No Wife, No Life Chapter 146
Alex felt a sudden wave of dizziness and his body swayed.
He gripped Harper's wrist so tightly it left bruises.
Harper felt like her bones were about to snap.
His eyes were locked on her, with a fierce intensity radiating from his gaze.
If the child was Caden's, then what did that make him?
Five years of marriage, and it turned out he was just a joke.
The Harper standing in front of him was no longer the woman he remembered.
"Harper, why?"
Why what? Why betray him? But what else could she say? Did she have any other choice?
From the day they got married, he had made it clear they wouldn't have children.
She had once cautiously asked him what would happen if she accidentally got pregnant.
How had he responded?
Without even looking up, he had coldly said, "Get rid of it."
To him, the child would only become a hindrance. She was merely his outlet for frustration. Between them, there was no love, no emotion, and certainly no future.
She had thought about telling him the truth. But if she did, he might force her to get an abortion.
If she secretly had the child, it would be taken to the Lavien Mansion to be raised, and she would be forever entangled with the Lavien family.
She didn't want that.
So she had resolutely told him the child was Caden's.
She lifted her head, her gaze cold as she stared at him. "Why? You dare ask me why? Do you think I'm the one who betrayed this relationship?"
A mocking smile appeared on her lips.
"You are the betrayer, aren't you? On our wedding day, you said you would never love me, that I was free to be with anyone as long as it wasn't discovered and didn't bring shame to the Lavien family. We wouldn't interfere with each other's lives."
"I couldn't question your private life, and you couldn't question my feelings. That was our agreement. You told me you had another woman in your heart, so you wouldn't love me. So I found Caden. Now, what right do you have to question me?"
It was all his doing.
During those years, even when they were intimate, she had thought he was thinking of another woman.
He had never cherished her. His actions were always rough, as if she were just a tool.
And now, he was questioning why.
Harper said, "You have Emily; I have Caden. It's even, isn't it?"He looked at the smile on her lips, feeling colder than ever.
If she had been with Caden before the divorce, then he would appear not just as a joke, but as a disgrace!
If she had been with Caden before the divorce, then he would be forever shamed.
"Harper, so this is your love for me. It's laughable."
Finally, he let go of her hand, his proud lips curling up, maintaining his pride despite the bitterness.
At that moment, Emily emerged from a hospital room, seeing Alex and Harper standing close together. She noticed the deeper emotion in Alex's eyes as he looked at Harper.
Jealousy surged within her, and she almost rushed over."Alex, the test results are out. Let's go." She forced a bright smile, linking her arm with Alex's, even warmly greeting Harper.
"Harper, you're here too. What a coincidence. Dad's in the hospital, and I need to take care of him. I'll leave with Alex first."
Harper remained expressionless, not even lifting her eyelids, completely ignoring her.
As she turned, Emily caught sight of the pregnancy report, her pupils dilating in shock.
She felt her heart stop, almost unable to breathe.
Harper was pregnant! Whose child was it, Alex's?
If it was Alex's, would they get back together?
If it was Alex's, he would never let Harper go.
Her mind was in chaos, her steps unsteady.
"Did you see it?" Alex asked coldly.
Emily trembled all over, her expression stiff. "Alex, would you get back together with Harper because of this child?"
She was probing.
Alex didn't answer, just glanced at her.
From that look, Emily got her answer. He would; of course he would.
In an instant, she understood. This child absolutely couldn't stay.
Leaving the hospital, Emily couldn't wait to call her mother. "Mom, you have to help me this time. Whether I can marry Alex depends on this."
Earlier at Serenity Health Center, she had noticed Harper still taking medication.
If she could add something harmful to the medicine, it would kill the child.
Her mother, Sable, was doing yoga when she heard her daughter's words and instinctively frowned, finding a quiet place to ask, "What are you up to now?"
Years ago, she had been with Brad and had Emily.
She had hoped to marry Brad and change her fate.
Unexpectedly, Brad didn't want to marry her at all; he only had Alvina in his heart.
Later, Sable had set her sights on an internist, who now worked at Serenity Health Center.
But Sable knew that whenever Emily called, it was never good news, so she felt uneasy.
Emily said, "I want your husband to help me."
This time, involving her husband again, Sable's face darkened further. "What exactly do you want?"
"Mom, I'm telling you, Harper is pregnant. She's carrying Alex's child!"
Emily was no longer calm, her tone filled with anger and shame. "I've worked so hard, not to give way to Harper. That child can't stay. With that child, I'll never become Alex's wife."
Emily's voice suddenly took on a cruel edge. "Mom, only you can help me now. If I can marry into the Lavien family, if I can become Alex's real wife, you'll be Alex's mother-in-law. I can give you anything you want, so you have to help me now."
Though her words were tempting, Sable still didn't understand how she could help Emily.
Before she could ask, Emily continued, "Mom, listen. Harper is taking medication prescribed by Frank. She left in a hurry today and didn't bring it. Have your husband add a few doses to the medicine to cause her natural miscarriage. Don't worry; your husband won't be in danger."
She had already thought it through. This was the only way to ensure Harper's child wouldn't survive.
Her eyes turned cold, her tone even more sinister. "Is there a kind that, after drinking it, causes the body to gradually weaken and all organs to progressively fail?"
She asked in a low voice. She even wanted Harper dead.
