ALANA

“Cain, take your hands off the ambassadress!”

Lucas’ angry voice thundered across the room as I felt my dizziness going away knowing that Cain knew what William wanted to hide in the first place. I blinked my eyes to drive the shaky feeling and to focus my eyes on the two eager men in front of me.

Lucas pushed Cain away and looked at me protectively. 

“Hey Lucas, no need to be harsh. I was just talking with Alana.”

I saw Lucas hide me behind his back like what William always does for me. “You are harassing her already! I’m not going to let that happen. She is the ambassadress!”

Cain grinned at the beta. “Really, Lucas? Is Alana really just an ambassadress?”

His voice holds a lot of meaning in it and I could only surmise about what it is. Pulling up my neckline to hide the mark on my neck, I silently blamed myself. If I was only careful enough, then he would not know about William’s secret.

“You are talking nonsense, Cain,” Lucas replied in a flat tone. “The alpha prince has not met his mate yet.”

Cain chuckled. “You might be a good liar Lucas but I know what I saw. No need to further hide it from us. I know the truth.”

He glanced at me and I could only bow my head and bit my lip so as not to cry. I just know that I put William in a tough spot again.

My mate has his reasons for hiding me in the world. I trusted him on that but now, I just blew it on against him.

“You will be the jinx to the alpha prince!” I remembered my father saying that to me.

Only when I began my education did I know the meaning of the jinx and I think I am fully living up to its meaning. I am bad luck to the alpha prince since all the negative things happened to him when he found me.

“Can’t you see that you are already agitating the ambassadress?!” Lucas growled at Cain. “Leave now, Cain! You brought nothing to this world but trouble!”

“You don’t have to be so harsh on me, Lucas. I will leave.” He looked in my direction and uttered in a soft low voice, “My apologies if I scare you, ambassadress. I did not mean it.”

I just nodded and did not bother replying.

After Cain left the room, Lucas quickly came to my side and gently wiped my tears away.

“I’m sorry Alana but I can’t find the alpha prince. He must have been doing something important. You know his job. Even when he is not in the palace, his role doesn’t change.”

I shook my head and covered my whole face with my hands. “I perfectly understand, Lucas. I should not have asked for him. I know he is such a busy man. I should have fended off for myself.”

“No, don’t say that, Alana.” He cupped my face so I would be able to look into his eyes. “You know you are the priority of the alpha prince. William would do anything for you.”

My eyes watered more knowing that it’s the truth. “That’s the reason why I want to be strong. I don’t want to always be under his protection because I know he will always be hurt and in danger because of me.”

I clutched my chest when I felt my shy wolf getting riled up in sadness for a reason. If the visions in my head are true, then I am a really dangerous person for William. I will only bring nothing but bad luck to him.

“He saved me… he did everything for me but what did I do for him? Nothing, Lucas. I am just a heavy excess baggage that he always carries everywhere he goes. I did contribute nothing to William.”

My voice broke as I sobbed loudly in my hands. Now that Cain knows William’s secret, I am sure it will be used against him.

He will be humiliated knowing that his mate is me, the unwanted one in her own family.

The door opened and William came running towards me. “Alana!”

He embraced me tightly into his arms and kissed my head. “Lucas, what happened?”

I stared at the beta’s face pleading that he won’t tell the alpha prince.

“Alpha prince, the ambassadress just felt a bit weak and dizzy.”

I sighed and mouthed a  thank you towards him.

William surveyed me, his face lined with so much concern. “Call the doctor now. I will get her thoroughly checked.”

“Yes, alpha prince.”

He caressed my face and leaned in to give me a kiss on my lips. “You will be okay. Where does it hurt?”

He checked on my head, behind my neck, and then back to my face. “Tell me, Alana. Where does it hurt?”

I closed my eyes and hugged him tight to hide the tears falling from my eyes.

“William, I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry.”

His whole body froze. “What are you talking about? You did nothing wrong, Alana. It’s me who should say sorry because I wasn’t there when you needed me the most.”

I don’t want you to get hurt, William, I whispered in my head silently.

I don’t want you to be hurt by me. Those things in my head are terrifying. I think it’s a good thing that you are keeping my identity as your mate to the world.

“Come,” he said and carried me into his arms. “I’ll take you to the doctor. Fuck, he must be too slow!”

But the results from the test came out to be good. I am perfectly healthy and the scars from my years of being abused are healing quickly.

“Why are you avoiding me?” Cain spoke when I just passed by him in the hallway to my office the next morning.

I stopped but did not turn to look at him.

“Is it because I learned that you are the alpha prince’s mate?” he said and stepped back towards me. “Are you afraid that I would tell the alpha king that the alpha prince has been keeping a secret the fact that he already met his mate?”

I sighed and shook my head at him. “No, I am not his mate. The alpha prince has not met his mate yet, Cain.”

“But why can’t you look into my eyes? You are not a good liar, Alana.”

I forced myself to look into his eyes and repeated what I said to him. “I… I am not William’s mate, Cain. He just treats me like I am his good friend.”

“Who said that you are just my good friend, Alana?”

I gasped as we both turned at my back to see William standing there, his hands on his pockets and his eyes blazing hot while he’s strutting towards me.

“William…”

He grabbed my hand and intertwined our fingers together and shot Cain a look.

“You are right. Alana is my mate and I tried to hide that fact from the world even though I wanted to shout in pride knowing that I have found my other half. Now that you know the truth Cain, would you mind telling me too the real reason why you are here? I doubt that you are obeying the alpha king wholeheartedly.”

I blinked and looked at the way William has put a crack on the perfect mask of Cain. His cousin looked a bit distressed, which is the first time that I saw him act like this. For the past few days, Cain seemed to be a very bubbly and carefree man committed to becoming my friend.

“Who in the whole state could disobey the order of the alpha king, William? I am just one of his loyal followers, and I care for you as your cousin. I came here to help Alana with her mission so he would not trouble you anymore.”

I looked down in shame when I heard that. He is right. I am just a trouble for the alpha prince but the way William’s hand tightened his grip with my hand says otherwise.

“Who said Alana is just a trouble for me? She is my mate and my luna, the future queen luna of the entire state. I will stop everything I am doing for her. I will go to the ends of the world just for her.”

William paused for a while before putting up a creepy grin on his face. “And I would kill anyone, even when he is my cousin, if I think that he poses a threat to my mate.”
