No Wife, No Life Chapter 106
Caden lay on the hospital bed, his once handsome face now pale and haggard.
The anesthesia seemed to be wearing off, or maybe he was feeling the pain in his body, because his brows furrowed slightly.
Seeing her approach, a comforting smile spread across his lips.
"What are you up to?" Harper walked over, sat by the bed, and took his hand.
His body was numb, but he could still feel Harper's soft fingers brushing against his palm, warm with her touch.
"I didn't let them take the documents." His voice was hoarse, but gentle.
The first thing he said upon waking was to reassure Harper about the documents.
He didn't mention the car accident or his pain, only the documents, as if they were more important than his own life.
Harper gazed at him, their eyes meeting, and she glimpsed the faint traces of mirth in his eyes.
For a moment, Harper was speechless. "Caden, you're pulling that trick on me again."
Indeed, the first thing he did upon waking was to tell her that he hadn't let anyone take Alvina's documents.
Why did he say that?
He was deliberately making Harper feel guilty.
Everything he did was for her, so Harper would feel an unbreakable bond with him out of guilt.
Caden chuckled softly.
Harper was smart, seeing through it all in an instant.
But she still leaned down and left a gentle kiss on the corner of his lips.
His lips were dry but soft.
Being so close, she could still smell the faint scent of blood and the strong medicinal odor on him.
"Harper, the anesthesia hasn't worn off yet."
Caden tried to hold her hand but was too weak, his voice tinged with helplessness. "You can wait until tomorrow to kiss me."
"Don't even think about it." Harper teased him lightly.
Suddenly, she buried her head and whispered in his ear, "Caden, I'm really scared."
At that moment, she was truly afraid of losing him forever.
She gently raised her arm. "Look, my arm is still shaking."
Caden's eyes dimmed, but he focused on her slender, glossy hand.
"Your hand is beautiful." He teased as usual.
Harper was exasperated. "That's not what I wanted you to see."
"Then what do you want me to see?" He smiled playfully, "Whatever you want me to see, I'll take a good look."
He seemed to be deliberately changing the subject, speaking in a light-hearted tone.
Harper glared at him. "Caden, didn't you notice my hand has been shaking?"
"Indeed."
At this point, Jacob, who had been standing nearby, couldn't take it anymore.
He never expected Caden to be like this.
Since entering the room, Caden hadn't stopped talking, acting like a complete playboy.
Even though he didn't like Alex's cold demeanor, it didn't mean he had to accept this playboy in front of him.
How could Harper be with such a playboy?
"Mr. Elikin, it seems your injuries aren't that serious." Jacob spoke slowly.
In this situation, Caden could still joke around, showing no signs of being a patient.
Caden finally turned his gaze to him, sensing the disapproval and anger in Jacob's eyes, and greeted him warmly. "Jacob."
Since Caden had decided to be with Harper, he had naturally investigated everyone around her, including Jacob, the CEO of HoloSphere Technologies.
Jacob was speechless.
Caden's friendly tone made Jacob's skin crawl.
He had only heard rumors about Caden being troublesome, but now he truly felt it.
But there was nothing he could do about Caden, especially since Caden had just been in a car accident because of Harper.
For some reason, Jacob genuinely felt that this future brother-in-law would be a handful and would definitely cause trouble in the future.
So, he was genuinely worried for Harper.
Was Caden really someone Harper could rely on for life?
"Caden, you and Harper are not yet married, so there's no need to be overly cordial with me."
Jacob's tone was indifferent.
He was warning Caden that he hadn't accepted him as a brother-in-law yet, so he should behave.
But Caden sighed dramatically, gently squeezing Harper's hand. "Harper, does Jacob dislike me?"
Harper was speechless.
Even now, Caden was still acting. How much did he enjoy putting on a show?
Jacob turned to Harper, his eyes full of helplessness, as if saying, "Control him, please."
Just then, Caden's phone buzzed with a message from his assistant.
The message informed Caden that Harper would be auctioning off Alvina's manuscripts in five days.
Caden looked up at Harper, his tone still gentle, not angry at all. "You're going to sell your mother's manuscripts."
Those manuscripts were something he had risked his life for, and now Harper was going to auction them off. Anyone else would have been confused and angry.
Harper nodded: "Yes, those manuscripts mean nothing to me; they only bring misfortune."
In her view, this manuscript was undoubtedly an ominous object; otherwise, Caden would not have been targeted by Jeremy so swiftly, leading to the car accident that left him in the hospital.
"But they were left to you by your mother." Caden wasn't trying to persuade her, just making a suggestion.
He would respect all of Harper's choices.
But Harper chuckled softly. "Caden, you're smart enough to know why I'm selling the manuscripts, right?"
Her tone was firm. "I don't want anything that can harm the people around me, even if it's my mother's legacy, no matter how valuable it is."
Her eyes flashed as she looked at Caden. "Besides, this is the best way to hit Jeremy, isn't it?"
She knew Jeremy wanted those documents the most.
So, she would give them to him.
But he would have to pay a hefty price for them.
At this moment, Caden smiled intriguingly, his voice carrying a hint of temptation. "If that's the case, why not give him a real manuscript instead of a fake one?"
He saw through Harper's plan immediately.
Of course, Harper wouldn't give him the real manuscript.
Harper tilted her head and looked at him, asking, "How do you know I'm giving him a fake manuscript?"
"Because we're a perfect match." Caden's smile deepened.
Harper nodded. "Jeremy spending a fortune on a useless fake manuscript will hit him harder."
She calmly explained her plan, "What do you think about adding a virus code to the manuscript?"
Caden raised an eyebrow immediately. "Sounds great."
Jacob, watching from the side, was completely stunned.
