*AXEL POV

How on earth we got so lucky to have a literal goddess as our mate is beyond me.

As I watched her fly off into the sunset with Scarlett, the feeling of pride in my heart intensified.

Although I could sense something was off, I didn't pay any mind to it. I was just happy I survived the battle with my life intact.

Chris, however, was another story altogether. We'd tied up the stubbed part to stop the bleeding and I couldn't imagine how his new mate was going to feel seeing him like this. She'd given everything she could for this war and yet, her mate was coming back to her, broken.

The only beautiful part of all of this was that my brother was finally going to be able to make use of his gift of leadership to make our world a better place.

I was a part of a prophecy, a great destiny woven in the ancient history of our world and I had played a role in averting the danger that had threatened us. I was so excited at the things we could do together, just the three of us.

The journey home was longer than it took for us to get here. I had gone in and out of sleep as my body was healing from the poison it had taken. I hoped I'll be healed enough for tonight as I saw the look in my mate's eyes before she flew off; no one was sleeping a wink tonight.

It was a normal scenario in werewolf world that after a battle, mates that made it to each other at the end of it glued themselves together in the throes of passion until the next day.

Even though we'd lost so many lives as a result of terrible planning, a great deal had returned safely and I knew we were going to have a rowdy night tonight.

When we got through the pack gates, I saw Aurora had already organized a bonfire for the pack members that were left in the safehouse.

Whatever joy some of them felt was going to vanish when they saw the body of their dead family members though. The thought tore through my weak body.

As though reading my thoughts, Elena ran out of the pack house and straight for the car I'd come back in, tears in her eyes.

“What happened to him?” She asked me but I knew she didn't really need an answer, she knew the war took what it could and we just had to salvage as much as possible.

“Don't worry, some warriors are going to get him to your room in a few,” I assured her, unsure how to console her.

That was Ares' forte. I was the type to make jokes in very serious situations, my way of dealing with my own internal pain. I sent a message to a few warriors and they quickly came and carried Chris out of the car

Ares was already up and about giving out orders and all and I knew he wouldn't stop until someone made him. The man didn't understand the word ‘rest’

I also knew he wouldn't listen to me in that state of mind that he was in so I decided to recruit someone to do it.

Aurora had switched from entertaining little children in front of the bonfire as Omegas brought out dishes from the kitchen to helping people connect with their dead loved ones.

I knew she was doing that because she had that whiteness in her eyes that showed she was no longer with us.

Knowing her as well, she was definitely going to keep doing that until she passed out but then, would she do that? Or she'd just keep working until everyone was able to see their partners for the last time? I shook my head from those thoughts and went straight to her, the two workaholics could help each other out.

Everything could be sorted out tomorrow after everyone had gotten a chance to at least sleep, it's been over forty-eight hours and none of us had gotten a wink.

I waited for her to finish with the person she was with before I joined her on the couch. I guess they'd pulled everything out of the pack house so the bonfire could be more comfortable.

“Hey Princess,” I said, kissing her cheek.

“You stink,” she replied, wrinkling her nose.

I fake gasped dramatically, “how dare you! I smell like daisies!”

“No you don't! You smell like you've been killing werewolves and vampires and stuff,” she said and then paused like she was thinking deeply about it, “oh yes, you actually just did that! Go shower before you rob off your gore on me love,”

“You're no fun,” I said trying to touch her with my hands playfully and she dodged it, our laughter echoing around us, many pack members joining in as well. “But hey, I'm not the problem. It's Ares, he's going to drop dead soon if someone doesn't press his pause button,”

“Damn, he's still busy?”

“Yea, our Beta is out of commission but I'm sure the warriors know what to do, he's just antsy from all the loss and everything, he wants to make sure every toothpick is placed on the right spot,” I explained to her and thankfully, she agreed to go talk to him.

I would have had to carry him off by force otherwise.

As she got up, I faced the pack members who stood around the fire, their faces down.

“What are y'all doing looking half dead? You can come back for your needs tomorrow morning.” They looked at me like I'd grown two heads, “Go to bed, it's past midnight!” I commanded loudly and I could see the shock on their faces. They weren't used to me giving orders.

As they scrambled over themselves, it occurred to me that this might have to be the new norm for me. No more playing or goofing around as the Royal Beta. People will need to know my other side, the one they saw at the battle today.

But that part of me was going to have to wait as I needed to go be with my mate and twin brother and the only serious part of tonight would be me making her cum as many times as possible.
