No Wife, No Life Chapter 75
Harper felt a chill in her heart.
So, Alex only showed this much concern when Emily was sick.
During these five years, she had also fallen ill, but Alex had not tended to her a single time.
Emily glanced at Harper, a hint of smugness in her eyes.
Harper opened the car door and got out coldly.
The door closed quickly, and the car sped away.
Harper stood in the pouring rain, instantly soaked to the skin.
She couldn't help but shiver and sigh at how the wind on a rainy night felt so chilling and bleak.
Alex's mansion was just ahead, but she didn't want to go there.
What would be the point of going back now?
She was already someone insignificant to Alex.
She stood in a corner by the street, took out her phone, and intended to call for a cab.
However, she waited for a long time, and not a single car arrived.
Badly, in such weather and at this desolate location, no taxi would be willing to come.
The rain grew heavier, stinging her body.
She felt a sharp pain in her lower abdomen.
Unable to hold on any longer, she squatted down and dialed Frank's number.
"Frank, can you come pick me up?"
She only said one sentence, without giving much explanation.
Frank simply replied with a calm "Okay," and asked her to send her location.
Harper sent the location and then hung up.
She had prepared an umbrella when she left work, but Alex had taken it earlier.
The wind howled, cutting through her bones with its chill.
She felt the chill all over her body.
About ten minutes later, a car sped up and stopped beside her.
Frank got out.
Harper tried to stand up but found her body stiff and trembling all over.
Without a word, Frank stepped forward, picked her up, and placed her in the car.
She couldn't stop shaking.
Frank's face was grim.
He took off his coat and covered her with it, then turned the heater on full blast.
The warm air hit her face, and she finally started to feel a bit better.
Frank asked, "What happened? Where's Alex?"
He knew this was Alex's mansion.
Where had Alex gone, leaving her alone in the rain?
Harper's lips tightened, a cold smile on her face. "Take me home."
Her words seemed to be squeezed out through clenched teeth.
Frank didn't start the car immediately. Instead, he took her hand and checked her pulse.
After a while, he let go and reminded, "You're pregnant. If you don't take care of yourself, what if something happens?"
Fortunately, she had only caught a cold and didn't have any major issues. A cup of hot water would help.
"Harper, I'm warning you seriously, don't let this happen again."
His tone was stern, more like a close friend than a doctor.
"I understand."
Harper's expression softened a bit, and she replied calmly.
Most of the time, she was proud and aloof. Unless it was a critical moment, she rarely let others see her in a vulnerable state.
Frank said nothing more and focused on driving.
With the warm air blowing, she must have been exhausted, as she closed her eyes and fell asleep.
She didn't know how long had passed when she felt the car slowly come to a stop.
She opened her eyes and found they were already at her apartment building.
The rain had stopped, and everything went quiet.
"We're here."
She rubbed her sleepy eyes and spoke softly.
"If you want, you can sleep in the car for the night."
Frank's eyes showed a hint of gentleness.
He was different from Alex.
Alex always gave off a cold, distant vibe, like an emperor high above, with an oppressive aura that made it hard to get close.
Frank was different.
He seemed gentle and approachable, like a breath of fresh spring air.
Harper smiled and handed back his coat. "Thanks."
He frowned. "Go on up. No need to thank me. Remember to have some warm water."
Harper nodded, opened the car door, waved at him, and then headed straight for the elevator.
Watching her disappear, Frank restarted the car and drove away.
For a few days, Caden hadn't contacted Harper.
Harper thought he would stay abroad for a few more days, but unexpectedly, he returned early the next morning and went straight to the Lavien Group from the airport.
On the way back, he had already discussed with Alex and immediately called for a meeting.
It was an urgent meeting, and the attendees were whispering about the meeting's agenda.
Harper printed out the materials Caden brought and distributed them.
When she handed them to Emily, she noticed Emily's fingers trembling.
She was scared.
Today would determine whether Emily was successful or not.
For others, this was just another meeting, no different from any other.
But for Emily, it was the most important turning point in her life so far.
Harper stopped looking at Emily, put down the documents, and turned to leave.
As she was about to leave, Emily grabbed her wrist tightly.
"What's the matter?"
Harper paused, looking down at her with an unusually cold tone.
"You're waiting to see me fail, aren't you?"
Emily bit her lower lip, her eyes cold as she stared at Harper, as if judging a criminal.
"I'm telling you, this time the mistake is yours, or it's Caden's, but it's definitely not mine." Emily's tone was harsh.
Harper asked, "Then why are you scared?"
"Why would I be scared? I'm excited; I'm thrilled. I'm about to become part of the Lavien Group's leadership, something you'll never achieve in your lifetime."
For some reason, her voice grew louder, almost like a provocation.
"Then you're really impressive."
Harper's tone remained indifferent as she walked away.
She truly didn't care about Emily.
Her expression was always cold, completely ignoring her.
Emily felt a void in her heart.
All her life, she had been opposing Harper, seeing her as her biggest enemy.
But Harper seemed to never take her seriously.
It felt like she wasn't even a match for Harper. No, she wasn't worthy of being Harper's opponent!
This made her feel powerless and humiliated.
The more Harper acted this way, the more Emily wanted to prove herself, to show she was capable, to show she could stand alongside Harper.
But could she really do it?
If the collaboration with Luminary Innovations Inc. failed, she would leave the Lavien Group, becoming a complete loser.
Thinking of this, her hands started trembling again.
She clenched her fists tightly, trying to suppress the indescribable tension.
Footsteps sounded, and Caden and Alex walked into the conference room.
The whispering colleagues immediately sat up straight, holding their breath as they watched the two men.
The meeting included not only people from the Lavien Group but also from the Elikin Group.
Since the meeting was held at the Lavien Group, Alex naturally took the main seat.
Harper sat to Alex's left, with Travis next to her.
As the CEO of the Elikin Group, Caden was given a seat close to the main one.
However, he declined and stood next to Travis, lazily tapping the chair's armrest. "Mind moving over?"
