The television across from him flickered with images of Serena’s press conference, her calm yet firm voice filling the silence of the room.

The media had completely shifted in her favor, painting her as the woman who had been wronged, the wife who had suffered betrayal and public humiliation at the hands of her husband and his supposed mistress.

Ryan exhaled sharply, running a hand through his hair.

He had known this would happen the moment Serena stepped forward, but what frustrated him wasn’t the backlash—it was the fact that everything she had said was true.

He had hurt her unknowingly back then.

The scandal had already hit its peak, and now, all eyes were on Kate. People were demanding answers.

And yet, Kate hadn’t left the house all day.

Ryan glanced toward the staircase. She had claimed she wasn’t feeling well, that she needed time alone.

His phone vibrated on the coffee table. An unknown number.

He hesitated before picking up. “Hello?”

Ryan frowned. “Who is this?”

“I work at the hospital. I was involved in Miss Sullivan’s case. There’s something you should know.”

Ryan sat up straighter. “What are you talking about?”

The woman’s voice was hushed, as if she was afraid of being overheard.

“I can’t say much over the phone, but there were… discrepancies in the medical reports. I tried to look into it, but the file was restricted. And then—” She cut off abruptly, as if someone had walked in on her.

Ryan’s grip on the phone tightened. “Hello?”

Silence. Then the line disconnected.

He pulled the phone away from his ear, staring at the screen in confusion. His pulse quickened. Discrepancies? A restricted file?

Something wasn’t right.

Before he could call the number back, soft footsteps sounded from the staircase.

“Ryan?”

He turned, seeing Kate descending slowly. She was wrapped in one of his shirts, her damp hair curling slightly at the ends. She offered a small smile, though her eyes looked wary.

“You’ve been sitting here all day,” she said softly, stopping at the bottom of the stairs.

Ryan placed his glass down, watching her carefully. “Didn’t feel like going anywhere.”

Kate hesitated before walking over, her bare feet soundless against the floor.

“I was thinking…” She reached out, brushing her fingers along the back of his hand.

“Maybe we could spend some time together. Just us. No stress, no media, no drama.”

Ryan didn’t respond immediately. His mind was still stuck on the call.

“Ryan?” she pressed gently, tilting her head. “You’re not even looking at me.”

He finally met her gaze. “I got a call from the hospital.”

Kate stilled. “…What?”

Ryan studied her closely. “Someone who worked on your case. They said there were inconsistencies in your medical report.”

Kate’s lips parted slightly, but she quickly schooled her expression into one of hurt.

“Ryan… why would you even entertain something like that? You were there. You saw me in pain. You saw—” Her voice cracked, and she looked away as if struggling with the memory.

“Why would anyone say something like that?”

“I don’t know,” he admitted. “That’s why I’m going to find out.”

Kate took a deep breath, her fingers curling at her sides. “Ryan, please. I don’t want to relive that pain.”

There was something forced about the way she said it, but Ryan didn’t call her out on it.

Instead, he leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. “Kate, if there’s anything you’re not telling me—”

“I’m not lying,” she cut in quickly, her eyes wide. “I would never lie to you.”

Ryan didn’t say anything. He just watched her, and the silence stretched.

Kate suddenly stepped forward, lowering herself onto the couch beside him.

She reached out, her fingers gently brushing against his wrist.

“Can’t we just focus on us? We’ve been through so much. I don’t want to lose you again.”

Her voice was soft, pleading.

Ryan studied her, the way her eyes flickered with desperation, the way her fingers trembled slightly where they rested on his wrist.

He leaned back, exhaling slowly. “What do you want us to do, Kate?”

Ryan didn’t respond immediately.

“Fine,” he said after a long pause.

Kate beamed, jumping up to grab the remote. “I’ll pick something good!”

Ryan watched her as she scrolled through the movie options, her excitement almost too forced.

“Here!” She settled on a romantic drama and curled up beside him, resting her head on his shoulder.

Halfway through the movie, Kate shifted closer, wrapping an arm around his waist. “I miss this,” she whispered. “I miss us.”

Ryan sighed. “Kate—”

She lifted her head, her eyes searching his. “Don’t say anything. Just… let’s pretend, even if just for tonight, that nothing else matters.”
