No Wife, No Life Chapter 277
Kaitlyn looked at her father sitting in the wheelchair. His hair was graying at the temples, and he seemed to have aged significantly.
She couldn't bring herself to argue loudly with him; this was the father who had loved her for so many years.
She let go of Mark's hand and walked step by step toward Jeremy.
She knelt down, gently holding Jeremy's hand, fighting back the bitterness in her heart, and softly said, "Dad, I know everything."
Her words made Jeremy's heart sink. What did she know?
For a moment, Jeremy was bewildered. He seemed unsure how to respond to his daughter, opening his mouth but unable to say anything.
Eventually, his gaze slowly fell on Mark, filled with deep meaning but more with pressure and questioning.
Noticing his gaze, Kaitlyn pursed her lips. "Dad, it wasn't Mark who told me."
"I wanted to see Mark, so I asked his assistant. You know his assistant wouldn't hide anything from me, so I caught Mark meeting with Emily, and Emily told me the truth."
Kaitlyn understood her father's feelings toward Mark.
He never liked Mark much and never treated him as his real son. He kept Mark around just to find her a playmate, and as Mark grew up, he merely regarded Mark as a compliant pawn.
She might not have understood this as a child, but now she was grown up enough to see it clearly.
"Dad, I've taken enough from the Lavien family. Please, don't be so fixated on the Lavien family anymore, okay?"
She looked at Jeremy without blinking, waiting quietly for his response.
In the past, her father would always agree with her. He never refused any request she made.
The smile on Jeremy's face had long since frozen. He moved his fingers involuntarily, stroking his daughter's hair, his voice as gentle as ever.
"Kaitlyn, why do you think this way?"
"We're all part of the Lavien family. You're just as capable as Alex. If Alex can inherit the Lavien Group, you have the same right to inherit it, don't you?"
Kaitlyn shook her head. "It's not like that. The Lavien Group was saved by Alex's father, so it rightfully belongs to Alex."
Jeremy sighed helplessly.
"Kaitlyn, you must have already seen the current situation of the Lavien Group. FusionX Company, which was once an ally, has become its competitor. HoloSphere Technologies is even less likely to collaborate with the Lavien Group, and our longstanding rivals are all keeping a vigilant eye on us. The Lavien Group currently finds itself besieged from all sides, and this dire situation is entirely attributable to Alex's actions."
"If we had a different leader, if you were the president of the Lavien Group, Harper might not continue targeting the Lavien Group. I'm not trying to take the Lavien Group; I'm trying to save it."
Jeremy's ability to argue was indeed strong.
But Kaitlyn was no longer the little girl she once was; such words could no longer deceive her.
Her eyes sparkled as she stared at her father, who continued to make excuses.
"Dad, you started going after Alex a long time ago, back when Alex hadn't made any mistakes, right?"
Jeremy stopped smiling.
Kaitlyn said, "Even if Alex has made mistakes now, there might still be a chance to make amends, rather than us coveting his assets. We're family, not enemies."
She directly exposed Jeremy's lies mercilessly.
"Dad, please stop fixating on the Lavien Group, okay?"
Kaitlyn's eyes were shining.
"Alex means a lot to me, and so do you, Dad. I really don't want my most cherished family members to be at odds with each other."
"I've already talked to Mark, and he's agreed to help me start a new business. This is the best choice."
"Dad, please, give up your original plan, okay?"
Jeremy's face was expressionless. He looked at his innocent daughter, feeling a bit dazed.
After a long time, he finally struggled to utter a single word, "Okay."
Mark almost thought he had misheard.
He felt that things weren't that simple, but he couldn't say this to Kaitlyn.
Kaitlyn believed it, because in her heart, Jeremy had never lied to her.
She was all smiles, glad that she had resolved the family issue. She cuddled up to Jeremy, talking about recent joyful events.Mark's gaze fell on her, filled with deep affection.
Kaitlyn was facing away from him, buried in Jeremy's embrace, so she couldn't see the exchange of glances between them.
Jeremy's gaze was cold as he looked at Mark, devoid of any emotion.
With just one look, Mark knew Jeremy was lying to her.
He wouldn't abandon his plan.
Kaitlyn was thrilled, staying at the Lavien Mansion for dinner.
After dinner, she seemed a bit tired and fell asleep as soon as her head hit the pillow.
Mark tucked her in before leaving her room.
At that moment, he noticed the study door was open.
Jeremy was waiting for him.
Mark walked in without hesitation.
Jeremy seemed to be admiring a painting, not looking up even when he heard footsteps, his gaze fixed on the newly acquired artwork.
Mark stood quietly by, waiting for Jeremy's questions.
The room was silent, the ticking of the clock on the wall creating a sense of unease.
After a long time, Mark finally heard Jeremy speak in a deep voice, "What do you think about what Kaitlyn said?"
He was waiting for Mark's opinion.
Jeremy finally looked up, their eyes meeting.
His gaze was cold, sending a shiver down Mark's spine.
"Dad, you know I'll listen to whatever Kaitlyn says."
"So you really intend for me to abandon my plan? After all these years of preparation, just give up so easily? Impossible! Soon, my Kaitlyn will have the Lavien Group. The plan is about to succeed."
His voice was icy.
"Dad, Kaitlyn loves you!"
Mark's words made Jeremy pause, but he continued, "She loves you, and she loves Alex too."
"You both are the most important people to her. She doesn't want either of you to get hurt."
Dad, all you've ever wanted is to take over the Lavien Group. But have you ever considered that by constantly targeting Alex, the end result could be mutually destructive for both of you."
"Alex isn't an ordinary person. He's meticulous and decisive in everything he does."
"Dad, you should know that all the things you've done have been cleaned up by him. Have you considered that he might have kept evidence of your crimes? If you keep pushing Alex, when things finally fall apart, Alex might use that evidence against you. That wouldn't be a good outcome for you."
"Any form of punishment would be unacceptable to Kaitlyn."
"Even if you finally win and he doesn't use the evidence, what would happen to him? Kaitlyn cares about the family bond. If you destroy everything, would Alex still recognize her as his sister?"
