than William. It felt weird and all I want is to be free from him.

I felt Lucas’ body froze before he stepped back hastily. “I… I’m sorry. I…”

I eyed him curiously. “Why did you hug me, Lucas?”

He looked so distraught that I wonder why he is acting like this. William is also like this to me. I can understand him because he is my mate but Lucas? He is William’s beta and his best friend.

Does his loyalty to the alpha prince also extend to me?

“I am sorry. It’s just that I am so worried about you.”

A whiff of the air rendered me deaf into his words when I caught the familiar scent. I sniffed the place and my eyes widened.

“William is here!” I said in both disbelief and excitement. “Lucas, William is here!”

I ran back to the mansion as fast as possible. William is here! My mate is here! I can’t believe he really came here. What is he doing here? Is he here for me? Is he going to ask me to come back with him? If he asks me again then I am afraid I will say yes this time.

“Ambassadress, please be careful! Watch out! You are going to trip!” Lucas warned me but I was too excited to see William that I did not notice the rock on the ground.

I fell flat on the ground with my knees directly scratching with the sharp rock.

“Alana!”

Lucas was quick to help me stand up.

“You are bleeding!”

I just laughed it off seeing the small blood trickling down my leg from a deep wound on my knee. “It’s nothing. I have to see William now.”

Limping on one foot, I still tried my very best to run while smiling like crazy. I cannot wait to see him, to hug him, and to kiss him the instant I will be alone with him in the room. I completely forgot what happened to me today because of the thought that I would see William again.

“Alana, please!” Lucas caught up with me before I could take the stairs to the second floor where I could sense William. “Let’s treat your wound first.”

“No need, Lucas. William is here now. I want to see him now. I have to see him now. I am sure he wanted to see me too.”

I pulled my arm from him but he did not let me go and instead stared at me intently.

“How are you sure that he is really here for you? How sure are you that he will be happy to see you too?”

Blood drained from my face and all the excitement I felt flew out of the window. I forgot again what I did to him.

I left him. I did not listen to him when he asked me to stay.

Lucas drew out a breath and knelt before me to check my knee. “Let me treat this first, please Alana.”

He raised his hand towards me but before he could touch my knee, I stepped back while holding back my tears.

“It’s okay even if he is not happy to see me or if I am not the reason why he has come here. All I wanted was to take a glimpse of my mate, Lucas.”

I did not wait for his reply and climbed the stairs to get to the room where his fresh smell is the strongest.

I finally reached the door where I am sure William is staying.

Catching my breath, I smiled at the royal guard who was guarding the door. He looked like he was holding his laughter seeing my wild hair scattered across my face.

“Hi, good day. I am here to see the alpha prince. I… I am Alana. Please tell him I am Alana and I am here to see him and maybe talk to him if he is not busy.”

The royal guard bowed at me. “Yes, Ms. Alana.”

He knocked on the door and opened it for a bit and I can’t help but peep at the small space but all I see is William’s back while he is holding a glass of wine in his hand.

He is drinking at this hour? But why?

“Alpha prince, the ambassadress is here and she wants to talk to you.”

“Tell her I am busy,” he answered briefly.

I felt my heart sink into the deepest part of my gut. Hearing his rejection in front of my face just hurts differently.

I felt weak and too exposed and vulnerable as I stood there with a flushed face and torn heart.

The royal guard looked at me apologetically after closing the door.

“I am sorry, Ms. Alana. The alpha prince must have been tired and exhausted from driving the plane here by himself. He needs to rest now. Maybe you can come back later for dinner.”

I forced myself to smile at him even when my heart was breaking. “You are right. He must have been exhausted. How rude for me to come here and disturb him. Please tell him I will come back later.”

I turned my back to him and ran to my room on the third floor. The second I am inside, I let myself burst into tears as I clutched my chest.

He heard it. He definitely did.
