ALANA

My heart swelled with so much happiness with how much I am hearing pride in his voice. It felt like William had given me the key to his life. He trusted me that much.

I smiled at him before squeezing his hand grasping mine. All of my fears and doubts before the alpha king are gone now as long as my alpha prince is here by my side.

“Alpha king, can I ask why you called for me? Please, I want to know,” I said, finding my voice firm and whole.

William just boosts my energy all the time.

The alpha king leaned back on his throne as he asked for a piece of paper from one of his men at the back.

William and I looked at each other with our eyes reflecting our determination to stay together no matter what.

“A lycan pack attacked my garrison last night. They’re telling me someone from the inside is leaking it.” He stared at me intently. “You are a lycan, Aria. You are not just an ordinary lycan. You are a former mate of the lycan prince, Zuleik.”

I gasped deep inside as tremors of danger spread throughout my body. How did the alpha king know about this easily? I know nothing could be possible hidden from his omnipotent eyes but I was just shocked that he made a move this late knowing that Zuleik and I have mate ties.

William put a hand around my shoulder protectively. “Father, if there is anyone you should call for to explain everything, then that should be me. Aria has nothing to do with it. The garrison is under my protection. I have already sent a report to you. All of the men are caught and I am trying all of them to speak out about the traitor inside the palace.”

The alpha king must have not liked William interrupting him because his scowl was more evident on his face this time.

“No need, William. I have already done the job that you should have done as swift as possible instead of playing house things with this lycan.”

His eyes got back on me. “You are the former lycan prince mate. I hate lycans. They cannot be trusted!”

Clenching my hands, I took a long sigh knowing that he was the one who should not be trusted. I read my history. He crept into my grandfather’s loyal advisors and wore himself a sheep’s clothing only to reveal himself later on to be a traitor and killed my whole family so he could take over being the alpha king.

“Father, lycans are your best allies before, do you remember?” William said before I could utter a single word. “I read the books. I know my history. I know how you advocated for their loyalty towards you. I do not approve of their ways now but once upon a time, you trusted all of them with your life. Aria was a former mate to the lycan prince as you are a former ally to the lycans. You cannot be a traitor to your people now in the same way that Aria’s loyalty lies to her new man. And that new man is me.”

I gulped when my eyes hurt from keeping the tears. Hearing William say this in front of his own father, the alpha king, does something to me.

We may not be able to defend our love before the alpha king before but we are going to today, tomorrow, and in the coming decades to come.

The alpha king stood up from his throne, eyes reflecting disappointment for his only son.

“And the alpha prince, my son, and a future alpha king is now eagerly protecting a lycan before me! What should I make out of it? How can I expect you to be a good alpha king to your people, the one that prioritizes and protects your kind when you have a lycan woman beside you?!”

William only smiled at his father. “You should be proud of me, father. My eyes and mind now are more open. I see both worlds so I could govern better. I could lead better. Aria made me this way. I am a better man now because of her. Isn’t this what you wanted in the first place? For your cruel son to change back into his wise and fair years?”

The alpha king fell silent and we both took it as a good sign. William gripped my hand as we bowed before his father.

“We should leave now. Please call for us again if you have more questions.”

I can’t help but put a wide smile on my face when he carried me into his arms and walked away from the hallway wearing that victorious smile on his face.

ALPHA KING

The pair had already left the hallway a few minutes ago but I am still standing in the same place looking at the closed door.

“Alpha king, that is clearly Alana. She was not dead all along and it seemed like the alpha prince remembered her fully,” one of my advisors spoke up after William and Aria left the hallway.

My brows moved as I went back to my seat. “I know, Gary. I know. From my son’s eyes, I can already say who she is.”

I do not exactly know if William remembered her or she even knew about him but the connection I felt between them even without the mate bond is overwhelmingly confusing.

It’s the first time that I saw something like this.

“Alpha king, you must approach this with caution. Alana is dangerous. She can reverse all your hard work in an instant. She should not be allowed to be with the alpha prince any longer!”

I stared emptily into the man who bowed his head in reverence and slipped back into his place in the back, his shadow of wolf remaining in my presence.

“I’m deeply sorry, alpha king.”

He knew he had crossed the line which I never allow to happen.

“The woman grew guts this time,” I said silently. “Experience taught her well. But still, they should never be together because they will be a disaster waiting to happen.”
