Serena let out a small sigh as she pulled the blanket up to Amy’s chin, tucking her in securely.

Amy’s soft breaths filled the room, her little hand curled near her face.

Serena watched her daughter for a moment, a faint smile touching her lips.

Leaning down, she pressed a gentle kiss on Amy’s forehead. “Sleep well, my love,” she whispered.

She turned off the bedside lamp and quietly slipped out of the room, closing the door behind her.

As she walked toward her own room, exhaustion settled over her.

The ball last night, Kate’s humiliation attempt, the way Ryan had stepped in—it was all still fresh in her mind.

She entered her room, shut the door, and let out a long breath.

Sitting on the edge of her bed, she grabbed her phone from the nightstand, planning to check her emails before sleeping.

As she scrolled through, her eyes caught a familiar name.

Bianca.

Her fingers hesitated before clicking on the message.

“I’m sorry for everything. I was wrong. I hope you find happiness.”

Serena read the short message twice, her brows knitting together.

Bianca… apologizing?

A few days ago, she wouldn’t have believed it.

But after last night, after everything Nathan had said to her, it seemed like Bianca had finally accepted defeat.

Serena sighed, tossing her phone aside.

The Next Morning

Kate stormed toward the Winters’ mansion, her heels clicking sharply against the pavement.

Ryan had ignored her last night. Not a single call. Not a single text.

And she needed to know why.

The moment she reached the front door, she rang the bell impatiently, tapping her foot as she waited.

A butler opened the door, his expression neutral. “Miss Kate, good morning—”

“Where’s Mrs. Winters?” Kate cut in, pushing past him without waiting for an invitation.

The butler blinked in surprise but quickly regained composure.

“She’s in the sunroom, having breakfast.”

Kate didn’t waste another second. She marched toward the sunroom, her heart pounding.

When she stepped inside, she found Mrs. Winters sitting gracefully at the table, sipping her tea.

Sunlight streamed through the large windows, casting a golden glow over the elegant space.

Mrs. Winters looked up and smiled politely. “Kate, dear. What a surprise. Have you had breakfast?”

Kate clenched her fists. “Ryan never called me.”

Mrs. Winters stirred her tea calmly.

“Oh? That’s odd. He told me you had an urgent call and couldn’t make it.”

Kate’s body stiffened.

“What?” she hissed.

Mrs. Winters gave her a pointed look. “That’s what he said.”

Kate’s breath hitched.

Ryan had lied.

Not only had he ignored her, but he had also made up an excuse to cover for it.

Her nails dug into her palm as rage built inside her.

“That’s not true,” she said through gritted teeth. “I never got any urgent calls. I was waiting for him all night!”

Mrs. Winters sighed, setting her cup down.

“Kate, dear, I think you should talk to Ryan about this. I can’t speak for him.”

Kate inhaled sharply, her nostrils flaring.

Talk to Ryan? As if that would change anything.

After Kate stormed out of the Winters’ mansion, Mrs. Winters sat there for a moment, her hands clenched tightly around the porcelain teacup.

Her mind raced with thoughts of her son. She was furious.

She wasn’t sure whether she was angry at Ryan for lying or at Kate for causing all this trouble.

Either way, the situation needed to be fixed, and she was determined to get to the bottom of it.

With a frustrated sigh, she grabbed her phone from the table and dialed Ryan’s number.

“Ryan!” Mrs. Winters snapped, her voice sharp. “Where are you? Why did you lie to Kate about the dinner?”

Ryan let out a long sigh on the other end.

“Mom, I didn’t want to deal with it. I just needed some time to think, okay?”

“Needed time to think?” Mrs. Winters’s voice grew louder, her patience thinning.

“You never called nor went to pick her up, and you lied about her getting an urgent call! What kind of excuse is that?”

Ryan was quiet for a moment before replying.

“I’m sorry, but I needed to clear my head. I just couldn’t handle all of it last night. The pressure… from everything. I needed a break from Kate.”

Mrs. Winters’s lips tightened into a thin line.

“A break from Kate? You’re playing with her emotions, Ryan! This is not how you handle things. She’s been with you through thick and thin, and you—”

“I know, Mom,” Ryan interrupted, his voice tinged with frustration.

“But you don’t understand. I just need some space. I can’t keep pretending everything is fine when it’s not.”

Mrs. Winters huffed. “Fine? You call this fine? You should have been honest with her from the start!”

Ryan sighed heavily. “I know. I messed up.”

There was a long silence on the phone before Mrs. Winters finally spoke again, her tone softening just slightly.

“Ryan, I know you’re struggling, but lying isn’t going to solve anything. You need to figure things out, but don’t hurt Kate in the process.”

Ryan’s voice was barely above a whisper.

“I don’t want to hurt her. But I need to do this. I have to clear my mind before I can make any decisions.”

Mrs. Winters closed her eyes, her expression pained. “Just… don’t make things worse than they already are, okay?”

Ryan paused before responding, his voice tinged with regret. “I’ll fix it, Mom. I promise.”

Mrs. Winters let out a frustrated breath. “You better. Or I’m not going to let you off the hook for this one.”

There was a brief pause before she ended the call with a firm “Goodbye.”

After hanging up, Mrs. Winters muttered to herself under her breath, “Such an annoying boy…”

She sat there for a few moments, lost in thought.

As much as she wanted to be angry with Ryan, she knew she had to do something to smooth things over with Kate.

She decided to call Kate.

“I know, dear, I know. But please understand, Ryan is going through a lot right now. He’s not handling it well, and he made a mistake by lying to you. That’s not how things should have gone down.”

Kate let out an exasperated sigh. “I just don’t get it. One minute he’s all over me, and the next he’s pushing me away. And now I find out he’s been avoiding me because he needed ‘space.’”

Mrs. Winters’s voice softened.

“He’s not good at expressing what he’s feeling. And sometimes he needs time to process things. He doesn’t mean to hurt you.”

Kate snorted. “If he didn’t want to hurt me, he wouldn’t be acting like this.”

Mrs. Winters sighed again. “I know this is hard for you, Kate. But please don’t give up on him. He’s just confused right now. I promise, things will work out if you just give him some time.”

Kate rolled her eyes, though Mrs. Winters couldn’t hear it.

“I don’t know what he wants anymore, and frankly, I don’t know if I care.”

Mrs. Winters’s eyes widened at Kate’s comment, but she chose not to respond.

“I’m just asking for some patience, Kate. I don’t want to see you two torn apart. Please, for my sake, don’t give up on him.”

Kate didn’t reply, but the line went silent before Mrs. Winters spoke one final time. “Goodbye, Kate.”
