ALANA

We followed the trail deep into the forest with Sophia on the front while I was at her back beaming with happiness looking at the cake in my hand.

She is busy talking on the phone with someone while I am enjoying the sight before us. This really reminds me of the forest in the capital that I need to cross every time I have to go to the cabin house that William built for me.

“Sophia? Are we still far? You looked exhausted already. Should we stop for a while to rest?” I asked her when a good half hour had passed and we were still walking without seeing any clearing.

“What? No, I am good. Are you hungry? Eat the cake. I baked that for you.”

I smiled and stared at the strawberry frosting of the cake. It looked so appetizing.

“Okay. I bet it tastes great,” I said and took a bite.

It’s too sweet. It reminds me of the taste of the stale bread that Minerva used to throw at me in the cellar.

Sophia laughed and patted my head. “Very good. Now eat some more. Better yet, you could stuff it all in your mouth.”

She went back to whoever she’s talking to on the phone and cursed. “Where the hell are you?! We’re here already.”

She looked at me and smiled before stepping a few meters so I would not hear her conversation with the person on the line.

I continued eating the cake until she came back for me in a sour mood.

“Come on, Alana. We are almost there.”

I just shrugged and followed her. “I think you’re hungry too. The cake tastes wonderful, Sophia. Come. Take a bite too.”

I took a big chunk of the cake and offered it to her but her eyes widened in fear and slapped my hand away in a reflex action.

“No! Why are you giving me that crap?!”

My smile disappeared and I swallowed the food in my mouth. “Why do you look so scared with your cake that you baked? Because it’s poisoned?”

Sophia froze on her feet as she surveyed me with a wondering look. “How did you know?”

I threw the rest of the cake on the ground. “Sophia, do you think you can fool me like this? This is the same poison your mother used to give me every day so my body must have developed a resistance to it.”

Back at the castle, one of my doctors performed a resistance test on me and she found out that my body has been exposed to a number of them.

I remembered the sweet taste and it stuck in my mind forever and I never thought I would have tasted it again now.

Sophia rolled her eyes, completely dropping the mask she passionately wore back at the mansion. “And so? The poison did not get you but the men mom hired to take you back to your prison will end you! Your time of acting like a boss here in the pack is over! You are so over, Alana!”

“You don’t really mean everything you said back then, right?” I whispered as my eyes began watering. I think I am still the naïve girl at heart. Deep inside me, I am still yearning to be accepted and loved by my family despite what they did to me. “You don’t really mean it when you said sorry to me earlier, right? You… you just did that to trick me.”

Sophia just laughed and took her phone and began calling someone.

I clenched my fists seeing how she ignored me. “There is really no picnic, right? Mom and dad are not really there waiting for me, right?”

“Will you shut your fucking mouth?!” She glared at me. “Why won’t you pick up?! Shit, answer the damn phone!”

I looked at the tracker device Lucas gave me. It’s not functioning meaning there is an interruption in the signal which I believed to be caused by them.

“And that cake,” I continued, smiling bitterly. “You did not really give it to me because you wanted me to taste it. You gave that to me to kill me, you bitch!”

Sophia gasped in disbelief hearing the word coming out from me. “What did you say?! How dare you say that to me when you are just nothing but a mere pet of the alpha prince?! Without William pitying you, you are just nothing! You will always be the same woman he literally picked from the dirt whom he made into a human!”

Her eyes turned red as her bones began cracking and muscles stretched in unnatural ways. Sophia is transforming into a wolf!

“Do you think William will like you back?” She pulled my hair and slammed me into a tree rattling the birds nesting on top. “Are you one of those delusional girls who are dreaming of a life with the alpha prince? Alana, wake the fuck up! You are just nothing to him! Men are fascinated with rescuing girls they pity and you Alana is just another charity case for William.”

My tears fell because every word she said is the truth. Without William, I am nothing. I am nothing so how dare I covet the alpha prince?!

Sophia grinned seeing my miserable state. “You will never know that because you did not ever experience being pursued by anyone in your life. Do you know why? You are despicable.  You are very unlovable. You are ugly and your body is full of scars! You are not worthy to be loved, Alana! Even your own father cannot love you so how dare you think that a stranger as high as the alpha prince will be able to?!”

My hands began shaking. “Shut up.”

“Why? Are you not happy to hear the truth? Do you want to keep on deluding yourself that he will like you?!”

“I said shut up!” My voice echoed across the forest as I pulled her grip away from my hair and threw her to the ground. In a fit of rage, I struck her so hard on the face with a rock that her lower lip burst.

Squeezing her chin, I stared right into her frightened eyes. “I don’t need the alpha prince to protect me. I can do that on my own, Sophia. I can easily stand on my own without William by my side.”

Harvesting a handful of cake on the ground, I shove it into her mouth until she has no choice but to swallow it all.

“That would be the first poison you will be getting from me. And let me warn you, there will be more to come. Don’t worry. You will not die easily,” I said before walking away.

Crying, I heard her force herself to vomit while cursing my name.

“Fuck you, Alana. Fuck you, you ungrateful bitch!”

Blinded by my tears, I gasped for air when the guilt set in. “I’m so sorry, William. I swear, I didn't mean to say that at all.”
