ALANA

“I am done!” Georgia shouted and ran to the doctor carrying a petri dish in her hand. “This is the blood of the alpha prince.”

The doctor inspected it and nodded. “Passed!”

Georgia smiled widely and turned to me with a mocking smile on her face. “It’s so easy. I don’t know why the mate of the alpha prince is having a hard time. Does it mean that she’s really incompatible with the alpha prince?” she said before running to the other station.

I just did not pay attention to her because I am too drawn into the fact that all I am smelling in these dishes is Lucas’ blood.

“I am done!” Sophia shouted by my side.

“Passed!” the announcer declared as my sweat broke out from my forehead because I still cannot pinpoint the basin that holds William’s blood.

I feel so useless feeling this way because why the hell I cannot recognize my own mate’s blood? Despite the medicine, I should have at least sensed it because William and I are always together.

I should have at least developed some sense of automatic connection with him at the deepest level without relying much on our bond connection.

“You must have been joking, Alana.” Sophia laughed at me when she walked past me. “Really? His own mate cannot recognize her own mate’s blood? You are a joke, Alana. You really are!”

I clenched my hands and concentrated hard to use my sense of smell more extensively. This time, I decided to trust myself.

Walking towards the doctor empty handed, I confidently looked at his eyes.

“Where is your chosen dish, Ms. Alana?”

“There is none,” I answered with my head held high. “None in that dish is my mate’s blood. I don’t know who did this but I am telling you, putting the blood of the alpha prince’s beta on those dishes is not really a smart move because you just made it all easy for me.”

I saw how Lucas’ face grimaced from my peripheral vision but I could only care less.

The head doctor, seemingly impressed by my answer, smiled at me. “You are right, Ms. Alana. There is no petri dish that contains the alpha prince’s blood. Passed!”

Keeping the smile to myself, I ran quickly to the other station where the next task would be to draw the whole anatomy of William.

Since drawing and painting are my forte, I easily finished it and was the first to proceed to the next and last station of the task where the announcer faced us again but without the queen luna this time.

“Now that you all have the blood dishes in your hand, you have to navigate it to get out of the trail. You have to use the blood of the alpha prince as your compass. This challenge is the challenge of your possible connection with the alpha prince so you will have to establish that connection with the blood of the alpha prince. Remember that the first one to finish the race would be the winner.”

Sophia and Georgia licked the petri dishes and went on their way while I just stood there with my head empty.

How could I possibly finish the race when I don’t have William’s blood in me?

“Doctor, how can I be able to do this when my table did not contain any of William’s blood?” I asked, worried that they would outrun me.

“Ms. Alana, you are just unlucky that those were put on your table randomly. Please, do not take this as an attack against you since you have an obvious advantage against the other girls right from the very start.”

I sighed and forced myself to not invest my time arguing with him when it’s obvious that he preferred the other two more than me.

“Yes, I think so too.”

I crouched down to pick up the petri dishes left by the two girls and licked clean the alpha prince’s blood on it to the shock of everyone watching, especially the doctor who did not expect what I did.

“And I think you know that I would win these tests convincingly,” I said after swallowing the blood and running to the trail with only hope and prayers as my weapon.

I only had a very little amount of his blood that’s why it’s still hard for me to choose which way to go but I didn't really have to anymore because just as William said, he will help me win these tests.

There are little green notes littered on my path bearing his scent.

Smiling, I closed my eyes and tried to transform with him in my mind.

“Come on, Malaika. Recognize your mate’s scent. The alpha prince is your one and only prince. He is the one given by the moon goddess to you. He is the only one for you, Malaika.”

Finally, with enough persuasion, I was able to transform into my wolf for the second time around and this time, it’s smoother than the first one.

Beaming with happiness, I ran as fast as possible, even outrunning the other two wolves and winning the second station of the test.

“Yes!” I yelled in so much joy when I shifted back into my human form and wrapped myself with a robe in the final station.

“Don’t get too happy, Alana. You are not yet the winner,” Sophia said behind my back and pointed at the tables before us. “There is still one.”

“W-What?”

But I thought the first one to win the race is the winner? What’s with this challenge that we did not know beforehand?

I immediately stood up and walked to the table where one vial full of blood is placed on top of it.

By the sweet scent of it, I instantly knew that it was William’s blood.

“It says we have to drink it,” Georgia said and drank the vial without any hesitation.

Sophia also did the same thing.

But when it was my turn, I vomited the instant I smelled his blood.

Panicking, I grabbed it and forced myself to drink it but my sense of smell and taste are not welcoming it at all.

Panting for air, I tried to drink it again but I just fell to my knees and vomited once again.

No! Why is this happening? What did I do to be punished like this?

 Crying out of desperation, I dabbed my finger on the blood and licked it just so I could vomit again.

“William…” I called for his name when I couldn't take this any longer. “William…”

I looked up at the watchtower before us and locked eyes with William who I did not know was there all along watching us.
