No Wife, No Life Chapter 77
Emily bit down hard on her lower lip, her nails digging so deeply into her palms they nearly broke the skin.
For the first time in her life, she felt utterly humiliated.
In front of everyone, she was like a clown, exposed to their mocking laughter and ridicule.
How could someone as foolish, idiotic, and incompetent as her have joined the Lavien Group?
Harper! It was all because of Harper.
If it weren't for her, there wouldn't have been such a spectacle, making her the laughingstock of the office.
Emily never looked inward for the cause of her problems; she always blamed others.
She didn't fault herself for her incompetence but resented Harper for ruining her plans.
Someone stood up.
Out of the corner of her eye, Emily saw Harper rise from her seat, her face expressionless and her eyes indifferent.
Emily couldn't hold it in any longer.
She shot up from her chair and chased after Harper, grabbing her arm, her eyes blazing with fury.
"Are you happy now? Watching me become a laughstock. Does that make you feel good?"
Harper's expression remained calm, her gaze barely resting on Emily.
"Emily, you were the one who pursued this contract and insisted on signing it."
No one forced her, and no one set her up.
It was all her own doing.
Besides, Harper had warned her that the contract was a trap, but Emily refused to listen.
She was determined to prove herself.
Now that things had come to this, who could she blame?
Harper pulled away and left without another word.
Emily wanted to say more, but then she saw Caden approaching and had to slink away.
"She'll leave the Lavien Group, won't she?"
Caden said with a low chuckle, watching Emily's retreating figure.
Harper's face remained unchanged, her tone still indifferent.
"No, she won't. She'll do everything she can to stay. At the very least, Alex won't let her leave in disgrace. But whether she can keep her position as Chief Secretary is another matter."
Speaking of the Chief Secretary position, Harper's smile turned cold.
Having someone as incompetent as Emily in that role was a joke, an insult to both her and Travis.
Caden understood her meaning, clicking his tongue lightly, but inwardly, he felt a bit of scorn for Alex.
As a business rival, Alex was astute and capable, undoubtedly a leading figure in the industry.
However, his current irrational decisions regarding key personnel revealed an uncharacteristically emotional side.
Still, Caden hoped Alex would continue being irrational.
The more Alex pushed Harper away, the more likely she would come to him.
He was about to say something else when he saw Alex and Travis exiting the conference room.
His smile deepened, and he deliberately placed a hand on Harper's shoulder.
From this angle, they looked close, their actions intimate.
Harper frowned and was about to push him away when he leaned in, whispering in her ear, "Alex is watching us."
Caden wanted to put on a show for him.
Harper's smile widened, and she even leaned in closer to Caden.
Alex watched for a few seconds, then looked away and walked off.
Since their divorce, the moment he chose Emily, there was nothing left between them.
Her affairs, who she was with, were no longer his concern.
After the meeting, Caden didn't leave the Lavien Group immediately.
Instead, he stayed in Harper's office for a while, talking about his recent experiences abroad.
It seemed he had a lot to say to her.
He looked at her as if he couldn't get enough.
"Harper, what's your secret? How do you keep getting more beautiful?"
He sat across from her, resting his chin in his hands, his eyes filled with deep affection, shimmering like water.
Harper ignored him, her eyes focused straight ahead, her fingers flying over the keyboard as she entered data into her computer.
He sighed deeply, complaining. "Harper, when will you finally notice me? Can't you just look at me seriously for once?"
Harper paused, looking at him with her usual cold gaze.
"Caden, I'm sure your company has plenty of matters waiting for your attention."
He had just returned from abroad and hadn't even gone back to the Elikin Group, coming straight to the Lavien Group for the meeting.
"No matter how important, nothing is more important than you. I haven't seen you in so long; I really missed you. Didn't you miss me even a little?"
Harper was speechless.
She knew he was mostly putting on an act, but his serious demeanor made it seem almost real.
Harper didn't want to waste any more time with him, so she turned her attention back to her computer and resumed working.
Caden didn't leave, just lay there watching her, and before long, he seemed to fall asleep.
Flying back to Majestic City from abroad took several hours; he must have been tired.
Two hours later, Harper finally finished her work.
She checked the time; it was already past seven in the evening.
She yawned and stretched.
"Are you done? Can we go now?"
Caden, still lying there, mumbled as if in a dream.
Harper remembered that during the meeting, he had mentioned going to FusionX Company for dinner together.
So, he had been waiting for her.
"Alright." Harper replied calmly.
Caden's company was focused on developing AI for cars.
Last time, after reviewing the materials, Harper decided to invest in the joint development of this project.
Thus, she instructed Peyton to transfer a monthly research fund to FusionX Company, formally marking their participation in this collaborative venture.
Since Harper's latest data algorithm had shown progress, Caden had planned a dinner with her and the research team to celebrate the partnership.
Harper understood the significance, so she hadn't objected when he mentioned it during the meeting.
Caden straightened up, still looking relaxed.
"Harper, are you finally going to have dinner with me?"
"Let's go." Harper stood up and put on her coat.
Leaving the company, they headed straight to FusionX Company for dinner.
FusionX Company had its own restaurant, specifically for hosting guests and VIPs.
In the private dining room, the research team was gathered around a large round table, chatting merrily..
Harper, with her expertise in programming, quickly got along with everyone.
She was in a good mood tonight, engaging in lively conversation and sipping her juice.
Meanwhile, Caden was being plied with drinks by the group.
He sat beside Harper, holding a wine glass, occasionally sipping the red wine with his thin lips.
He was a bit drunk, his eyes slightly hazy, looking at others with a gaze that seemed infinitely affectionate.
Whenever a female researcher met his gaze, she momentarily lost composure before hastily averting her eyes, her heart pounding wildly.
He was indeed a charming man.
