No Wife, No Life Chapter 152
Harper's tone was calm and indifferent, like she didn't even get the question, and she just tossed it back to Marvin.
Marvin let out a cold laugh.
"Harper, you are far too clever to not discern my intentions."
His voice was dripping with sarcasm. "Ms. Miller comes from a noble background, with a spotless reputation. Only a woman like that is fit to marry into the Elikin family."
He emphatically stressed "noble background" and "spotless reputation," clearly taking a jab at Harper, insinuating that her own background was not sufficiently unblemished.
"You get it, right? The current head of the Elikin family is Caden. He represents the family's honor, so his wife has to be clean, not a divorced woman with a unborn kid."
A divorced woman seemed to be synonymous with disgrace.
Harper's eyes darkened, but she wasn't fazed by his humiliating words.
She still wore a cool smile. "I believe that's Mr. Elikin's stance, not necessarily Caden's. From the beginning, it was Caden pursuing me, not the other way around."
Marvin was left speechless.
But he didn't give up and kept pushing, "Ms. Orsini, do you think Ms. Miller is beautiful?"
Harper replied, "Of course."
Marvin added, "Besides that, Ms. Miller graduated from a prestigious university abroad with straight A's. What do you think of that?"
For people of their status, attending a prestigious university abroad wasn't hard with enough money and connections, but graduating with straight A's was a sign of a top student.
"Ms. Miller is indeed very accomplished," Harper admitted.
"And Ms. Miller is the niece of the CEO of the Miller Group. What do you think of that background?"
Harper nodded, "Very impressive."
From this perspective, whether it was her background, looks, or abilities, Elsie was an excellent choice.
Marvin said, "So, a clean young lady like her is more suitable to be Caden's wife."
"Ms. Orsini, no matter how many years pass, if anyone digs up your past with Mr. Lavien, Caden will be ridiculed. Have you thought about that, Ms. Orsini?"
No matter how outstanding Harper was, she couldn't escape the fate of being a divorced woman.
The Elikin family couldn't afford to lose face because of this.
Thinking of this, Marvin's face darkened. He picked up his teacup and slammed it on the table, making a loud noise as if to demonstrate his point.
"Ms. Orsini, if you truly care about Caden, you should have the self-awareness to break up with him early, rather than letting him be ridiculed in the future."
"Only if you break up can the Elikin family and the Miller family form an alliance and maximize benefits."
Harper seemed to be moved. She looked at the photo of Elsie in the documents and spoke softly, "What does Elsie think? Is she willing to marry?"
At this, Marvin became even more smug. "Of course, Ms. Miller has liked Caden since they were in college. In fact, she proposed this marriage."
"Since Ms. Miller has agreed, how could the Elikin family refuse? So, we must ask Ms. Orsini to step aside."
His words sounded polite, but he was essentially telling her to get lost.
Harper put down the documents and looked up at him, "Sorry, Mr. Elikin, I can't agree to your request. Caden and I are together by mutual decision. If he wants to break up, he can tell me himself. If he agrees to break up, I'll leave immediately without a second's delay."
If she left now, what would that mean?
That she was scared off by Marvin?
Or admitting she was unclean and unworthy of entering the Elikin family?
No, she couldn't do that.
Marvin was about to say something when a familiar voice came from outside the door. "Harper, your words are really heartbreaking."
The door swung open, and Caden strode in. He looked at Harper, his tone calm.
"You know I would never agree to break up. It clearly took me so long to win you over."
He walked up to Harper, took off his coat, and draped it over her lap. "Are you cold?"
Brfore his meeting ended, he got a call from the hospital saying Harper had been taken by the Elikin family. He hurriedly ended the meeting and rushed back to the Elikin Manor.
As soon as he entered, he felt the room was a bit cold.
Marvin was someone who couldn't tolerate heat, so the air conditioning in his room was always set to very low temperatures.
Standing up, Caden grabbed the remote from the table and turned off the air conditioning.
From the moment he entered, he hadn't said a word to Marvin, as if Marvin didn't exist.
In front of Harper, Caden treated him this way, making Marvin's face turn pale with anger.
He pointed at Caden's nose and cursed, "You brat! Did I tell you to turn it off? Turn it back on."
Caden looked at Marvin, his tone cold, "Did you ask for my permission to meet with Harper like this?"
Caden's lips curled into a clear smile, his eyes full of provocation.
"Besides, you calling me a brat, is this the first day you realized it? "Aren't you just a scoundrel yourself? Isn't having a scoundrel son like me exactly what you deserve?"
Marvin didn't like Caden, partly because he had little affection for Caden's mother, and partly because Caden's temperament was infuriating. He always went against Marvin, and nine out of ten things he said were sarcastic.
Just like now, he came back and turned off the air conditioning, for what?
Just because Harper was cold?
Now Caden pampered her to this extent, what place would he have in the Elikin family if she married in?
It was truly infuriating; Caden was nothing but a useless troublemaker.
Marvin kept patting his chest, as if he was about to have a heart attack from Caden's behavior. "Fine, fine, fine, since you're back, let's clear this up face to face. Show me your stance."
"You know Ms. Miller; she's your junior. She's always had a good impression of you. Now she wants to marry you, what do you think?"
Caden squatted down, holding Harper's hand, his eyes full of her.
"I think this Ms. Miller is an idiot. Doesn't she read the news? I've already stated that my fiancée is Harper. What does Ms. Miller mean by this? Trying to come between us?"
Marvin was even more furious, "You represent not just yourself, but the Elikin family. I'm your father, you have to listen to me. You must marry someone of Ms. Miller's background."
He spoke without any regard for Harper's feelings.
Harper looked down and asked him, "So, who do you choose, me or Ms. Miller?"
Caden chuckled softly, still with a teasing tone, "Are you nervous? Want to hear my answer?"
"Didn't you just say that if I agreed to break up, you'd let go?"
Harper stared at him for a few seconds, not giving him more time, and turned to leave. She never indulged him.
