Kaitlyn was totally speechless.

What could she even say?

"I don't care about them. To me, you're the only sister-in-law that matters."

Kaitlyn stood up, pouting as she spoke.

As the only daughter of the Lavien family and being spoiled by Jeremy, she had developed a willful and headstrong personality.

"Well, you should head back now. I still have work to do," Harper urged her.

Kaitlyn reluctantly nodded. Just as she was about to leave, she turned back and reminded Harper, "You have to come to the university anniversary tomorrow."

"Of course, I'll be there," Harper assured her.

After seeing Kaitlyn off, Harper focused on her work.

She didn't know how much time had passed when her phone buzzed.

Harper picked up her phone and saw a message from Caden.

She remembered that he had been away for two days. She wondered how he was doing abroad.

[Beautiful Ms. Orsini, have you been thinking of me on time? Because I've been thinking of you every day.]

How annoying!

Harper shook her head, muttering to herself.

She didn't reply to him and continued to look at the documents on her desk, occasionally typing some data into her computer.

Two minutes later, another message from him came through.

[I can't sleep because I miss you so much. How about you sing me a song to lull me to sleep?]

Harper chuckled.

Didn't Caden have anything better to do?

She put her phone down again, but another message came in.

[Alright, I'll try to sleep thinking of you. Remember to visit me in my dreams.]

Harper glanced at the message but didn't reply. She checked the time; it must be around three or four in the morning where he was. He really wasn't sleeping.

With that thought, Harper sighed quietly.

As it was nearing noon, she got up and locked the freshly organized files in the safe.

Just then, the office door was pushed open, and Emily walked in.

Harper looked at her, her gaze cold.

"Emily, will you ever learn what manners and etiquette are?"

Her tone was harsher, her face icy. "Get out."

"This is my office, not the CEO's office where you can come and go as you please."

It was no secret that Harper didn't like Emily. Anyone with eyes could see that. Emily should have the self-awareness to stay away from her, not buzz around like a fly. Harper really didn't want to see Emily at all.

But unfortunately, Emily never understood that. If she had, she would have restrained herself from the moment she entered the Lavien family, instead of acting so recklessly.

"I can go into the CEO's office, so why can't I come in here?" Emily retorted, her eyes full of defiance.

She had been humiliated by Kaitlyn in the CEO's office earlier, and now she wanted to blame Harper for it.

Emily had thought it through. The reason Kaitlyn disliked her was simply that she felt Emily wasn't as good as Harper. But Emily was determined to prove that she was more capable and better than Harper.

"Harper, I just called Luminary Innovations Inc. They really like my work, which is why they chose me as the intermediary. Once the deal is successful, I'll bring huge profits to the Lavien Group. Then, everyone will look up to me. Harper, I'll crush you under my feet and make you look up to me."

Harper almost laughed out loud.

If she could, she would love to open up Emily's head and see how her brain worked.

"You had Caden come and mess things up on purpose, ruining the deal with Luminary Innovations Inc., just so you could kick me out and take the credit for yourself. I won't let you get away with it," Emily declared, her voice full of conviction.

Harper smirked.

"Emily," she began, her tone dripping with sarcasm. "Do you know why Luminary Innovations Inc. didn't choose me?"

Emily's eyes narrowed, but she stayed silent.

"Because we crossed paths two years ago," Harper continued, leaning against her desk with her arms crossed. "Two years ago, at the Seraphim investment negotiation, I pressured Luminary Innovations Inc. so hard that they ended up transferring their overseas project to the Lavien Group at twenty percent below the initial price."

Her tone was cold, her gaze icy.

"So why do you think Luminary Innovations Inc. didn't choose me now?" She paused, her gaze becoming even sharper, like a sword piercing Emily's heart. "They didn't choose me because I'm too smart. They chose you because you're stupid."

She said it casually, the mocking smile almost spilling from her lips.

"Harper!" Emily's face turned red with anger. She clenched her fists, wanting to tear Harper's face apart. "I'll prove to you that Luminary Innovations Inc. made the right choice in picking me."

"I think they did make the right choice, because they chose the only fool in the Lavien Group," Harper retorted.

"I'll prove that the Lavien Group will make a huge profit from this contract. Just wait and see," Emily shot back.

Harper responded with a light, indifferent hum.

Seeing her nonchalant attitude, Emily grew even more furious.

Why did Harper get everything she wanted so easily? Everyone around them liked Harper, while they avoided Emily as if she were a dirty, smelly rat. She hated it, had hated it since she was a child, hated it to her core.

What made Kaitlyn and Harper so special? Why did they get to be on top while she was despised? So what if she was an illegitimate child? Did that mean she was condemned for life?

"Kaitlyn was your doing, wasn't she?" Emily spat, unable to hold back her anger.

"Harper, you're really something. Do you think that by having the Lavien family pressure him, Alex will choose you again?" Emily sneered. "Stop dreaming. Alex likes me, only me. No matter what tricks you use, he won't come back to you."

"I'll secure this contract and marry into the Lavien family openly. Then, you'll be kicked out of the Lavien family for good," she declared, her eyes sparkling as if she were already standing at the pinnacle of life, looking down at Harper beneath her feet.

Suddenly, Harper straightened up and walked towards Emily, closing in on her like she was about to devour her.

"Emily, let me tell you something. The reason I've gotten to where I am today is because of my own efforts. I didn't rely on anyone. Not Alex, not Kaitlyn. If you want to take everything from me, go ahead and try. I want to see how a rat plans to succeed."

Unable to hold back, Emily raised her hand. She wanted to slap Harper's delicate face or crush her completely, making her disappear from this world forever.

"Do you want the other side of your face to swell too?" Harper saw it coming and said coldly.

Emily's eyes reddened, and she covered her burning cheek, ultimately not daring to slap her. She glared at Harper with intense hatred before turning and leaving.
