ALANA

I swallowed the lump in my throat when I realized what the alpha king was trying to tell.

“Alana, you decide what you want to happen to him. We lost our son. The palace lost the next alpha king and that is our fault.”

The alpha king took a long breath before staring hard at me. “Even before William told me, I already knew you were his mate and I knew your ancestry even before but you and my son could not happen. You and him should be spared from the pain of being with each other. It is not fair that you will both suffer from the sins of the past.”

The queen luna caressed my back when my tears began falling. I had a hunch on it before but I did not let it dwell in my head because how can the alpha king let the grandchild of his enemy roam freely in the palace whilst not killing her?

“And so, I decided based on what should be done but I failed to see the part where you both will fight for your love until the end.”

The alpha king’s eyes began to turn red because of tears but he did not try to hide it from us. For the first time since I knew him, I saw this vulnerable.

He presented Lucas before me.

“It is my fault that my son is gone but Alana, it is not your fault that your mate is dead. It is never your intention to endanger William. You just fought for your feelings and connection. That is why I am giving you the right to decide what is going to happen to Lucas. He is the beta of your mate, the one who should protect him, but he is the one who betrayed him. He stabbed William on his back. That is a crime that deserves dismemberment. Would you do that to him?”

The whole hallway was silent waiting for my decision.

Dismemberment… the highest and cruelest form of punishment known to the palace. Lucas definitely deserves that but I don’t want him to be dead from that.

I want his death to last a few years. I want him to have long agonizing pain of slow emotional torment just like what I would be feeling for the rest of my life.

What he gave me is a pain that even a lifetime could not even heal.

Staring at Lucas, I recalled the times when he helped and when I thought that those actions were genuine but only now do I realize that it was just his way of deceiving me and the alpha prince.

With a firm decision in my head, I looked up at the alpha king to inform him.

“I will not want dismemberment as his form of punishment, alpha king.”

The look of relief on Lucas’ eyes is beyond recognizable which angered me more. I cannot see any regret in his eyes as if he is still justifying all of his actions to be right.

The alpha king stared at me knowing that I will not just stop there.

“But alpha king, I will ask for another form of punishment,” I glanced at Lucas on the floor, “something that will make him wish for death instead.”

“What is it, Alana? Tell me.”

“Alpha king, I want his wolf dead,” I whispered.

He blinked as if it’s the first time he heard of it.

“What do you want me to do with him again, Alana?” he asked again just to make sure.

With eyes flying with ember flashes, I spoke with a firmer voice. “I said I want his wolf dead. I want the wolf of the beta to the alpha prince, killed inside him. I want him to be human, alpha king. I want him to feel so vulnerable and lost that he will regret what he has done for the rest of his life. I want to take the most important of his identity just like he took William from me!”

My tears continued falling but my voice did not falter. I know what I want. I know what I want to happen with him.

“What else, Alana?” the alpha king asked again. “What do you want me to do with him after?”

“No!” Lucas yelled while squirming in his chains, horrified by what he had just heard from me. “I’d rather die than let my wolf be killed!”

He looked at the alpha king and began crying like a kid. “Please, alpha king! Just kill me now! Kill me now, please!”

But the alpha king only coldly stared at him. “The decision does not lie in my hands anymore, Lucas. Alana wanted your wolf killed so your wolf will be killed.”

The alpha king nodded at one of the soldiers who took his sword from his sheath filled with a potion and stabbed it right into the beta’s chest.

A loud wail was heard in the hall and a wolf’s cry reverberated for the last time.

The alphas, soldiers, Minerva, and Sophia gasped at the ugly sight witnessing for the first time such cruelty. Killing the wolf inside a werewolf is like killing your own soul.

While they cried, I just looked at Lucas hugging himself crying and was on the verge of insanity with my eyes empty.

“Alpha king, can I request for one thing?”

The alpha king nodded at me. “Anything, Alana.”

I pointed at the mother and daughter hugging each other. “I want Sophia and Minerva separated from each other.”

“No! Mommy, I cannot survive without her!” Sophia shook her head while crying her eyes out. “Please, Alana. Do not do this to us! I will keep my mother with me! Who will cook me food? Who will hug me to sleep if you are going to take her away from me?”

But my heart is already as hard as rock. I cannot afford to be kind or to pity them. I am already spent. I am all used up. I cannot feel any emotions but emptiness.

“That is not my problem anymore, Sophia,” I said coldly.

“You heard Alana,” the alpha king said. “Obey her!”
