ALANA

It felt like all the blood in my body had been drained when I saw him staring back at me.

Did he see how my body is rejecting his blood and scent? Did he see how difficult it was for me to drink his blood even when he knows that I am his mate?

But he also knows your real identity, Alana. He knows that you are from the clan of his enemy and this is fate's way of saying that you will never be together, the small voice in my head said, rendering me helpless for the next seconds.

He looked into my eyes pleadingly and shook his head at me. “Please stop it now,” I read his mouth. “I don’t want to see you suffering anymore.”

I shook my head too in reply and took the vial in my shaking hands while not cutting off our gaze. No, I will never surrender. I will win this contest no matter what!

In a heartbeat, I opened my mouth and drank the blood in the vial feeling the liquid scalding my throat.

“Alana, no!” William screamed from the tower and jumped down towards me but the guards were quicker to stop him.

“Let me go!” he growled and easily pushed them away and ran to me but before he could, the alpha king came from nowhere and stopped his son effortlessly.

“William, get a hold of yourself!”

At that point, I can no longer hear anything in the surroundings. The blood I drank felt like spikes in my stomach urging me to vomit it but I did everything to keep them.

I have to endure it. I have to keep William’s blood inside me no matter what happens!

I fell to the ground and saw how blood coming from me dripped to the soil.

My world is spinning around but I still wanted to hold on until the end.

This is not my end. I still have to get married to William. We will still live at the lake in our cabin!

We’ll have our little babies that we will nurture together. He will still take me to the places he’s been to.

We will live most of our lives running and playing in the woods with our cute little cubs.

We will still make a family together. We will still make each other happy every day.

“Alana!” William called for my name helplessly but I cannot hear him anymore.

I only saw his mouth say my name as tears fell from his eyes.

“Father, please stop this test! Please let me save my mate! Please, let Alana live for me!” I read his mouth again because that is the only thing I can do at this moment.

“The chief doctor informed us that Alana has a rare disease that has never been seen with any of our species before,” I saw the alpha king say. “She cannot be your luna and wife because she will be useless to you! You are just going to endanger the whole of the state and the pack and make Alana miserable if you insist with your feelings!”

“No, I love her!” William threw me a look again and clenched his hands on his sides when he saw the pain in my eyes. “I will do everything for her! She is the only one for me until the day that I die, father! I will be a useless person without her! I will die for her!”

“Then are you just going to let her die for you, William! Is that love for you?! Are you just going to watch her suffer like this when you know you can do something for this to end?! How can you be so useless for her?! You are telling me that you love Alana but you can’t even sacrifice your own selfish reasons! My son, sacrificing in the name of love is the greatest thing you can do for her.”

He fell silent and looked at me. I tried to open my mouth but the words do not flow from me anymore.

“No,” I shouted in my head. “Please, William. Do not agree to that! Do not leave me! Do not take another wife for you! You promised me! You promised me! I am your mate and your luna!”

But more tears streamed down his face as he gasped hard when he saw how I twisted my body in physical pain.

William fell to his knees and kissed his father’s shoes. “Please, at least let me hold her, father! Please!”

“William…” I muttered feeling all the exhaustion inside me but I am the only one who can hear my voice. “Please, do not betray me.”

When the alpha king nodded, he ran to me in a split second and held me in his arms but his skin felt like fire in my flesh that I screamed in pain.

He squirmed away from me and helplessly pulled at his hair seeing how he’s causing me so much agony. Our eyes at each other with tears drenching our whole faces and blood seething out of my mouth, William uttered the most painful words that I have ever heard of.

“I, William…”

His voice broke as he forced himself to finish his sentence.

Shaking my head fervently, I crawled my way into him but he kept on shaking his head while taking a step back.

“I… W-William,” he repeated the words again while breathing harshly.

“No…” I managed to say despite the scratching pain in my throat. “P-Please, don’t do this to me.”

“It’s for your own good, Alana. I cannot really take seeing you in pain when I can do something to ease it.” He panted for air again. “I’m sorry, Alana. I’m sorry, my love.”

Our memories together flashed in my mind in a series of black and white pictures.

How about the promises we made to do together? How about the five kids we will be having or the vows we are going to say to each other?

I continued crawling towards him and smiled a little when I was able to touch his shoes but my heart broke into pieces when he whispered the final words.

“I, William, the alpha prince of the Brookefields state, do hereby reject you, Alana Harriston, as my mate and luna.”

I froze in my spot when something inside me died that second. Something broke in my chest and a cold wind embraced me.  

The thin… that final thread that connects us, burst into flames.

With tears welling in my eyes, I let go of my final breath and let darkness engulf me, hoping that this is all just a nightmare and everything will go back to normal once I wake up from this bad dream.
