ALANA

“But your William is different. Way way different from all of them, Alana. He is the single person I met who can easily surrender his precious life for someone he loves. Back when he was a child, I doubted if he could ever do something for you because he tended to be selfish but I was wrong. He magically changed for the better when he began yearning for his mate.”

She slowly rose up from the floor and offered me her hand with a bright smile on her face. “Alana, that’s the precise reason why I was here in this world. That is my purpose for living. I could live on and on for hundreds of years looking for someone like you and William and now is the perfect time. Child, you both did not disappoint me.”

I accepted her hand while staring at her face, disenchanted by the happiness in her voice.

She slowly led me to William and held the white cloth to remove it.

“Francine!” I stopped her from doing what she intended to do. “What are you doing?”

But she just smiled at me and assured me with a tap on my head. “Just trust me, Alana. I have been wanting to do this since then. My heart is bleeding seeing both of you in so much pain. This is my purpose, Alana. This is the duty the moon goddess gave me in this world.”

As she slowly removed the cloth covering William exposing his dead cold body, I cannot help but gasp in pain when something stabbed my heart.

Tears began streaming down my face seeing his face once again devoid of life.

“No, Francine!” My voice broke. “Please, don’t do this to me.”

I stepped back, my head shaking. My heart and gut are being twisted in agony because of his face. Because I know I will really have to accept that he’s gone. His body here is just a vessel of his soul and his soul already left without me beside him.

“Please, Francine!” I begged and bowed my head, closing my eyes in the process.

I just cannot bear to see his lifeless body anymore. I want to preserve his live appearance in my head!

“Please, Francine. Don’t do this to me.”

But I guess she had a bit of cruelty in her because she took my hand and put it on top of William’s icy cold hand. I bit my lips and breathed a long sigh as our memories began flooding my system again, choking me.

“Francine, please…” I begged her but she just smiled at me.

“Alana, William has not yet crossed the bridge. He is still around us, loitering in the void calling for your name. He is in distress. He does not know what is happening. A dead person does not know he is dead. He is crying for your name right now so please, call on his name to come back for you.”

I opened my eyes, tears still blocking my vision.

“But I have been calling his name over and over again, Francine. I have knelt before the moon goddess for days asking her to tell William to come back but nothing is happening!”

I wept and wept hoping that his familiar warmth would enclose me but only my tears felt warm. Everything else is barren cold including his hand.

Francine put an arm around my shoulder and whispered in my ear. “That is because your voice is not enough. William needs a guard there and I will do that for him.”

I gasped hard and turned at her, my eyes blazing wide. “Francine, please do not give me this much hope because I will really believe you. Please, don’t do this to me.”

“Oh, child,” she muttered, teary-eyed. “You have to practice to believe more. Believing in things that are impossible is a form of miracle, Alana.”

She cupped my face as her tears fell. “Now, do this for William, Alana. He’s waiting for your voice there. He wants to come back to you now. He cannot let his mate be alone here when he promised you to be with you for the rest of his lifetime.”

I nodded emptying my head. I will believe her no matter how impossible it may sound. William will come back for me. He will come back for me.

I closed my eyes again, my grip on his hand getting tighter and tighter.

Francine’s arm is still on my shoulder as she whispered things I am going to tell William.

“Talk to her, Alana. Tell him to come back. Tell him that a guide is coming to lead him back.”

“Okay.”

I filled my lungs with air and caressed his ice-cold hand. “William, please.  Hear my voice, my love. Come back to me. Please hear me, my love. A guide is coming to get you back. Come back to me, my William.”

But nothing is happening and so I have to turn towards Francine who only smiled at me. “Close your eyes, Alana, and never ever open them until I tell you so, okay?”

I did what she ordered me and called for his name again, my hope ascending that he will really come back for me.

“William, please listen to me. Come back to me now, my love. You still haven’t fulfilled your promise to me, right? You said you are going to marry me. You said you are going to be with me until the end of our lives…”

My voice trailed off because of tears but I continued despite that. I am willing to do everything, exhaust everything possible, try every ritual so he could be back to me.

“William, you still haven’t married me! How dare you die without fulfilling all your promises to me!”

I smelled blood and heard it trickling down from someone’s veins but it’s not mine or William’s but Francine’s.

“Come on, Alana,” Francine said with a tinge of pain in her voice. “Call for your mate again. Believe him. Guide her back to you!”
