ALANA

Something inside me is telling me to go see him now!

“William is meant to die, Alana. That is why I am here. I am alive now, child.”

Those words kept repeating in my head like a broken record.

Is that why she was smiling at me? Is that why I did not see any sadness in her eyes when I told her about what happened to William? Is that why she looked so confident as if telling me that everything is going to be alright?

Why did I miss that look in her face like she has finally breathed a sigh of relief?

I jumped over the small wall and traversed the hall back into the room of William.

“Francine!” I called for her name but she is not there anymore.

I ran back out again, my feet and mind are in synergy on where we are going.

I am out of breath, my heart is heavy in my chest, the notebook from my grandfather is kept safe in my hands, and my lips are parched from anticipation.

I reached the room where the alpha prince’s body is kept for the burial that we are going to hold later.

With my heart in my sleeves, I gently pushed the door open and there she was… Francine is standing in the middle of the room, looking at me like she knew that I would come here.

“Francine…” I whispered and took out the notebook for her to see. There is a reason why I smelled this same old blood on her when she came back into her old self. “Can you tell me where the last page of my grandfather’s message is?”

She just smiled and clasped her hands on her back, full sunshine on her face coming from the small window in the room. William’s body is on her back with a white cloth over him. “Do you know that there is a reason why I chose to volunteer to care for William rather than you, the daughter of the lycan prince and the grandchild of the former alpha king?”

My mouth opened to say something but no words came out.

Francine smiled and glanced at the dead covered body of William. “I had a choice to save you but I know your faith is just going to be the same as your grandfather and so I turned over my attention to the alpha prince.”

A crease appeared on my forehead. I don't really know what she’s talking about. I am beyond confused!

I stepped towards her until we came face to face with only just a meter from each other. “Francine, who are you really? Please, tell me.”

I showed her the notebook. “Why do you smell like the blood in this notebook? Do you have the last torn page? Can you tell me its content?”

She smiled and nodded, opening my palm and putting a yellow blackened paper on it. “Sure, Alana. After all, you have crossed paths with me already.”

With my trembling hands, I picked the torn paper and read it.

“I pray you will cross paths with the good-natured Francine,” the paper says.

I stared at her and she stared back at me, her plump face and overall energy and aura have come back.

“My grandfather knew you?” I whispered although the answer was already obvious.

She nodded confirming the truth. “Yes, child, because I was also the one who took good care of your grandfather and your beloved mother.”

My eyes welled. “You had ties with my family.”

Family… somehow saying that warmed my heart because finally… finally I had one to call my own.

“Yes, Alana. From the very start, when I touched your mother’s womb and felt you, I knew you would have the same fate as the former alpha king. Rejected by his own queen luna because of his condition. Always living in fear because of his own kind finding that with just one trigger, he could end his kind in an instant. The former alpha king lived a very sad life and it came to a climax when he learned that his own daughter, who thankfully did not inherit his curse, is going to get married to a lycan prince, whose blood is going to make the probability of their child just like him.”

My hand clenched around the notebook as if I could feel the fear and dread that my grandfather felt during those times.

“I was there. I saw it all. I heard it all but I could only watch in silence,” she continued while I collapsed into the floor crying.

I should have not been born in the first place.

“But I know this has to end, Alana. I looked for ways to put an end to it and found myself caring for the next alpha king when I had a vision that he is going to be your mate. The curse can never be lifted. There is no cure to it but it can be handled well and William is that complementary.”

Francine knelt before me and cupped my face. “I saw how hard William sacrificed for you, how fierce he fought for you even when knowing who you really are. He did not waver, Alana. He did not stop looking for ways to make him worthy of your love. I saw how he painfully took it all and assured himself that he can do it for you, for the love and woman that he has been waiting for all his life.”

My tears continued falling. My heart is painfully empty because someone like me is not worthy of him at all. “But I am not worthy of that, Francine. I am not worthy of his love.”

I glanced at his body from a distance. “He gave up his life for someone like me when he had a pack to lead and serve!”

I covered my face with my hands, the notebook falling from my grip. “I wished that he did not meet me! I wished that he did not save me in that dungeon if that is the only way for him not to die!”
