No Wife, No Life Chapter 51
Frank thought this request was unreasonable. But he didn't have any better options. Holden was adamant that Harper take him back to house. If he didn't see Harper, he'd definitely start asking questions and might even show up right away.
"This is Mr. Holden Lavien's request," Frank said firmly.
Frank was a man of few words, but when he spoke, people listened. He didn't waste time on small talk.
Harper paused for a moment, then there was some rustling on the other end.
"Got it. I'll be there soon," she replied decisively.
Harper was always practical and saw the bigger picture. In this situation, she couldn't say no. Holden had always been good to her, and they hadn't told him about the divorce yet. She didn't want to worry him. Over the years, she had come to understand Holden's personality.
After hanging up, Frank let out a long sigh and glanced helplessly at the passed-out Alex.
Harper arrived quickly. She was dressed casually, her hair tied back in a ponytail, looking fresh and composed.
She walked in, glanced at the empty bottles scattered around, and frowned. "Why did he drink so much?"
Travis pointed at Alex. "Ask him. We couldn't stop him."
Tonight, Alex was in a particularly bad mood and had drunk a lot, which was unlike him. They had known him for years and rarely saw him drunk. Alex was usually very self-controlled and didn't easily lose his composure. He had said that once a person got drunk, they lost their reason and could be easily manipulated, so he avoided getting drunk.
But tonight, he had really overdone it.
Harper walked over, and Travis made room for her.
"Alex, are you still with us?" she gently pushed him and called out.
"Harper," he mumbled, still not opening his eyes.
Harper's heart stirred. Even in his drunken state, he called her name. But now, they were no longer together. What was the point?
"Alex?" she called again softly.
Finally, Alex opened his eyes slightly, still heavily intoxicated.
He was truly drunk.
"Harper, is that you?" he murmured, unusually gentle.
"Can you stand up?" Harper asked calmly, not looking at him.
Alex chuckled. "Of course I can."
He tried to stand but almost fell. Harper quickly caught him. Travis and Frank rushed over to help, and they managed to get him into the car.
They weren't reassured until they had driven back to The Lavien Mansion. When the door opened, Holden came out with his servants to greet them.
Holden looked at Alex, who reeked of alcohol, and frowned. "How did he get this drunk?"
Harper replied lightly, "He just closed a big deal today. I guess he was celebrating."
Holden sighed, instructing Ron to help Alex upstairs to rest.
After waiting for them for a long time, Holden finally couldn't stay awake any longer. He gave Harper a few instructions and went to bed.
Harper went upstairs to their room. Alex was already lying on the bed, seemingly asleep.
She told Ron he could leave and that she would handle things from here. Ron nodded and left, closing the door behind him.
Harper went to the bathroom, ran a bath, and then went to wake Alex.
"Go take a bath," she said.
Alex seemed a bit sober now. With Harper's help, he stumbled into the bathroom. Harper looked at the large bed, took a blanket from the closet, and curled up on the sofa without changing her clothes, covering herself with the blanket.
They were divorced now and would no longer share a bed. How would they explain this to Holden? He liked her so much and always hoped their marriage would be happy and lasting. But she had let him down.
In the future, Alex would bring Emily to this room. She thought about this as she heard footsteps approaching.
Harper closed her eyes tightly, pretending to be asleep.
Suddenly, she felt a warmth as someone pressed down on her. He smelled of alcohol, his eyes half-open and hazy, seeking her lips.
Harper was shocked and pushed him away forcefully. "Alex, are you crazy?"
He grunted, his tone disdainful. "We've had sex so many times. Why are you pretending?"
He was angry. She had once been so obedient and caring, but now she was with Caden. He wanted to belittle her, to hurt her, to make her feel ashamed.
"We're divorced," Harper said coldly, looking him in the eye. "You could do whatever you wanted before, but now we're divorced. We have no relationship. I'm not your tool anymore. If you need to vent, go find your lover or hit up a nightclub. There are plenty of women there."
Her demeanor was icy, as if she were encased in frost.
Alex seemed to become more sober. He stood there for a moment, then silently returned to the bed and lay down.
Harper didn't sleep well, only dozing off in the early morning hours.
When she woke up, Alex was already gone. The bed was empty, as if no one had slept there.
She checked the time. It was past eight. She quickly got ready and went downstairs.
As expected, Holden was already having breakfast.
"Good morning, Grandpa. Sorry I'm late," she apologized, sitting down next to him.
Holden looked at her fondly. "It's fine. I told them not to wake you. I wanted you to sleep in."
He then glared at Alex. "It's your fault for drinking so much."
Alex remained silent, sipping his milk slowly.
Holden spoke seriously. "These past few years, Harper has taken such good care of you. You should be nice to her. If you lose her, you'll never find a better wife."
He then turned to Harper, his eyes filled with joy. "Our family is so lucky to have you, Harper."
Harper smiled modestly. "Holden, I'm not that great."
Holden insisted, placing a fried egg on her plate. "You are. I know you are. I have a good eye for people."
Harper couldn't refuse. Just as she was about to eat the egg, she felt nauseous. She clutched her stomach and turned away, dry heaving but bringing nothing up.
When she sat back down, she noticed Holden and Alex looking at her knowingly. Her face instantly turned bright red.
