Fortunately, Harper's reaction didn't let Caden down.

Harper chose him over Alvina's manuscript.

"Alex!"

Harper lowered her eyes and let out a soft laugh.

"Of course, I know he's pretending. I know Caden better than you do."

She paused and then asked, "But so what? If Caden hurts himself to make me feel pain, who cares? He's the one getting hurt, not me."

Her tone was calm, but there was a hint of cruelty in it.

Harper knew why Alex had come to see her. He wanted to tell her that everything Caden did had a purpose, that he was manipulating Harper.

Or maybe Caden was just a liar.

In that sense, Caden was no different from Alex.

But Harper understood there was a big difference.

Alex treated Harper with cold indifference, bordering on cruelty, inflicting genuine pain upon her.

But Caden?

Caden's wounds were self-inflicted. He never caused Harper harm; on the contrary, he went out of his way to shield her from danger.

This was the fundamental distinction between the two men.

At first, Harper didn't see it, but after meeting Caden's assistant, she knew he was acting.

So, she decided to play along, even if it meant he might lose his mind.

But with Herbert, she was serious.

Since Herbert dared to take Jeremy's job and cause an accident to hurt Caden, he had to pay the price.

That was why Harper had decided to swap the manuscript for a fake one later on.

Both of them were scheming, understanding each other without saying it out loud.

Besides, what did any of this have to do with them?

If it weren't for Jeremy's greed and ruthlessness, Caden wouldn't have put on this act.

Jeremy's eyes darkened, and his tone grew heavier. "Harper, with your cunning, you can't outplay him."

Harper pressed her lips together and spoke softly, "Maybe, but right now, I see that he won't hurt me. As for who outplays whom, we'll see."

She chuckled and asked, "How do you know this isn't just our way of having fun?"

Fun?

She actually used that word.

Alex was speechless.

Harper continued, "Besides, Caden lying and hurting himself has nothing to do with me. If I fall in love with him later, maybe I'll be sad, but for now..."

She laughed lightly. "He's hurting his own body. He's the one in pain, not me."

Her tone was icy.

Even though she knew she didn't really feel that way, she still said it. She didn't want to show weakness in front of him, to let him see that she was vulnerable.

She knew well that Alex never sympathized with emotionally fragile people.

The night breeze blew, but it wasn't too cold.

Alex looked at her, feeling that the person in front of him was becoming more and more unfamiliar.

"Harper, I feel like I've never really seen you clearly."

Harper retorted, "And what about me? We both haven't seen through each other."

"Since we're already divorced, why are you questioning me now?"

Harper seemed to have finished speaking.

She turned and nodded to Jacob in the car.

Following her gaze, Alex looked over.

Jacob sat in the car, relaxed and at ease.

He had a handsome face, with a pair of gold-rimmed glasses on his nose, looking refined and cultured.

Alex knew him, Jacob Harris, the CEO of HoloSphere Technologies.

In recent years, Jacob had been expanding his business abroad and had only recently moved the main company back to Majestic City.

At this rate, HoloSphere Technologies would soon be among the top companies in the country.

HoloSphere Technologies was a rising star, with immense potential.

Jacob was a true young talent.

"You're not worried about Caden because you have him?"

Alex really couldn't understand Harper anymore. He was starting to suspect that Harper and Jacob had a close relationship.

Harper felt a chill, but her expression remained calm.

"Alex, in your eyes, does being close to a man mean we must have a relationship?"

She couldn't understand it. Did he really see her as someone who relied on men to climb higher?

Was she that shallow?

She smiled faintly. "If that's the case, you have a lot of people to suspect. You'd have to suspect Frank, Travis, even Quinn, and many more."

She felt a bit of sadness.

After all these years together, he still didn't understand her at all.

"I'm sorry, it's all my fault."

Surprisingly, he admitted his mistake.

Harper looked at him, her gaze meaningful. "It is your fault."

She sighed. "Mr. Lavien, I thought after what happened, you wouldn't come to see me again."

That day at the Moonlight House hot springs, he had forced himself on her. If Caden hadn't stopped him in time, who knows what would have happened.

"I think unless it's for work, you don't need to see me again. What happens between Caden and me has nothing to do with you anymore."

She still had a smile on her face, but her words were cold, as if she wanted to sever all ties between them.

They had no relationship anymore, no connection at all.

Alex looked at Harper in the wind, smiling calmly, as if everything between them had really blown away with the wind.

His throat felt tight, and after a while, he responded coolly.

He didn't even look at Jacob and turned to leave.

She watched him go, his figure looking somewhat defeated.

"Harper, do you still like him?"

After Alex's car drove away, Jacob's voice sounded in her ear.

Harper stood there, still smiling, but her heart felt cold and sad.

Her eyes reddened, and tears fell.

Was she crying?

At some point, Jacob had walked over.

"Jacob!"

Harper called softly, her voice hoarse.
