No Wife, No Life Chapter 73
Despite the bad weather, they arrived at The Lavien Mansion right on time.
When Alex and Harper walked in, Kaitlyn and the others were already there.
"Harper, you made it!"
Kaitlyn greeted her with a bright smile as soon as she saw her.
She was wearing a mauve-colored long dress, and her pink diamond earrings sparkled brilliantly.
"Harper, we've been waiting for you," Holden chimed in, smiling warmly.
Every time Holden saw Harper, his mood lifted.
Harper's gentle nature and graceful demeanor always pleased Holden.
He often said that the Lavien family was truly fortunate to have Harper as a daughter-in-law.
"Come on, everyone, take a seat," Jeremy invited, gesturing towards the table.
He was Alex's uncle and Kaitlyn's father, around fifty years old, with a refined appearance and a pair of gold-rimmed glasses perched on his nose.
The Lavien family members were all good-looking, and Jeremy was no exception.
In fact, Alex bore a striking resemblance to him.
Holden sat down first and then asked Harper to sit next to him, followed by Kaitlyn.
Jeremy and Alex sat on Holden's other side.
Tonight was a welcome dinner for Kaitlyn, so the table was laden with a variety of dishes.
Kaitlyn was Jeremy's only daughter, and he doted on her.
Now that she was back from abroad, Jeremy intended for her to join the Lavien Group.
"Kaitlyn's graduated, and I think she should join the company. She can help Alex out," Jeremy said in his deep, steady voice.
Kaitlyn wasn't getting any younger, and he certainly wanted her to join the company. If possible, why couldn't Kaitlyn inherit the Lavien Group?
"Dad, I don't want to join the company. I have other things to do. Besides, Alex is doing great, and he has Harper to help him. What could he possibly need me for?"
Kaitlyn pouted and raised her glass to toast with Harper.
"Harper, let's have a drink. This is a top-quality wine I brought back from abroad."
The exquisite crystal glass held a rich, red wine that emitted a strong aroma.
In the past, Harper could have had a few drinks.
When she first joined the company, she often drank with clients to secure projects.
The Lavien family knew she could handle her liquor.
But now, she was pregnant and couldn't drink anymore.
So, she shook her head slightly and smiled.
"Kaitlyn, I'm not feeling well lately, so I can't drink."
Kaitlyn's eyes sparkled with a mix of joy and mischief. "Harper, are you pregnant?"
Holden immediately looked at Harper, his eyes filled with eagerness and anticipation.
Alex and Harper had been married for five years, always saying they were too busy with work. Was there anything more important than having a child?
Harper blushed. "No, my stomach's just been upset. Frank advised me not to drink for a while."
Kaitlyn sighed in disappointment but glanced at Alex.
"Alex, what's going on? Shouldn't you see a doctor?"
Holden took Harper's hand and patted it gently.
"Harper, I'm hoping you two will have a child soon. When you do, make sure to raise them well. The Lavien family will be counting on them in the future."
Holden's implication was clear: only their child would be the rightful heir to the Lavien Group.
Jeremy's eyes darkened, and he silently poured himself a glass of wine, sipping it slowly.
Harper was at a loss for words.
"Alex, when are you gonna make me an aunt?"
Kaitlyn's tone was somewhat dissatisfied.
She genuinely hoped Alex and Harper would stay together for the long haul.
As for Emily, she had no chance of marrying into the Lavien family.
She knew they were already divorced, but so what? There was always the possibility of remarriage.
As long as she was in the Lavien family, she would never agree to Emily becoming her sister-in-law.
Alex felt a sudden chill in his heart.
He had considered the idea of having children before, but he always thought he wouldn't have kids with Harper.
Their marriage was a mistake from the start; he didn't love Harper, so they wouldn't have children.
But now, he found himself wondering if things would be different if they did have a child.
In the end, they had no future together.
A wave of indescribable bitterness surged in his heart.
He picked up his glass and downed it in one gulp.
"Alex, say something," Kaitlyn pouted, refusing to let it go.
"Kaitlyn, your earrings are beautiful. Are they the ones from the auction?"
Harper skillfully changed the subject.
Sure enough, Kaitlyn's interest was piqued.
She leaned closer to Harper, her eyes filled with delighted pride.
"Harper, you're right. These are the 'Starry Night Diamonds.' My dad got them for me at the auction. Aren't they gorgeous?"
The 'Starry Night Diamonds' were a highlight of that auction, fetching over a million dollars.
Jeremy truly adored Kaitlyn.
"Kaitlyn, have some of this. It's your favorite, braised beef," Jeremy placed some food on Kaitlyn's plate, his eyes full of affection.
Harper lowered her gaze and sipped her juice.
Kaitlyn was truly fortunate.
She had a father who doted on her, while Harper had never experienced such love.
Maybe her mother had loved her like that, but it was so long ago that her memories had faded.
"Alex, what are you doing? Serve Harper some food," Holden seemed to notice her sadness and shot Alex a look.
Alex responded quietly, then hesitated before placing a piece of maple-glazed ham on Harper's plate.
Holden was taken aback.
Harper glanced at the maple-glazed ham.
The dark brown sauce looked greasy.
Her face paled slightly, but she still picked it up and slowly put it in her mouth.
The sweet sauce made her feel nauseous.
"Excuse me!"
She covered her mouth and quickly headed to the bathroom.
"Alex, what's wrong with you? Harper doesn't eat ham," Kaitlyn couldn't help but scold him.
Holden also glared at him angrily.
"Don't you know Harper doesn't eat ham? Even Kaitlyn knows that, but you, as her husband, don't. Over the years, Harper has remembered all your preferences. She always makes what you like."
"Yeah, Alex, who else would treat you as well as Harper does?"
Kaitlyn blinked, looking at him meaningfully. "Alex, if you lose Harper, you'll never find another like her. You'll regret it."
Emily? How could that be?
Someone who should be living like a pest in the sewers could never compare to Harper.
Would he regret it?
The bitterness in Alex's heart grew stronger.
