The Tripartite Mate Bond Chapter 89: CHAPTER EIGHTY-NINE
“KANE’S POV “
I wasn't the type to obsess over things I couldn't change but right now, I hated how incapacitated I was, standing before the old, grumpy dubious men who controlled the supernatural world.
They had tried dividing us into separate boxes of shifter and wielders but we discovered we needed each and formed individual alliances, witches and warlocks helping shifters to protect their packs and shifters coming to the defense of the wielders when in danger. It was a system that worked regardless of how much the council sowed distractions among us.
Ares had told me of his pack’s witch and her daughter’s fear for our lives but the prophecy had no time frame, meaning it could well be when we were at the ripe old age of four hundred or when someone shoots me if I decide to strangle the neck of one of these old cronies droning on about the alliance.
“... Our powers are stronger when we keep the balance. Dragons and all sights of them are to be reported to the council for elimination for they pose a threat to the balance we have successfully created for decades now. Kane, Alpha of DarkMoon, you're hereby accused of harboring dragons without reporting them. How do you plead?” The raven-haired vampire with cheekbones that could cut through ice and a steely glare asked me with a subtle sneer.
I was standing in the middle of the fifty-man council who sat in a circular form, addressing different issues that plagued the supernatural community and judging threats to the so-called balance like a dragon. They wanted to pretend it's about balance but everyone here knew that if dragons came back into power, they would have to either step down or start doing their jobs properly and not be such classiest pigs. Anyways, I was still under their paws and claws so I had to answer their questions. For now.
“I would like to know who it is that makes such accusations, Supreme Councilman. It is indeed a heavy one and I can't answer without knowing where it is coming from,” I answered, staring right back at him. I'm an Alpha, he knows I won't back down from a challenge, even one as obscure as a stare challenge. To everyone else, it's so silly but it's the first and basic power tussle between all creatures. It's like a game of chicken, only this is a test of wills and inner power.
And of course he looks away first, his fangs struggling to stay in.
“You don't have the right to demand that, Kane! Councilman Kaelin Darkshadow asked you a question and you must answer immediately!” A round and probably overfed werewolf shouted at me, making my wolf's hackles rise in irritation. He was supposed to be one of us but everyone knows he got to his position by killing his brother and he has lost the respect of the werewolf community. We are simply waiting for the next voting session to kick him out. Unfortunately, that won't happen for the next eight years. He knows this and is involved in so much corruption knowing he won't be able to hold the position for much longer, probably trying to retire nicely since his pack won't take him back when he's no longer councilman.
The other option is to kill him of course but that would incur the wrath of this band of thieves that we're all too occupied to do away with. There are obviously good ones amongst them but their voices are silenced by the corrupt ones.
“Councilman Ricky, it is important not to disrespect our individual cultures in the council's meeting to avoid one's species being looked down upon. How will other people respect wolves if our own representative doesn't know how to properly address an Alpha?” I said in a low but powerful tone, conveying the entire community’s disappointment in him with a subtle jab only he could feel
He was speechless for a second before trying to speak but I cut him off again, not caring for his stupid thoughts.
“I have understood your intentions and am willing to align with them as the council demands but I must have full information before taking any form of action. Besides, I'm sure this is a bit misunderstanding so once you present the person to me, we can get this over with quickly,” I told them
I began to hear murmurs around the room, the council discussing my demands
“Alpha Kane, the problem here is we have promised this person immunity and we intend to keep our words,” A warlock spoke, adjusting his glasses.
“That's new. I'm sure you can explain to them that it is imperative for your job. Whoever it is, I'm sure they care deeply about our survival as a race and won't want to blow something ridiculous out of proportion so please, do it to me as a favor,” I told them, knowing fully well this was the only language they understood.
The hall went quiet at my words. My father had owed them before and nearly died paying back but I wasn't him, I was stronger and smarter than these cronies, besides, I have three Alphas with me now. This was important.
