No Wife, No Life Chapter 278
Mark looked at Jeremy, his voice steady but intense.
"Whether it's her cutting ties with Alex or you getting locked up, none of that is what Kaitlyn wants."
"Kaitlyn just wants things to stay the same, like they are now."
He was genuinely thinking about Kaitlyn's feelings, speaking each word clearly, but Jeremy just couldn't accept it.
Of course, Jeremy cared about Kaitlyn. She was the child he had cherished since she was little.
But he couldn't back down now. After all these years, he was so close to the success. Why should he ruin the plan he had meticulously crafted for so long?
He simply couldn't do it.
"I'll handle this myself. You don't need to get involved. Just take good care of Kaitlyn."
This was the best outcome Jeremy could think of.
If something really happened to him, he wanted someone to stay by Kaitlyn's side to protect her. Clearly, Mark was the best choice and the person he trusted the most.
Most importantly, Mark loved Kaitlyn deeply, so he would never betray or hurt her.
Jeremy had considered the worst-case scenario: either going to prison or being sentenced to death.
If it came to that, he would accept it. He was just worried that Kaitlyn wouldn't be able to handle it if something happened to him.
But now there was Mark, who could take Kaitlyn away.
"Does Dad really have to keep going after Alex?"
By now, Mark couldn't fathom. They were clearly family, so why did Jeremy hate Alex so much?
"You don't get it. This is between me and his father. It's my obsession."
Jeremy's eyes darkened, filled with an unhidden hatred.
It was a grudge from his generation.
Initially, Jeremy and Alex's father, Baldric Lavien, had a great relationship. Baldric treated him like Alex now treated Kaitlyn, with indulgent affection.
Until their teenage years, when Jeremy met Alyssa Ramirez.
Alyssa was the sister of Alex's mother, Allison Ramirez. The first time he saw Alyssa, he fell in love with her, but Alyssa liked his older brother, Baldric.
At that time, Baldric already had Alex and was deeply in love with Allison, but Alyssa also fancied him.
Jeremy thought Baldric was indeed excellent, but he still felt resentment in his heart.
A few years later, Alyssa had a child. She insisted it was Baldric's. She said she had to marry Baldric and demanded that he divorce her sister.
The Lavien family was thrown into chaos because of Alyssa, but to protect the family's reputation, the matter was kept quiet.
No one listened to Baldric's explanations until Alyssa died in childbirth after giving birth to a baby girl.
The Lavien family did a paternity test on the child, which showed no relation to the Lavien family.
It turned out that Alyssa had invited Baldric to a movie, but he didn't go. Later, she went to a bar, got drugged, and had sex with someone. To this day, no one knew who the father was.
Jeremy hated Baldric. He hated him for not going to the movie. If he had gone, Alyssa wouldn't have been violated or died in childbirth.
Later, he attended Alyssa's funeral, his eyes filled with hatred for Baldric.
The Ramirez family also hated Alyssa for disgracing the family and refused to bury her in the family cemetery. Jeremy kept the matter quiet, arranging for Alyssa to be laid to rest in the Lavien family cemetery and personally carving her tombstone.
And the baby girl Alyssa gave birth to became his daughter.
The more he loved Alyssa, the more he hated Baldric.
He initially wanted to dislike the child, but she looked so much like Alyssa that he couldn't bear to loathe her. Seeing her face reminded him of Alyssa.
So, he named her Kaitlyn.
He protected Kaitlyn well, loving and spoiling her, not wanting her to be entangled in the grudges of the previous generation. Despite the absence of any blood relation between them, in his eyes, Kaitlyn remained his singular, most treasured daughter whom he adored above all else.
But his hatred for Baldric never ceased.
He hated not only Baldric but also Allison.
He hated them both, and even their deaths couldn't ease his hatred.
That was why he wanted to take over the Lavien Group, so his daughter could inherit it, as if Alyssa had entered the Lavien family and gained the Lavien Group.
Of course, he never told Kaitlyn or Mark about this. He didn't want anyone to speak ill of Alyssa.
So he wouldn't back down or abandon his plan.
Mark couldn't persuade Jeremy, so he could only promise to protect Kaitlyn.
Jeremy took a deep breath and closed his eyes slightly. "Alright, you can go now. I'll handle things myself from now on."As for Mark, he needed to protect Kaitlyn cleanly and love her purely.
Mark couldn't understand his feelings but followed his orders and left the study.
The next day, Mark took Kaitlyn and left the Lavien Mansion.
After they left, Jeremy called Emily, asking her to come over.
Of course, he knew Emily was both foolish and malicious, but as long as she was paid enough, she would do anything.
Jeremy chose a very secretive place, his villa in the suburbs.
Emily, knowing she was meeting Jeremy, dressed up and arrived twenty minutes early.
But upon seeing Jeremy, Emily felt a chill run through her, trembling uncontrollably.
She felt Jeremy's eyes were like a snake's, cold and terrifying, making her hair stand on end.
Despite this, she tried to control her fear, putting on a gentle smile.
Jeremy glanced at her and spoke calmly, "Are you afraid of me?"
"No." She said, somewhat guiltily.
"Don't bother acting. I know you. I know you're a shameless person."Though he was in a wheelchair, he didn't seem at a disadvantage. Instead, he exuded a powerful sense of oppression.
Emily was flustered, raising her hand to smooth her hair, her eyes shifting.
Jeremy asked, "I heard you studied art design?"
Emily stiffly nodded, not understanding why he was asking.
Jeremy continued, "There's a competition coming up. I need you to participate. I'll give you a design, and you will use it for the competition."
Emily was confused but didn't dare ask, though she had a bad feeling.
If it were Mark, she might dare to ask something, but facing Jeremy, she didn't dare say a word.
"Do I have to participate in this competition?"
After a long pause, she asked, her voice trembling.
Jeremy avoided her gaze and remarked dispassionately, "You must participate in this competition. You need not concern yourself with the rationale behind it; simply remember that once you receive the design drawings I provide, regardless of who inquires, you must insist that the designs are entirely your own creation."
