ALANA

I looked at Cain with a bated breath waiting for his response at William’s direct threat towards him.

An array of emotions crossed his face. Anger, envy, and then back to mischief.

“Alpha prince, you know I have nothing against you. I just discovered your secret accidentally and I do not intend to tell the alpha king about it. I am not some kind of a kiss and tell man. I respect you, William.”

He even smiled at the alpha prince who stood as stoic and cold as him. “But I don’t respect you, Cain. Not at all.”

Blinking my thoughts away, I raised my eyes at William who sounded a little too different for me. I always witness him acting all harsh and cruel to any man who comes at me but this time, it’s really different. Like there is something without me in the equation.

Cain put his hands on the pockets and chuckled, fueling William’s annoyance of him. “Why? Have you still not forgotten about it? I did not take you as a man who harbors longing and regrets.”

He glanced at me as if he wanted to say something. “Besides, you don’t have any reason to keep dwelling in the past because you already have your mate beside you.”

William clenched his jaw as his hold on my hand loosened. “You don’t have any right to say that to me!”

“She would be sad to know that you are still thinking about the past. Mar-”

A knot on my forehead appeared. What are they talking about?

“Do not ever mention her name using your filthy mouth!” William burst out. “She doesn’t deserve to be disrespected that way!”

Slowly, my hand slipped out of his grip. I am not that stupid not to get what is happening. She… past… and William’s triggered emotions…

Oh, my heart is just bleeding right now.

“Alpha prince, may I remind you that we are in the presence of your mate. Surely, you don’t want her feelings to be hurt, do you?”

William looked like he had not thought about me at all when he gazed my way, guilt is all over his face.

“I’m okay,” I murmured at him despite my heart breaking.

He sighed and bowed down his head before swooping in to kiss me in my head realizing the mistake that he made. “I’m sorry.”

I smiled at him while shaking my head trying to appear that it’s just nothing to me. “It’s okay. I am okay.”

His hands searched for my hand and held it as tight as possible. “Come on.”

He pulled me away into the direction of his room leaving Cain who I cannot help but look at.

He’s also looking at me with an unreadable emotion in his eyes.

After having lunch together, William left again to guard the borders just a few kilometers from the mansion but he made sure that I would be left with Francine.

“Francine, can I ask you something?” I asked out of the blue after putting down my glass of milk on the bedside table.

The woman looked at me from the book she’s reading. “Is it about our lessons? I think I have already told you everything I know, Alana.”

My cheeks burned when she mentioned our secret lessons of pleasuring a man that sadly, I did not get to put in use with William.

“It’s not about that. It’s about William and Cain and their animosity towards each other. They are cousins but they are not close. I mean, I am not that surprised about that but on the fact that they must have shared a quite bitter past together.”

It took her a few seconds to nod and answer. “They did. You are right. It was really a bitter past.”

Getting up from the bed, I sat next to her in curiosity. “Why? Can you tell me about it? Why do they hate each other so much? And what about this person in the middle of them before?”

Francine sighed and took my hand inside hers before telling me everything. “Her name is Margarette, Alana. Both of them like her at the same time.”

I felt my whole head getting bigger with each information that I am hearing. “I thought you cannot like someone who is not your mate?”

I swallowed the lump in my throat when I felt a big hand squeezing my heart. Knowing that my mate must have liked and cared for another girl aside from me is just something beyond me. I don’t want to sound overly jealous but I really thought I’m the only girl he liked all his life.

I guess that's just how naïve I am when it comes to relationships.

Francine found my cheeks and tapped them, seeing the bewilderment in my eyes. “They are an exemption. Both of them have not found their mate yet at that time, so they are free to fool around and roam around.”

I forced myself to nod telling myself that it’s okay because I did not exist in his life when that happened. “And? What happened after that?”

“I don’t really have the exact details but the alpha prince promised marriage to Margarette but when Cain knew about it, he kidnapped Margarette and they got into an accident. Margarette died while Cain survived. That’s when they started hating and blaming each other.”

I fell into a deep silence. That was a very bitter ending indeed. No wonder that they hated each other to the core.

“Oh, so that is the reason,” I murmured.

“Are you okay, Alana?”

I took in a long breath and forced myself to smile at her. “Honestly, I don’t know what to feel. I cannot understand how William could have fallen for her. What does she look like, Francine? She must have been so pretty and intelligent. Her family must have cherished her so much. I’m sorry if I am being jealous knowing that she is not here anymore.”

I feel so insecure about the girl who is not with us anymore and I don’t like it. I want to scold myself for even feeling it. This is just not me at all!

She hugged me tight and brushed my hair. “Don’t think about it too much. The details are vague. You can ask William about it. I’m sure he will tell you everything.”

I nodded and closed my eyes. She’s right. I am going to ask William about it. We promised to each other that there will be no lies between us. I am sure he will tell me things if I only ask him.

Suddenly, panic knocks on the door prompted us to get up and open it. One of the guards is outside panting for air.

“Ambassadress, Madam Sophia has passed out inside the cell. What should we do?”

Our eyes widened as we looked at each other. “What?!”

Francine and I ran to the basement where guards and doctors are gathered around Sophia who’s on the floor and is unconscious.

“What happened here?!” I asked in the fullest voice I could muster.

A guard stood up to explain the situation. “Ambassadress, Madam Sophia fell ill and went unconscious after drinking her water.”

“Who gave her the water?”

“It’s from your team, ambassadress. The people you appointed are taking care of the madam’s food.”

My whole body felt frozen as I looked at the woman on the cold floor. I did this to her? Did I even order this?

“Sophia! Oh, my Sophia!” Minerva broke into the crowd onto her daughter in panic. “What happened?! Who did this to my daughter?!”

“It’s because of the water, luna. The water has poison on it,” one of Sophia’s maids reported.

“What?!”

She stood up searching for me and shot me arrows of death when she glared at me. “You!” She pointed her fingers at me in anger. “Whatever will happen to Sophia will be on you! You will forever carry in your conscience what you did to her!”

“What is happening here?!” Alpha Killian’s voice echoed into the small walls of the basement.

Minerva ran into her husband crying about Sophia. “Honey! Alpha, the ambassadress poisoned our daughter! Alana is trying to kill Sophia!”

I shook my head as my eyes felt warmer around me. “I don’t! I did not do it!”

But my father already threw me a disgusted look. “Take my daughter into the hospital, Minerva! Her safety is the most important.”

His words pierced right into my heart as he caught my eyes. “You and I are going to have a serious talk, Alana.”