If I found out who this traitor was, I wouldn't need to put myself through the pain of finding out the traitor myself. They've literally put themselves in my hands.
“You're aware of what you are saying, Alpha Kane?” Councilman Kaelin asked me.
“Yes, Councilman. I'll be indebted to the council and if they need a favor from me, just one, so far it's in my capacity, I'll do it with no questions asked,” I explained.
“Fine. There's a pin and a pad right in front of you. Seal the favor and we shall have the witness out immediately,” he ordered and I looked at the pin. Supernaturals had a hate-love relationship with diseases. We technically don't get caught in its trap because of how strong our blood is but if for any reason it wins the battle, you won't be able to recover from it.
On that note, I pierced my thumb with my own fangs and dropped the blood on the white foam like pad that was on the table. A vampire’s human servant came to collect it as they were the keepers of everything blood related.
I then waited as they called for the person that ratted us out. I had done a head count multiple times in my mind, trying to figure out who had left the pack after the dragons came home with us and apart from Jayden, there was no one else. Pack members were evenly divided between the human and supernatural world based on their talents and abilities.
So only during the full moon do we get a massive turn out of human dwellers and in cases like the Luna Ceremony.
So the timing showed whoever was doing this was probably not a part of my pack. I suspected that Ares or Axel might have confided in someone or even Flynn. I noticed his absence before leaving the pack and was supposed to ask Aurora but I got sidetracked.
I realized that as I was going over the many thoughts about this mystery person, time was passing and they had failed to provide them.
“Is there a problem, Council?” I asked them, my wolf was getting antsy. It wasn't beyond them to make me swear a blood oath and not fulfill their part of the deal.
“Kindly give us a minute, the witness is proving to be a little difficult,” Councilman Rahman said as he got up and went outside, the door shutting loudly behind him.
We waited for another thirty minutes, I had looked at my clock a hundred times already and right before I was about to shout at them, he came back in, looking frustrated.
“Alpha Kane, we're having a little bit of difficulty with the witness. He insists on not letting you see him, infact, he's willing to take back his testimony and without it, this is kind of futile. So I guess that means you are free to go, but as a precautionary measure, I think it'll be best to send some men with you to search around your pack for any signs of the dragon, right council?” he asked and they all nodded.
“Wait, are you saying this wolf is so strong that you can't make him appear before the council he ran to with his lies?” I demanded, my patience running thin. Besides, they had already gotten what they wanted so of course they were going to try to cheat me but I wasn't my father and it's high time they realized that.
“Well, you see, that's the problem. He's human.”
That's one part of the council that works and we're grateful for. Humans are not to be harmed in any way. They are highly volatile and one single mistake can bring them down our path in droves, leading to a full out war. As weak as they are, they have the numbers we do not have.
But this got me thinking, which human would want to take me down this way?
Then it occurred to me.
Fuck.
This was the part that failed to cross my mind completely.
“Does this man have black hair, wears glasses and has crooked teeth?” I asked, hoping it was someone else than who I thought it was because running to the council for refuge meant I'd need Ricky’s help and I would do anything to avoid being associated with that snake.
“Yes, you seem to know him,” he replied, shock written all over his features
“Yes, in fact I do. Look, I have an idea. Since I've already made the blood oath and there's no way to undo it, why not drive him to my pack's borders and leave him there? Just confuse his memory a little bit, Councilman Justin can help with that, being that he's a seasoned warlock. I get to find out if my suspicions are right and you get to keep your promises while validating the oath,” I offered them, hoping desperately that they'll take it.
They began murmuring between themselves.
“That is fine. We'll send him with the representatives going to scour your pack for any suspicious activity. Meanwhile, we'll have to seize your communication devices to prevent any attempt at a cover up,” Councilman Kaelin announced.
I agreed but as I handed over my phone's and watches, somehow, I felt like I was doing something incredibly wrong. I just couldn't put my finger on it.
Please tell him I'm not going to hurt him. His daughter has been
