No Wife, No Life Chapter 231
Dominic's lips curled into a subtle smile as he remarked, "Harper, you're aware that Manuel is an unruly individual who has never publicly pledged his permanent allegiance to our nation. Therefore, when we assign personnel to follow him under the guise of protection, it would be more accurate to characterize it as surveillance."
"Now, you've got control over him, and you grew up here. I need you to make it clear that you'll always be loyal to our country and never do anything against our nationals."
"If you can do that, then a lot of things you want to do in the future will go smoothly."
Harper got the message.
In fact, as long as she made that statement, anything she developed in the future had to benefit the country.
Harper smiled.
"Of course, I'll love the country as it loves me. As long as the country doesn't betray me, I'll never betray it. Mr. Hall, is that good enough?"
With that one sentence, Harper also set her own fair terms.
Dominic gave Harper a deep look, understanding the deeper meaning behind her words.
"Very well, that's enough."
Harper extended her hand. "Thank you, Mr. Hall."
Dominic shook her hand and said, "Later, I'll contact my people to release Travis."
Harper expressed her gratitude once more and then left the hotel.
Stephen didn't leave immediately but stayed behind.
"This is the first time you've met her daughter. Do you think she resembles her?"
Dominic poured himself a cup of tea and took a slow sip. "They look alike, but in terms of personality, Harper might be more rational."
"Rational?" Stephen almost laughed. "She personally drove a car and broke Jeremy's leg."
"What's wrong with being rational within controllable limits?" Dominic asked calmly.
Memories resurfaced.
When he was young, he met Alvina. She was beautiful and powerful, making everything seem easy in her hands. No one could help but admire someone like her.
Back then, there was a traitor in the team, and Dominic was framed, having his fingers cut off one by one.
When he was rescued and brought back home, many doctors couldn't reattach his fingers.
He was so young, and losing his hands meant losing everything. He could no longer hold a gun or a knife, facing the prospect of retirement, and it felt like the world had plunged into darkness.
But just when he was in utter despair, Alvina appeared.
The surgery was performed by Declan, and the precision instruments were developed by Alvina.
She said it was no big deal and assured him he could return to the team.
He still remembered Alvina's radiant face over the years. So, all these years, he kept those scars as a reminder of his connection with Alvina, which was a lifetime's fortune for him.
He wouldn't steal someone else's lover, so he kept those feelings buried deep inside.
In fact, there were many rumors outside, saying that many high-ranking officials had Alvina in their hearts. That was true. Dominic knew of several.
Outstanding people always attracted admiration, didn't they?
Dominic's sojourn to this destination was not merely prompted by professional obligations; rather, his presence was predominantly motivated by an earnest desire to make the acquaintance of Alvina's daughter. Dominic kept his word. Soon, Harper received news that Travis had been released.
She personally drove to pick him up.
It was morning, and as Travis walked out of the police station, he squinted against the bright sunlight, shielding his eyes with his hand.
"How about a shower to wash off the bad vibes?" Harper shouted, casually opening the car door.
"I've set you up with a job at FusionX. There are still some folks there I haven't dealt with, so for now, you'll have to put up with being my secretary. Once those people are out of the way, I'll find you a better position."
She smiled, clearly pleased with herself. "Don't stay in that villa the Lavien Group gave you. I'll get you a better place. And the car is already sorted, all the latest models you like."
Travis stayed silent as he saw Harper. When she finally stopped talking, he spoke up. "Did you make some deal with Quinn to get me out?"
"Harper, do you really think I'm worth all this effort?"
Harper's smile faded, and she sighed softly. "Why would you say that?"
"I thought you'd never say something like that. To me, you're always so confident."
Harper looked up at him, her eyes bright like stars, even more radiant than when she was at the Lavien Group.
Suddenly, she reached out and pretended to grab something from the air, handing it to him. "Look, I'm giving you half of my confidence."
Travis, who had been feeling down, was momentarily speechless, as if something was stuck in his throat.
"Take it." Harper seriously held her fist out, as if her confidence was really in her palm.
"My confidence, something no one else can possess, is now yours."
Travis chuckled but still played along, taking her imaginary confidence. "Alright, I got it."
Harper crossed her arms. "Remember, you're Travis, the one and only Travis. Just keep that in mind."
Before Travis could respond, Harper pulled out a stack of documents from the car and handed them to him. "I know your abilities well. From now on, you'll be my chief secretary at FusionX. These are the current projects you need to follow up on. Tonight, I'll introduce you to some key people, and then you can decide whether to take a day off or dive straight into work."
She didn't give Travis any time to think. Only by quickly immersing oneself in work could one forget the unpleasant things.
Travis was taken aback. "Harper, you still haven't answered my question."
Travis wasn't a fool and wouldn't be easily deceived.
Harper smiled lightly. "I don't understand why you're so hung up on this."
"Do you think I've compromised a lot for you? So you don't want to owe me too much?"
Travis remained silent, but that was exactly what he meant.
"Alright, I did meet with Quinn. I originally wanted to buy the evidence to clear your name, but Quinn's asking price was too high, so I refused his offer."
Actually, Quinn's price wasn't too high, but Harper saw that he intended to use Travis to manipulate her. If she fell into his trap, she would be constantly blackmailed in the future, so she decisively rejected Quinn's offer.
"So you don't need to worry. I didn't give up much for you."
Still concerned that he might not fully understand, Harper continued to explain, "You know my latest research is enough to prove my capabilities, and that's why they agreed to my request."
"So, you can rest easy now."
