No Wife, No Life Chapter 121
Dennis's face was stern, but he didn't argue back.
He just kept his head down, eyes fixed on his nails, lost in thought.
Caden continued, almost like he was talking to himself. "Dennis, you're smart. You should be able to figure out why Harper had to send you away."
Dennis and Brad weren't related by blood; Dennis was just a reminder of Alvina's betrayal.
If Dennis had stayed at The Orsini Villa back then, he probably wouldn't have survived.
Brad would tortured him to death.
He treated Harper terribly, despite the fact that she was his own flesh and blood.
Just because Brad didn't like her, Harper suffered as much as Dennis did over the years.
What Harper could endure, Dennis might not have been able to.
So sending Dennis away was a desperate measure.
It was the only way he could live a normal, peaceful life, which was also Alvina's wish.
Dennis should have understood this if he had contemplated it carefully.
"Your mom left you with Harper the year she had her accident. But you should realized that Harper was around nine years old at the time. Do you think a kid that age could take care of a baby? She made a choice for you, hoping you wouldn't have to suffer the same pain she did. Was she wrong for that?"
He stubbed out his cigarette and took a deep breath. "Dennis, look at me."
Suddenly, his tone became heavy, carrying an undeniable pressure.
Dennis obediently lifted his head, meeting Caden's gaze without flinching.
Caden's eyes were narrow and bright, shining with intensity.
"If you're a man, you should understand how hard it's been for her all these years. So don't blame her for your suffering; she hasn't had it much easier than you."
"Do you know why Harper never completely left the Orsini family all these years? Because you're her weakness. They used you to control her."
"As your elder sister, she has always strived to protect you to the best of her ability. But what about you? Have you ever considered her feelings? What right do you have to blame her?"
"She is under no obligation to take care of you. If you were truly a man, you would shoulder more responsibility and share the burden with her, instead of indulging in self-pity."
He stared at Dennis, each word piercing Dennis's heart like a needle. "Dennis, she doesn't owe you anything. She helped you because she's kind and loyal, but she has her own life too."
Caden stood up, slowly walking over and looking down at him. "Dennis, you don't have to understand her, but please don't hurt her anymore."
Dennis's hands twisted together, conflicted and struggling.
Caden was right. Harper had done enough for him.
"I understand," he finally said quietly.
The next morning, Harper woke up to bright daylight. She had actually slept well for once.
As her consciousness slowly returned, she remembered what had happened the night before.
She thought of Dennis, the brother she had searched for years, who had been so close all along.
Everything was so chaotic; she needed to clear her thoughts.
Suddenly, she remembered Caden. The man who had been there during her darkest moments was now gone, likely back at the hospital.
The villa was quiet; Dennis must have gone out.
She didn't want to disturb him too much now, wanting to give him time to accept everything.
With nothing else to do, she decided to visit Caden at Serenity Health Center.
Last night, she had only given him a simple bandage. She wondered how he was doing now.
She got out of bed, quickly freshened up, and drove to Serenity Health Center.
Since the villa was quite far from the center, it was almost noon by the time she arrived.
She hadn't brought any food, so she ordered some chicken soup to be delivered to Caden's ward.
When she opened the door to the hospital room, she was surprised to see Emily.
Emily was sitting in a chair by the bed, chatting with Caden with a smile.
"Mr. Elikin, you might not be aware, but I'm back at the Lavien Group as Mr. Lavien's secretary. But how did you end up so hurt? Looks like your girlfriend hasn't been much of a good luck charm, has she?"
Her implication was clear: Harper was a source of trouble.
"And did you know she has a brother? Her brother is even more ridiculous. He's the child of Harper's mother and another man."
Emily's smile was full of mockery.
Harper was supposed to be a lady of the Orsini family, but what did that matter now? Her brother was no different from Emily, both illegitimate children.
That was Emily's purpose today; he wanted to taunt Harper and make Caden despise her. Once Harper lost Caden's protection, what would she be?
Emily was here to laugh at Harper.
Moreover, she had returned to the Lavien Group. She mocked Harper's brother Dennis and flaunted her current status.
No matter what, Emily could return to the Lavien Group because Alex loved her. This was something Harper could never achieve.
Even if Alex didn't grant her significant authority, her status remained intact, something Harper could never hope to rival.
At that moment, she glanced up and saw Harper, her smug and mocking smile growing even more pronounced. "Did you find your illegitimate brother?"
Emily knew what had happened last night, so she deliberately provoked her.
She hated the label of an illegitimate child, but now Harper's brother was one too. It was kind of her own humiliation of herself.
Harper's face was cold. She placed the chicken soup on the table and smiled lightly.
"Emily, I really don't understand what you're so proud of. Do you think you can compare to Dennis? That's laughable."
Her eyes were cold, filled with an undeniable chill.
"What are you? You're just a shameless bitch of Brad and some bar girl."
Emily's face changed, and she jumped up from her chair, seething with anger. "Harper, what are you so proud of? Dennis is just an unwanted bastard. Your mother wasn't any better."
Now, Dennis was a weapon to attack Harper.
Caden, who had been silent, held Harper's hand and gently shook his head. "Harper, don't get angry."
Harper smiled coldly. "I'm not angry. I'm just looking at a stupid donkey."
Her eyes were indifferent, flashing with a cold light.
"Emily, you better get this straight. You're the illegitimate child of Brad and another woman, but Dennis isn't. My mother had already divorced Brad when she had Dennis. They were true love, fair and square."
Her words were firm, leaving Emily speechless.
