No Wife, No Life Chapter 34
She squinted, a smirk tugging at her lips as she stared at Harper.
Harper couldn't hold back any longer and raised her hand, ready to slap her.
Emily shut her eyes, bracing herself for whatever Harper was about to do.
"Do whatever you want."
Harper sneered and was ready to slap her hard across the face.
This time, she put all her strength into it, determined to teach Emily a lesson she wouldn't forget.
She wanted Emily to remember: don't go after things that aren't yours, or you'll get hurt.
Just then, someone grabbed her wrist tightly before her hand landed on Emily's face.
"Haven't you had enough?"
Alex stepped in front of Emily, shielding her.
His expression was stern, and he had this commanding presence that demanded respect.
Of course, Emily was the one he wanted to protect first.
That's why Emily dared to act so arrogantly.
Harper sneered, but her tone stayed calm.
"Mr. Lavien, do you think I'm just making a scene?"
She looked him straight in the eye, her smile growing colder.
"The necklace in her hand is my mother's heirloom."
She spoke slowly, each word seeming to leap from her throat.
Alex was taken aback, slowly releasing her hand.
Harper trembled, pointing at the jewelry box in Emily's arms, her chest heaving slightly.
"That necklace belonged to my mother."
He turned to look at Emily, a shadow passing over his eyes.
Emily's face turned pale, and she quickly waved her hands in explanation. "Alex, I had no idea. How could I have known? I've been abroad all these years. How could I know it was her mother's heirloom?"
She was lying.
Harper almost laughed in anger. For a moment, she felt a sharp pain in her stomach.
How could she not know it was Alvina's heirloom? That's why she put it up for auction, wasn't it?
"Emily, if you love acting so much, why don't you go into show business?" She said coldly.
"I know Harper won't believe anything I say, but I really didn't know. Why would I lie?"
She looked up, pitifully at Alex.
"Alex, you believe me, right? I've only been back in the country for a few days. How could I know all this?"
"I'd like to know how my mother's heirloom ended up being auctioned. Did I do it?" Harper questioned.
Emily lowered her eyes, not saying a word.
Alex, sharp as ever, had already figured it out.
If it was not done by Emily, it was her father, Brad. But at this moment, how could Emily betray her own father?
This was her loyalty, even if she suffered, she wouldn't say a word.
Alex waved his hand dismissively, a bit impatient. "This matter ends here. Don't bring it up again."
He took the box from Emily, his tone leaving no room for argument.
Harper said nothing more, not even looking at them, and turned to leave.
She couldn't wait to get back to The Orsini Villa to check if her mother's belongings were still there.
No matter what, she had to protect those items, as they were the only things left from her mother. Walking out of the hotel lobby, Harper hailed a cab straight to The Orsini Villa.
A servant opened the door, surprised to see Harper.
"Hi, Ms. Harper Orsini, Mr. Orsini and Ms. Emily Orsini are not home."
Having worked at The Orsini Villa for so many years, the servant knew their relationship.
"This is my home. I don't need to wait for them," Harper said bluntly, striding right in.
She knew her mom's stuff was kept in a room on the second floor. Since Alvina passed away, that room had been locked, and only she had the key.
She quickly headed upstairs to the room. She found that the lock had been tampered with, and the door was slightly open. She pushed it open, and a cloud of dust greeted her. She coughed lightly and then flicked on the light.
The room looked just like she remembered. The ivory bed still had the quilt Alvina used. The ivory wardrobe still held Alvina's clothes. The ivory dressing table still had the small box with Alvina's comb. Everything was the same, except Alvina was no longer there.
Harper's eyes reddened, tears threatening to fall. She walked slowly, taking in the familiar room. So many beautiful memories were stored in this room.
"Harper, be happy. Harper, be joyful. Harper, be yourself." Softly, Alvina's voice seemed to echo in her ears.
Harper sat on the bed, unable to hold back her sobs. At this moment, she was no longer the smart, composed Harper of the day, but a lonely child who had lost her protector.
"Are you really here?" At some point, Emily and Brad had entered. Emily looked at her coldly, without a trace of warmth in her eyes.
"The servant said you were here. I was surprised. What, didn't get First Love, and now you're upset?" She smirked mockingly. "Well, you know, I have no choice. Alex loves me and bought it for me."
She glanced around the room, her tone disdainful. "I never cared for these things. What's so great about them? Alex will give me better things."
Harper's eyes turned cold, her sadness fading. She stood up, walked to the dressing table, and opened the jewelry box, only to discover that some pieces were missing.
She turned and her gaze sharp. "How much did you sell them for?"
Brad smirked, indifferent. "Those things are useless, just jinxed."
Harper suddenly felt dizzy, almost fainting, and had to lean on the dressing table, gripping its edge tightly.
After a moment, she felt a bit better. She took a deep breath, her tone serious. "I can give up the house and the company, but I must take my mother's things!" She paused, then emphasized again, "They are mine, left to me by my mother."
She had made the biggest concession. They had taken everything they could, but these few things were the only memories Alvina had left her. She had to keep them!
Emily actually laughed. "What are you thinking? Even if they were her things, they're still part of the estate. How can you just take them?"
Emily was shameless! Harper felt a surge of anger in her chest. "What do you want?"
Emily didn't look at her, instead examining her long fingers, her voice light. "As long as you sign the divorce papers, you can take all her things."
So that's what they wanted. Harper felt a pang in her heart. After all, Alex didn't love her. Why should she hold on? In that case, she might as well divorce Alex.
She chuckled, then took out her phone and dialed Alex's number. The phone rang for a while before he answered.
"I'm busy," his voice was impatient and cold.
"Is the divorce agreement ready? I want to sign it now."
