“Missed me?” Flynn said with an evil smirk.

I was shocked and confused, my face betraying my feelings. I was scared that seeing him here meant that he'd won the battle back at Arkonos because I'd seen their dungeons and you'd have to be really strong and nifty to break out of it.

And now, he was controlling werewolves? These people found it hard to be controlled by their own people so a totally different species making them do his dirty work just seemed out of place.

“Wait, how are you doing this? You train dragon riders, what's your business with werewolves and what's your issue with me?” I asked even though I didn't expect him to provide much answers

I'd sighted Elena running towards me but I doubted if she'd make it here before Flynn did his magic sucking thing again so I needed to keep him distracted.

I wasn't getting kidnapped today.

“A few connections here and there. I'm resourceful, you know that and as for why… well, let's say you're the key to so many things and I want to hold that key,” he said and began arranging the rope he was supposed to tie me with.

“Ahh!” I screamed in agony as someone bit into Axel who had gone to drag Ares out of danger and took over in killing the wolves who were stronger than normal wolves.

Flynn looked at me passively, my reaction to my mates in pain not fazing him.

Elena was still a few meters away from me so I knew I needed to put more pressure on him to get him to talk.

“What is it with men around me fighting so hard to objectify me? I'm not a thing you can use to get what you desire, I'm a living, breathing being with a mind. I have feelings! What if we would have been able to work together? What if I could have seen your point of view or at least ensure we came to a middle ground? Instead, you decided to kill me and when that didn't work, you're trying to kill me,” I vented, frustrated with everything, including the wolf that had gotten into her path.

“Hiya!” She screamed as she plunged a knife to its throat. Thankfully, these were normal werewolves instead of the ones that you could only kill with fire. I'd barely be able to light a match right now.

“Kill you? No one wants you dead, well, except him if you refuse his demands but everyone else just knows how important you are and it's a race for who gets you first and lucky me, I know how to get werewolf warriors,” he smiled proudly to himself. I'd never seen this side of him. He was always serious and pensive, demanding absolute perfection or he'd blow up on me.

His words only served to rattle my cage.

“Everyone seems to know my destiny except me. So what makes you think that if you forcefully kidnap me, that I'm going to work for you?”

“I have my ways,” he replied and brought out a knife. He flung it at one of the guards but I spoke quickly, interrupting his concentration.

“If I don't believe in a cause, I'm definitely not going to help you out with it no matter what. I really thought you were one of the good guys, Flynn. What was the point of training me so hard only to take away my powers?”

Deep down, I knew I was in trouble if he found out what I was doing but Elena was still not here and she was looking around for something. Then I remembered we had a neural connection from her dragon, Scarlet.

“What are you looking for?” I asked her, my voice in her head startling her for a second.

She quickly regained her stance quickly in time to kill another wolf. I didn't know she was this strong or maybe the knife was enchanted. She didn't even hit this one in a vital area, he simply fell immediately when the knife entered its flesh.

“A clear space where I can build this spell,” she replied to me.

“What about the back of this car? Walk stealthily,”

“Oh, I have a better idea. I'll teleport,” she replied and I had to hold back a smile as I was still in the middle of an interrogation and attempted kidnapping so I shook my head to get back into character before paying attention to what Flynn was saying, his facial expression showing he'd been talking for quite a bit.

“– them away? What do you mean by that? Your powers should even be stronger at this point,” he asked, clearly confused.

“You put something in my system and now I'm powerless. Why else are they fighting alone when I can do more damage?”

“I thought it was because of your pregnancy,”

“Jeez, does everybody know about that?” I asked incredulously.

“Only like, half of Arkonos so yea. Not everybody,”

“I haven't lit a candle since I escaped your attempt to kidnap me,” I told him, conveying every inch of sadness into my voice.

“Look, they said it was only going to knock you out, not affect your powers so I have no idea that this was gonna happen, I –”

“Who are they? Someone is making you do this? Are you safe?” I asked, genuinely concerned.

Maybe he was being blackmailed or something because it really hurt to have him flip on me like that. I'd always thought of him as a teacher that I'll have for the rest of our lives but here we were at a crossroads, him under the thumb of another.

“Very kind of you to be worried about me but I'm a dead man already. I might as well make something of my existence before they come for my corpse. Now, enough chit chat, let's go. I'll find a way to get our clan healer to come look at you,” he said, beckoning me to come out of the car like I had no other choice.

I watched her through the rearview mirror as she mumbled words and twisted her hands in various directions. I knew I couldn't delay it any further and I hoped with everything in me that she was finally done.

“Ahh!” I shouted again, the shock of my mate getting bitten again putting my display on pause.

“Don't worry, once he meets you, he'll dissolve the bond and you can be a free woman again,” he said, waiting for me to come to him.

He wasn't trying to be scary or forceful, he just expected me to realize I didn't have any choice and follow him willingly but thankfully, I did

I looked at the rearview mirror and it was empty. I looked up and realized Elena had finally finished her spell and was standing at his back. She must have used her teleportation spell again. I hoped that it wouldn't make her weak as we needed this to work desperately.

“Come on, Aurora, I don't want this to get nasty. Your mates are not going to die yet but you have to follow me for this to end. So come on out,” he said, his tone bordering on irritation as though he had better things to do than kidnap a confused princess.

Immediately he got fed up of watching me pull back in fear, he tried coming into the car but Elena quickly pulled the spider web over him

“What the fuck?” He growled in anger and frustration, the web growing bigger the longer he struggled against it.

In a few seconds, he was wrapped in a thick fog of cobwebs and I looked at Elena as we shared a smile of victory.

Immediately he was down, the rest of the wolves began to feel weak and were easier to kill. It seemed like they weren't turning the dead wolves into rogues anymore, simply resurrecting them and we had finally gotten someone who was close enough to give us information.

“Let's go and help them. Take this knife, it's magical so you don't have to expend energy,” Elena said, putting a long knife with both edges sharp in my hand.

“A moment ago, they were like Superman in werewolf skin and now they can't even stand on their own,” I told Elena as we waded through deteriorating wolves.

“It's obvious they've been dead a long time ago and whatever they gave to your friend over there kept them up. Now that they're dead, they're simply decomposing,” she replied and we both gagged at the same time, the whole place dreary and gloomy.

We didn't need to keep fighting anymore as the wolves weren't even strong enough to stand straight up.

We got to the spot Ares was and he was groaning in pain, his body filled with scars.

“Um, Elena, I know he's not a vampire and all but aren't his wounds supposed to have been healing at a faster rate than this? The skin is not even tingling,” I asked, fear of something terrible crawling around my body and mind

“Wait, let me see,” she said and knelt down next to me and began examining his wounds.

“Something is just… wrong,” she said, waving her hand back and forth on the huge gash on his lap.

Axel then walked over to us, his body bloodied and he was even limping.

“We're done, we're going to burn these bodies and then be on our way. We'll probably pass through the dense forest to avoid any further attacks,” he said and we nodded.

We needed to get out of the road as it wasn't safe anymore.

But Ares was still not healing and a deep feeling of fear hung over our heads because this was very unusual.
