No Wife, No Life Chapter 40
From the get-go, Alex was clear about one thing: no kids.
He made it known their marriage was just a temporary arrangement, so having children was a no-go to avoid any future mess.
He was cold and calculating, never wanting anyone to use a kid to manipulate him.
So, right from the start, he laid it out: "Harper, listen, we will not have children."
For five years, every time they got intimate, Alex was super careful about using protection.
But now, how could she be pregnant?
"Harper, didn't you know you were pregnant?"
Frank furrowed his brow, staring at her.
"Impossible, we always used protection."
Harper still couldn't wrap her head around it.
Frank, however, was serious: "The report shows you're four weeks pregnant."
Four weeks, that's over a month.
Her mind raced back. Could it be that time?
A month ago, Alex had gotten drunk.
He reeked of alcohol, his desire uncontrollable, and he had been rough and wild with her.
She remembered that time, he hadn't used protection.
If it was really that time, wasn't it too much of a coincidence? They had unprotected sex just once, and she got pregnant?
"Harper, what are you going to do?"
Frank asked calmly.
Instinctively, Harper shook her head repeatedly: "No, no, Alex doesn't want kids."
He doesn't want our child!
She thought in agony.
Frank sat down in front of her, speaking earnestly.
"Harper, I'm not asking about Alex, I'm asking about you. Have you thought about it, do you want this child?"
For a moment, Harper was stunned. Her mind was a mess, she couldn't think straight.
"As a doctor, I advise you to think carefully. Every child is a continuation of life, we can't decide their fate lightly."
He sighed softly, then continued: "Of course, I will respect your decision."
Harper pondered.
What she knew for sure was that she was pregnant, and she was certain Alex wouldn't want this child.
So what should she do now?
Their marriage was over, so should she keep their child?
Yes, she wanted to keep it. She desperately wanted to have a child with him.
Countless nights, she had imagined what their child would be like. Would the child look more like him or her?
She knew Alex was cold and unfeeling.
But she loved Alex.
For five years, she had tried hard, thinking time would slowly melt the ice in his heart and that he would eventually come to love her.
But her efforts had failed.
The appearance of Emily had shattered their five-year marriage.
She had thought, even if it wasn't Emily, it could have been any other woman.
Because Alex didn't love her, never loved her, and never would.
Admitting this fact made her feel like a failure, but it was the reality.
Well, even if she couldn't keep him, at least she could keep his child.
Suddenly, she looked up, her eyes filled with determination.
"Frank, Alex and I are getting a divorce."
Frank nodded without a change in expression.
"He doesn't want the child, but I do."
She said firmly.
She looked at Frank, sincere and earnest: "So will you help me keep this a secret?"
If he told Alex the truth, this child wouldn't stand a chance.
Frank blinked, his gaze deep.
"Harper, just because I'm Alex's friend doesn't mean I back all his choices," Frank said.
Frank had known Harper for over five years and knew her well.
He had once thought they would stay married, but reality proved otherwise.
He couldn't understand why would Alex give up Harper for Emily. How could Emily even compare to Harper?
In terms of looks, body, or capability, Emily was no match for Harper.
"Is there no chance of reconciliation?" Frank asked, genuinely not wanting to see them end like this.
Harper chuckled bitterly. "Frank, Alex was the one who asked for the divorce."
As Alex's friend, he should understand Alex's character.
Once Alex made a decision, no one could change it.
"He'll regret it!" Frank said with certainty.
He stood up. "Harper, whatever decision you make, I'll respect it. As for Alex, don't worry, I won't say a word to him without your permission."
Harper nodded.
Suddenly, she thought of something and asked, "What about the drug test results?"
Frank smiled, not answering directly, but asked meaningfully, "What do you think?"
She was smart enough to know the results.
"But even so, it doesn't prove anything," he said.
Harper felt despondent.
She knew that too, but she had to try.
"Alright, you can leave now."
Harper nodded lightly, then got out of bed and followed him out of the room.
Outside, there was no one, not even Caden.
Frank looked at her and explained, "Caden got a call and had to leave. He asked me to let you know. As for Alex..."
He sighed, a bit speechless.
"Alex didn't come at all, but he did call, asking you to go back to him at The Orsini Villa with the results."
Harper laughed bitterly.
Compared to her fainting, there was no doubt that his lover's birthday was more important.
"I got it, thank you."
Harper took the test report he handed her, then said goodbye and left.
She took a cab back to The Orsini Villa.
This time, she decided to take all her mother's belongings with her.
She was finally going to sever ties with The Orsini Villa.
Thinking this, she touched her belly, thinking of the little life inside, her heart filled with mixed emotions.
From now on, she would live for her child. She would protect the child, not let him suffer any grievances, and let him grow up healthy and happy, surrounded by love, unlike her own lonely and helpless childhood.
Lost in thought, she returned to The Orsini Villa.
The driveway was still crowded with cars. It seemed the guests hadn't left yet.
It made sense. Alex was still here, these people were eager to curry favor with him, they wouldn't leave easily.
She pushed open the villa door and walked in slowly.
The living room was still noisy, people chatting and laughing, their faces plastered with fake smiles.
"Harper's back."
Emily, sharp-eyed, immediately noticed Harper entering.
"Harper, are you feeling better?"
She smiled warmly, her tone concerned, as if they were always good siblings.
Harper sneered, "Emily, aren't you tired of acting every day?"
Emily looked innocent, "Harper, what are you talking about? I'm genuinely concerned about you. "
Harper suddenly threw the drug test report at her, her voice cold and sharp, "You drugged my drink!"
