No Wife, No Life Chapter 169
Alex was utterly confounded.
He stared at Harper, his deep blue eyes now devoid of any light.
He absolutely couldn't believe it.
His voice was low, almost like he was sleep-talking.
"I asked you, you said it was Caden's kid. How could it be mine?"
She looked at him calmly, but tears were streaming down her face.
"Because I know you too well. If you knew that was our child, you might trap me within the Lavien family once again. You would take my child away and ensure I remain forever under your control."
"So Caden and I had already planned it. When the baby was born, we would give them all the love we never received. Everything I had would be theirs. We had it all planned out; it was so wonderful. But we never imagined their biological father would be so cruel."
"He took away his right to be born."
"Alex, are you in pain? Do you regret it?"
Harper bit her lower lip, her voice icy. "I've been drowning in this pain these past few days."
"If all of this was an accident, but it wasn't. It was indeed his biological father who killed him."
"No, no, Harper, you're lying to me; you're getting back at me." Alex couldn't accept any of it, his voice trembling for the first time.
That child was supposed to be Caden's; how could it be his?
"The child is Caden's; it can't be mine." He clenched his fists, his eyes red, unable to admit the truth.
"You don't remember, before our divorce, I never met Caden. The child was conceived a month before our divorce, so tell me, if the child isn't yours, whose is it? You forgot that night, you drank excessively and slept with me without using contraception, just that once."
He remembered, there was indeed that one time.
He calculated the time; it was indeed a month before the divorce.
Harper lowered his voice and spoke slowly, enunciating each word. "Alex, that is your child."
Harper laid the truth bare before him.
Harper thought, 'Alex, you ought to feel heartbroken and in pain; this is exactly what you deserve.'
Sure enough, Alex couldn't handle it. He almost couldn't stop shaking his head, his eyes filled with pain.
Unconsciously, he clenched his fists, his eyes bloodshot.
Suddenly, he picked up the phone and called Frank right in front of her.
Others might not know, but Frank definitely did.
Soon, he got the definite answer.
Without a doubt, the child was his.
The phone slipped from his hand, crashing to the floor.
He could barely stand, his whole body trembling. "It really is mine."
Why wasn't it Caden's; why did it have to be mine? How could he be my child?
If he was his child, then what was everything he did for?
Harper stared at him, a smile forming on her lips.
She said, "Yes, he was your child."
"You personally designed the death of your own baby."
"You, the murderer, killed your own baby."
She repeated it over and over, deliberately hurting him.
She wanted to see him suffer to the point of utter despair.
She indeed saw it.
Alex was truly in pain. He clenched his fists, his eyes red, almost kneeling on the cold floor as he held her hand. "Harper, it's okay, we can still have more kids."
His voice was hoarse. "Harper, you gotta understand, Caden's already a wreck. You even can't find him now, and FusionX Company won't let you off easy. You should come back to the Lavien Group."
"You can still be my wife, and you can have the secretary position too. Come back to me; we can go back to how things were, like nothing ever happened."
"As for kids, we can have as many as you want."
"Just come back." His voice had a hint of desperation.
Even if he admitted he had destroyed his own child, Harper was still here.
As long as Harper came back to him, they could still have more kids.
Harper looked down at her hand, tightly held by Alex, his grip so strong the veins on the back of his hand stood out.
Harper yanked her hand back and, with all her strength, slapped Alex across the face.
The sharp sound echoed through the room.
"That might have been my only child."
Harper's eyelashes trembled.
"Didn't Frank tell you? My health isn't good, so that might have been my only child. I won't have any more kids."
Harper saw the broken look in his eyes and finally took out the documents she had prepared long ago.
"Take a look." She handed the documents to him.
"My medicine was tampered with. I won't have any more kids. And you know exactly who caused all this."
Those drugs were all administered on Emily's orders, all because he mentioned that Harper was carrying his child. Emily, harboring deep resentment, enlisted someone to add substances to Harper's medicine with the intent to cause her harm.
He had only wanted Emily to find a way to get rid of the baby, he never thought Emily would do something like this.
Alex's eyes flickered, his grip tightening, crumpling the documents.
"It doesn't matter, Harper; it's okay if we don't have kids."
His voice was deep. "The Lavien family still has Kaitlyn; we can adopt Kaitlyn's child."
"As long as you come back to me."
As long as Harper was willing to come back to him, he could overlook everything.
He just wanted everything to get back on track.
Harper looked at him calmly. "I am Caden's lover."
"He's already a cripple!" Alex almost gritted his teeth as he said it.
He was already in such a state of ruin, while he himself remained perfectly fine. Why did she need to be with that wretched Caden?
"Harper, are you really crazy?"
Harper lowered her eyes. "Yes, from the day he got hurt, I went crazy."
"Alex, I will never belong to you again."
Before she finished speaking, Alex had already pinned her down. His lips pressed against hers, kissing her forcefully and wantonly.
He didn't want to hear Caden's name from her mouth again.
She was his; she should never have belonged to Caden.
Harper used all her strength to push him away, but her body was too weak, she couldn't move Alex at all.
She bit down hard on the tip of Alex's tongue, tasting the metallic tang of blood in her mouth, but he still did not release her. Only when the blood's taste grew stronger, and Harper could hardly breathe, did he finally let her go.
