No Wife, No Life Chapter 139

Caden was the life of the party, and since he was in a great mood, he didn't turn down any drinks, knocking them back one after another.

Harper, on the other hand, stayed out of the drinking games. She sipped on her juice and occasionally checked her phone.

After a while, Harper needed to use the restroom but found that Ronald was occupying the one inside.

She got up and told Caden she was going to use the restroom outside.

Despite having had quite a bit to drink, Caden was still sober and looked alert.

"I'll go with you," he said, putting down his glass and starting to get up.

"No need," Harper said, holding him back with a smile. "No need. I'm just going to the restroom. It's not a big deal."

She quickly left, worried he might follow her.

As soon as she stepped out, her phone on the table started ringing.

Caden glanced at the caller ID and saw it was Alex. His brows furrowed, and his lips pressed into a thin line, his eyes showing clear disdain.

The phone rang a few more times. Caden picked it up, swiped to answer, and put it to his ear without saying a word.

He wanted Alex to know that Harper was with him, so he should stop bothering them.

Harper had no idea about any of this. When she came out of the restroom, she bumped into a man.

"Sorry," she quickly apologized, but when she looked up, she saw a familiar face.

"Harper," the man called, holding her tightly, not letting go. His lips brushed against her hair as he murmured her name.

He had been drinking; Harper could smell the faint scent of alcohol.

Harper stiffened. She never expected to run into Alex here. But then again, this was the Sapphire Dining Room, so it wasn't entirely surprising.

"You're drunk. Let go of me," she said coldly. She regretted not letting Caden come with her.

"Harper, why are you treating me like this?" Alex's voice was low and hoarse. "Why are you so good to Caden?"

He was talking about the car. He cared a lot about that car. She wasn't supposed to love him the most? But why did she give the best to Caden?

They had been together for five years, and he never got such treatment. He felt wronged.

Harper pulled away from his embrace, stepping back to maintain a safe distance, as if he were a dangerous beast.

"Alex, you should know that feelings are mutual," she said coolly. "How did you treat me? Why do you have the nerve to accuse me of not treating you well?"

"Besides, he treats me as unique, so I naturally gave him something unique."

That car was indeed one of a kind, and that was what Alex cared about.

Alex fell silent. Her questions left him speechless.

Harper laughed coldly. "You know very well that you can't answer that because in the past five years, you never truly cared about me, let alone treated me as unique."

"Enough, there's no point in talking about this anymore," Harper said, looking down, losing the desire to continue the conversation.

"From beginning to end, I have never done anything to betray you. Therefore, Alex, I feel no guilt. The one who should feel guilty is you; it was you who abandoned our marriage, you who forsook our relationship. All of this is your fault. What right do you have to accuse me?"

"I did care. I drove that car for two years," Alex said, referring to the Maybach Harper had given him.

Harper's eyes flashed, and her lips curled in a mocking smile. "So, should I thank Mr. Lavien for not disdaining it?"

"No, I'm just not willing to accept it," he said, stepping forward and grabbing her arm tightly.

Harper winced in pain. "Let go of me!"

"Harper," Alex said, not letting go, staring into her eyes. "I can't accept this."

He wanted to say, "Harper, don't leave me," but the words turned into something else. He couldn't bring himself to beg.

But he was truly drunk. He wanted to hold her, feel her warmth and scent, just like before when she would take care of him whenever he was drunk. Now he missed that life.

Why couldn't they return to the way they once were? He felt lost, like a child searching for a lost toy, his heart filled with urgency.

"You're crazy," Harper said impatiently, with a hint of disgust. She tried to shake off Alex's hand.

Just then, a familiar and detested voice called out behind her.

"Harper, what are you doing? You've already divorced Alex. Stop bothering him," the voice was loud and sharp.

"You're still clinging to him. What about Mr. Elikin? Harper, are you that shameless?"

It was Emily. She knew Alex was meeting Frank and the others here tonight and had insisted on coming along, but Alex had refused.

Unwilling to give up, she had followed him and coincidentally ran into Harper.

How could it be a coincidence? She didn't believe it. She thought Harper had orchestrated this to seduce Alex and get back into the Lavien Group.

Her eyes were filled with malice as Emily rushed over and pushed Harper.

Harper stumbled but managed to stay on her feet. If she hadn't been wearing flat shoes, she might have fallen.

Instinctively, she placed a hand over her stomach, protecting the baby inside.

She stood her ground, her cold eyes fixed on Alex.

Even without makeup and in ordinary clothes, she was undeniably beautiful.

Harper snapped, "You say you're unwilling. Do you see? You don't even have the right to be unwilling."

Alex's face darkened.

Harper turned and walked away, not giving him another chance.

As she passed an open room, she saw Frank and Travis inside.

Travis was lounging in a corner, his face flushed from drinking. Frank, as always, was impeccably dressed, his hair perfectly in place.

When Frank saw Harper, he smiled and greeted her. "Good evening. Travis is hosting tonight. Want to join us?"

Hearing this, Quinn looked up at Harper and smiled. "We're discussing the financial summit tonight. Care to join?"

They were inviting Harper into their circle right in front of Emily, as if she had never left and was still one of them.
